Proposed Budget: Around $20K or less?

I'm kicking around the idea of getting a different car. I have a 2005 Prius with 112K miles or so. I don't have any pressing reasons to ditch it, mostly just because the odometer ain't getting any lower, I'd like something more modern and fun and I am far enough into my career to where I can afford something a bit better. I still have a little left on the loan but I'm definitely at least few G's above water on it if I sold it or traded it in.

You still owe a couple grand on a 10 year old car worth $5k where you have "no pressing reason to ditch it"? I would suggest getting rid of the loan and learning the joy of being car payment free. Unless it's 0% then ride that into the sunset and ignore what I'm saying.

I sort of assumed because basically every car you're considering is better with a manual. The Focus has wonky autos, the Fit loses some effective power and fun, and the mazda 3, well actually will be fine but apparently you have bad taste.

Basically you want something more fun. Serious answer is keep the prius and buy a miata for <$5k. The prius will be reliable and boring forever while barely drinking gas and hauling everything. The miata will be reliable, fun, and completely impractical.

The lexus hybrid CT thing is apparently not terrible to drive. Wonder if you can get a used one for under $20k these days (probably).

I prefer the styling and it sounds like it's more comfortable and practical if only by a small margin. I think I'll test drive them both at least, maybe the 3 will impress me in person.

I'd feel pretty douchey buying a GTI since I'm obviously not a big car enthusiast.

The GTI only outsold the Golf the last few months, and I'm guessing that's mainly because of the whole diesel fiasco. I don't know why they don't separate the TDI from the regular Golf in their sales figures either, as I'm sure that's the best selling model. Look at the sales difference between Nov 14 and Nov 15.

In any case, I have drove both the Golf TDI and a 2016 Mazda3 touring hatch and that Mazda is a better car.

Get an old 4020 deere with an end loader. I think you'll find tractors are a lot more expensive than you think. Also don't get frightened of the gear pattern on the 4020, it's complicated but not that bad.

Tractors are kind of like legos. You can buy attachments that can do anything for pretty much any tractor.

How big are the trees, how big are the rocks, and how mechanically inclined are you? It's kind of hard to gauge how big a tractor you need. If they're not all that big you can probably get by with a small tractor in the 20-30hp range. The good options there are:

NH Boomer series
AGCO ST30/34/etc
Kubota B series

some deeres, i have no idea, JD is stupid

Bad news: you will not find anything in your price range with the attachments you want that doesn't require significant work. If this is a one-time use or a limited duration project, I would highly recommend renting a small tractor, miniexcavator or skidsteer. For instance, a used 2002 AGCO ST34 with a couple hundred hours, which is a small/midsize 34hp tractor with a PTO, sans attachments, is about 5 grand in tolerable condition. Tractors don't lose value. A Deere dealer near me was selling a '74 ford 50 hp tractor for three grand, no attachments and it could use some work.

I'm thinking his best chance to get one is at a farm auction but you need to be in the right part of the country to have those on a frequent basis.

And yea 2k isn't going to cut it. And don't go too cheap-my neighbor bought a real nice deere from a guy for about 10k under what it should have gone, and a month later the feds showed up and took it since it turned out to be stolen (thankfully the guy hadn't spent the money and my neighbor was made whole)

I also think a roll bar is a pretty bad idea. Go open cab and know how to jump if you have to but you shouldn't be putting yourself in any roll situation if you're new at these. Hell, the PTO may well kill you if you're not used to being around them.

Yeah the most dangerous part of a tractor is the PTO by like five orders of magnitude. Agree on open cab.

Farm auctions are very tough if you don't know gently caress, though. He'd need to bring a buddy.

You could probablydefinitely pay a dude with a tractor to do the job for the amount you would spend on a tractor.

There's more to it e.g. the Golf got a new vastly improved 1.8T engine at some point, but GTI still outsold the Golf YTD 2014, before the diesel thing.

