It has pirates in spaceships flying around. No on-the-ground NPCs but I don't see why it would be a major hurdle for them.

I always wonder when I'm reading something like this what the thought process is behind the post. For my own perspective, I felt I've been consistent since 2010 with my perspective, uninformed as it is, of the kind of expenses a project like this would entail. Here's the post: http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=22187877#item_22187877 - and that here I've been even and consistent on my expectations, my thoughts behind those expectations, and the opinions I hold. Have I given you reason to suspect I would be untruthful in my feelings or my response here?

Does this really sound like what I've said/who I am in any post here or anywhere else, like on reddit or sn? You won't lose faith but you'll post that you did (cause the goonscorn, rite?)

That I would lie about my opinion just to seek approval from a group that utterly disagrees with me on nearly any point? The most likely response, if I was dishonest, would just be to silently leave in shame and never post again.

I like to think that I'm realistic in my view, if optimistic because of my years of testing various releases. I'm well aware most feel that I'm unreasonably optimistic, but if you're truly not trying to be mean, perhaps it would be best to not assume bad intention and try to predicatively assume I'm going to lie about my opinions.

Having said all that, I am thinking about the 2.0 release and what it means. My original post is kind-of vague because I tend to be uncertain on things. I've mentioned before that I like to observe or be presented with sourced facts so I can form my own opinion on things, and that includes my perspective on fun. Generally I like to give it a go myself, to explore the gameplay verbs (what actions the game engine allows). I've said before that space trucking E:D style is not my thing, and why that is, but not what is beyond a few mentions of enjoying the mission design for X-Wing/Tie Fighter and the multi-stage missions of FreeSpace 2.

I guess the most accurate measure would be something akin to I-War (in particular, I-War 2), where you play a corvette-sized ship. I-War 2 functioned as an open world, you could fly between systems via lagrange points, dynamically involve yourself in missions across a wide type piracy, escort, battles, and transport. So what I'd be looking for in 2.0 is the basic version of that kind of activity, but with the uniqueness of the capabilities of SC. Can I and a friend get together in a multi-crew ship? Can we travel around in space to multiple destinations and complete missions? Can we get into combat together, both controlling the systems of a single ship? And the required engine things: Is it stable for long play sessions? Can my friend join in my game?

If you really want to see my opinion, I guess I could stream it. I have a computer capable of doing that and then you can watch and hear directly how I feel. I can try that when the public release comes. If my friend is willing to join in I'll do that and then you can legitimately judge along side. He's a streamer himself, but tends to focus on playing retro games.

Thanks for the response... obviously I can't predict your actions, but with the overwhelming evidence, people fleeing the company, features promised that can absolutely never be delivered, dishonest sales tactics I really believe you won't ever lose faith and post some pat "I am not happy, I wish they would have fulfilled their promises" post... not a lie, I guess, but maybe just leaning towards something for our benefit... I mean you've put in HOURS trying to defend CIG (not white knighting, but explaining) so I feel nothing they can do will ever really cause you to bail out.

and that makes me sad, loiosh. it makes me sad

Nevermind, I think I found your post explaining your reasoning but I don't understand it. You don't think they did what they said they did because it's really complicated is about the best sense I can make of that.

I'll be interested to see if they did implement a real 64-bit world space coordinates system or not.

As I mentioned, I don't believe what they did is a proper/correct implementation. A hack (this proves it without a doubt) is fine. But even so, it's a stop-gap measure that I believe is going to not only cause some serious problems down the road, but which is also pretty much going to throw out all their "promises" made to backers for how the game world is going to run, be updated in real-time (persistent) etc.

The only conclusive proof will come when they release entire world as per the star map.

Thing is, nobody needs to listen to Ben. Those backers who have clout and who care, should be asking DIRECT questions to the brain trust and get some DIRECT answers. Anything short of that, is hogwash. And if they lie about it, well, if/when the game is finished and the entire world is active/live, we'll know for sure.

Note: They could have released the entire world map but only populate Stanton. They chose not to do that; under the excuse that the other social/planetside areas etc aren't completed. It's rubbish.

They've made it so there is no way to get a concrete answer, ever.

Croberts made that post stating that any answer through anyone other than him was just "their understanding at the time" or whatever it was and only he had the full picture. Access to Croblers is gated through the not-a-town-hall-as-promised avenue of 10FTC. He can pick and choose what to answer.

I'm sure that he has made another get out for himself at some point about how "things change during game development"

So to summarise:

  • Nothing anyone says, Developer or not is true. Only Chris Roberts can answer questions officially.
  • Backers cannot ask Chris Roberts questions directly, they are filtered and answered in 10FTC in a controlled environment.
  • Anything Chris Roberts says also can't be used to criticise the game because things change during game development.

I hope that clears up exactly how open this development is :v:

Before I realized that everyone on the CIG forums are insane I got into a debate with him. He wanted mining ships to have active cloaks so that no pirates could find you while mining and kill you. I pointed out, and cited, that CR said he wants no active cloaks in the game because that's not how he was balancing stealth mechanics. That guy's response was effectively "yea but there should be because I want it." He's batshit insane.

My favorite bit of the anniversary sale stream was when no one wanted to ask Chris any questions about Mark Hamill. Those ungrateful fuckers kept asking about some dumb game while Chris sat there looking pissed off until eventually someone asks him the most bland question ever. Something like "Was Mark Hamill fun to work with". Then we had a repeat performance only this time with mo-cap questions. IIRC that's when Chris referred to his project a movie.

That Jump Point article doesn't say anything different than how they've been describing the system the entire time--I don't know why you think it is proof of some sort of hack implementation.

Also, the star map does not represent a single, continuous space in the game as this and your previous comments imply. Each system represented on the star map is a single, large world Crusader-like map. You cannot fly directly from one system to another, normal travel is only possible within the bounds of each system. Transition between systems will be a transition between instances and accomplished only via jump points.

I mean, not to rush to the defense of CIG, but I can kind of understand them wanting to keep what is basically a "proof of concept" pretty small-scale.

Especially when you remember that each of these systems is supposed to have bespoke assets that are probably nowhere near completion.
