The Batman parody duck you were thinking of was Darkwing Duck. The Earth, Metal, & Fire ships are are likely named for the five Wu Xing which are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and finally Water. This is the Chinese equivalent of the four classical elements Fire, Air, Water, and Earth used by both Western society starting with the Greeks as well as Japanese philosophy. There is is also sometimes a fifth element called Aether by the former and Void by the latter.

Really, they should have just reined it in and kept to the rule of three, by which I mean Earth, Wind & Fire.

You were thinking of Darkwing Duck and he is, indeed, a badass anti-hero. Rather unlike Spadow the Edge...thing? e: Beaten. Oh well. I never really had that much trouble with it, given their color-coding. Red protects you from fire, blue lets you breath underwater, yellow attracts gems, green attracts life petals, white lets you walk on spikes like it weren't nuthin'. They have slightly more quirks than that, but those are the important ones. It's basically just a matter of remembering that the first three are roughly S3&K analogues, and that there's two new ones on top of those. Took me a while to learn what the white one even did, though; getting a shield and then throwing yourself at spikes is somewhat counter-intuitive. At least the green shield showed up early in the game and the item it attracts is commonplace enough that stumbling into its usage is easy. Incidentally, this game is the next IndieBox title, and there's still roughly eleven hours to sign up.

We've reached the halfway point. The levels get longer, the enemies get spammier, the bosses get spongier, and the plot gets... dark.

"Oh no, we can't break out of this prison!" "No worries, we'll break out of this prison, it's a piece of cake!" -they break out from the prison- Story aside, I feel the game would really benefit from the camera zooming out a bit on faster speeds. I don't know how it plays but just watching I keep expecting Lilac to plant her face into a dickishly-placed wall just a little further to the right.

Even some of the stupid grimdark poo poo could have been worked into something interesting; at least, the bits that aren't self-evidently just Strife patting himself on the back for his iconoclasmosity, this being a game with such childish, cartoony visuals and all. Why am I not surprised that hardcore fans appear to be complaining that extraneous dialog was cut from the game? At least some of them are acknowledging some editing is a good thing.

The story in this game is the one part that really stands out as being a completely amateur effort. The gameplay and music and visuals all live up to the best of the era they take inspiration from, but the story is just really clunky and poorly executed. I pretty much just stick to Classic Mode when I play this and it really doesn't feel like I'm missing out on much. The levels themselves do a better job at creating a narrative and atmosphere than the actual cutscenes. I'm definitely on board with them editing out the extraneous fluff.

Augus posted:The levels themselves do a better job at creating a narrative and atmosphere than the actual cutscenes. Eeeeh....I mean you're not wrong but that's not really a high bar to clear. Someone earlier in the thread was complaining that there's not really any cohesion to the levels if you play without story mode, they just kind of randomly happen in nonsensical order for no reason, and they weren't wrong either. Which is like...So did the original Sonic? But it was still fun. They don't need to create a super coherent narrative if it's fun. I think maybe Strife would have been better off not bothering with such an in-depth story at all. Just kinda tell us "Spacey McBadman wants the Politics Stone that powers everyone's hot water heaters, it's up to you to stop him so you can take a nice shower." For the level of interconnectedness the different levels have that's totally sufficient. Heck, that's more'n some games got back inna day.

...I'm not the best at skipping over unnecessary details myself, but that seems like a decent Cliff Notes version of everything up to the most recent video (and maybe a little bit of the next; I actually haven't watched to see where the cutoff point was).

This game is pretty sweet. They weren't kidding when they said 50 deaths is the average for a play through, I only had a mere 47 at the end of Lilac's. I don't mind having a story in the game but they really could have done a better job. It's kind of funny though because it's pretty obvious which characters were originally Sonic characters before getting a facelift.

If you can stand to sit through the story one of the charges the girls are accused of is being members of "the Red Scarves;" that's these guys (I think Carol might explicitly tell Milla that, and maybe even explains why she thinks bothering them now is at all constructive, but I sat through the story mode once, that'll do just fine, thanks). Since being one counts as a crime in Shuigang or whichever, and Lilac is very quick to protest that they're ex-Red Scarves, thank you very much, with a side order of "we were orphans and the alternative was starving to death," I assume they're generally unsavory, but to my recollection the game never explains anything about their political affiliation, philosophies, or even what they do besides ride around on noisy vehicles and wear colors that'd stand out in a Danish tulip farm. On the other hand, there do seem to be quite a lot of them, so according to the law of inverse ninjutsu there's not a whole lot of point in trying to be particularly sneakish... Lilac clearly felt the motorcycle was holding her back, but Carol kept not only the bike, but the neckerchief as well. If Strife were a better writer this would have been a good opportunity to explore Carol in a little more depth; obviously she feels a much stronger connection to her past as a vaguely-criminal, unstealthy ninja. As it is...I suppose it's just a mercy the motorcycle doesn't shoot missiles too. Dr. Buttass fucked around with this message at 01:22 on Dec 21, 2015 |

About all I remember is that they're thieves and assassins. The former you get to see with Spade stealing the Kingdom Stone; the latter is more of an informed ability. I know there was a line about Carol missing her sister that was cut from the cooties scene. Maybe her sister was a Red Scarf too and didn't defect? (I sincerely doubt it, but it's not like Carol's sister ever shows up in the plot to confirm or disconfirm this - that's why the line was cut, in fact.)

Possibly Red Scarves being a proxy for Yellow Turbans for the Space Chinese. Also note the conspicuous lack of reference to the Tienanmen Cube.
