LOVES THE KOG

I don't think this is necessarily a top ten album of the year but I always hold a special place for albums that come out really early in the year and get forgotten, and I thought that The Sidekicks album Runners in the Nerved World was really quite good

I generally try to make two playlists a year - one "best of" that's 20-30 tracks, and another "runners up" that I don't place a limit on.

Anyways, here's a 2015 ten-track playlist that draws from both. I purposely took out the stuff that people in this thread are guaranteed to already have heard - A real "best of" list would have something from the Tame Impala album, a Sufjan track, a Kendrick track, more pop, Hotline Bling, etc, but you've probably already heard those a thousand times. And if you haven't, whaa?? Stop and listen to those first!!

https://open.spotify.com/user/djvecchitto/playlist/3PlsHg9cpIZjBBVNGfMTpu

Notes:
• It's really hard picking one track from Junun - if you like that track, check out the whole album - except for a slump in the middle it's pretty excellent. If you don't start tapping your foot or nodding your head at 2:02, you might not be human
• Ought's Sun Coming Down is a truly excellent album that I feel everyone overlooked
• Frog Eyes's "Joe With The Jam" is the definition of a grower... I actively disliked it the first time I heard it, but now it's one of my favorite tracks of the year.

The Ought album is really cool yeah, but that took me like four or five listens to find a groove in my brain for it. It's, like, just out there enough to not be immediately accessible.

Spoon and Billy Idol were the best shows I saw this year. Unfortunately Ludacris was the worst by far.

Joywave was a really fun show despite disliking their album.

But Waxahatchee was loving great live, holy poo poo. Her sister is pretty nice, too, and the opener I saw them with (Try the Pie) was a lot of fun.

I was supposed to catch Waxahatchee here in London but she cancelled her Europe tour. :( Got to see CHVRCHES though so all was good in the end. Death Cab for Cutie was also a great show that I went to this year.

I thought Death Cab for Cutie were great when I saw them. The only new stuff they played off Kitsuigi was the few good tracks on the album. Walla leaving is obviously sad but live they have replaced him well enough.

Depreston by Courtney Barnett is incredible. Thanks to you guys for introducing me to it.

Hands down Sufjan put on my favorite show of the year.

Speaking of Sufjan, he released a christmas song which is pretty interesting. I have to give him credit for mixing Joy Division into a holiday song (skip to 7:30 to check it out, yes it's a long song but worth the ride).

1 out of roughly 100, of course. Including the strangest version of "Good King Wenceslas" which transitions into Prince's "Alphabet Street". (Can't find a combined version on YouTube, possibly due to, yknow, Prince)

Throughout his whole Christmas collection there's probably at least 1 solid full-length album of original Christmas songs, in addition to the very good covers.

Oh yeah, his Christmas songs are pretty terrible on average but I thought the 'Christmas unicorn' was a new one and I was surprised that it didn't completely suck.

Actually I was just describing the proportion of full-blown original Christmas songs he's done compared to the various covers and oddities. I actually quite enjoy most of it, even if portions are appreciated as experiments and nothing more.

Is it overall less overtly "anti-establishment/capitalism" than Beautiful Blue Sky? I thought the theme of that song was heavy handed and the pacing was super awkward so I never bothered checking out the rest of the album.

In another episode of "This isn't top ten from 2015 but something that will fall through the cracks," I really loved the Skylar Spence album Prom King. The first single came out last year and is also probably the best track but I just really dig this kind of nu disco stuff that doesn't get made anymore.

Fiona Coyne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw_7UrqzNUg

It's actually kind of an album about pop music and narcissism. It gets a little annoyingly meta sometimes but some of the tracks are really relaxing. Would have been a good summer album

Beautiful Blue Sky definitely has the most overt lyrics – although I bet the feeling heavy handedness comes at least partially from his vocal delivery, as every single word is enunciated so clearly that each word slams into your ear.

This track rules too:

billboard also reiterated the reunion rumors they floated earlier this year: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/dance/6821590/lcd-soundsystem-reunion-new-song-christmas-will-break-your-heart

still will believe it when I see it. I'm a little wary just because I've never seen them before and wouldn't want to miss the chance to catch them, if this is just a one-off tour - they're one of my three favorite artists of all time - but I hope they play more than festivals :(

Anaranjado posted:

I bought it because I'm a loving idiot and I want to have as close to a full discography as possible (I meant to fill out my collection while DFA was running that 35% off sale and forgot, arghhhhhhh records cost so much) but DFA reprints everything so I'm sure you'll be able to get it again next year :)