If there is one reason to go with the Golf it's that the 1.8T engine is going to feel substantially faster (and it actually is faster) than the 2.0l Mazda, probably about the same as the 2.5l Mazda which is significantly more expensive than what the base Golf starts at. Turbo torque plus VW is probably underrating the 1.8T engine a bit to keep some distance from the GTI.

I'm looking to unload my car and get something else, potentially 2 cars since I'm open to a fun car and beater combo. You can suggest an all in one wonder car that will suit both purposes, or two cars, one winter beater and one fun car. Budget below is total budget, not per car if you suggest 2.

Proposed Budget: 10-12k
New or Used: Used
Body Style: 2/4/5 door, don't really care. No trucks as I already have one. A small SUV (think CR-V, etc) is possibly acceptable.
How will you be using the car?: Daily driver/fun street car.
What aspects are most important to you? I prefer something RWD or AWD with a manual in a fun car but an auto FWD or AWD winter beater wouldn't bother me though. I live in the Detroit metro area so the roads are utter poo poo. A lowered convertible (I'll pistol whip the first person that suggests a miata - I've owned a few of them already, and I don't want another) with a crashy suspension isn't on my radar. I'd like decent fuel economy (upper 20s?) as I have a mostly highway commute. Subarus are ok, but I'm not too impressed with their MPG (wife has an 07 Outback 2.5 SOHC).

Hopefully that makes sense. For example, I was eyeing a CR-V and E36 M3 yesterday, but that was just looking at random stuff on craigslist.

Also how does Mazda's infotainment system fare? One thing that I really like about the Golf that I probably shouldn't care so much about is that it has Android Auto which basically lets you use your phone on the car's touchscreen, making it 1000% less useless than a normal infotainment screen. OK I have a more general car-buying thread . . . so I'm noticing that a lot of places have big sales events stuff posted on their websites this time of year. Some of the offers seem pretty nice, like 0% APR for 60 months, $1500 cash back, etc. Should I wait until sale events like these to buy a car or is it easy enough to get this kind of stuff while haggling? I ask because I have literally never bought a new car and have paid no attention at all this whole time.

KYOON GRIFFEY JR

A lot of that stuff is manufacturer supported incentives. They are periodic but very regular. I would say that most major manufacturers offer zero percent or significant cash back at least 3-6 months of the year, depending on brand. Mitsubishi offers cash back like, all the fuckin time.

Since you have a car in good shape, it can be beneficial to wait til a model year change, which is typically August or September. Traditionally, in July, the plants all shut down for a week or two and changes are made to cars - these improve reliability, change appearance, options packages, etc. Everything produced after that point is the next model year. Once newer model year cars show up on lots, dealers will begin discounting the old model year significantly, sometimes with manufacturer support. This happens in part because dealers finance their "floor plan" - the inventory of cars that they carry on the lot that they have purchased from the manufacturer. They would like to carry newer model year cars to drive traffic, but can't free up capital to invest in the floor plan until they sell current cars in inventory. Therefore, you can frequently get a deal because the dealer wants to get rid of inventory and the manufacturer wants the dealer to buy the new model year cars coming out of the plant.

Of course, any aging inventory is typically ripe for a good deal. You can look up average days' supply figures on most cars. I would imagine that right now a VW dealer would be keen to make a deal on a gas-powered Golf.

Try test driving both cars to compare how they drive and how their touchscreens are.

I like the Mazda3 system a lot, mostly because it has knobs in the center divider where your right hand rests that let you navigate the menus without having to use the touchscreen (someone here said that they ripped that design off of BMW???) It probably doesn't do as much as Android Auto, though.

Regarding navigation, you can either use your phone and connect the phone's audio output to your car speakers via cables or bluetooth, or you can buy navigation separately from the dealer. You aren't obligated to buy a certain trim level of MAZDA3 to get the navigation add-on, though.

Yes. You can even buy it for the lowest trim level new MAZDA3 now since they all come with the same infotainment system.

I agree that it is not clear on the website--I had to go in for a test drive and talk to the dealer to learn that.

Edit: I just read your first post in the thread. I wouldn't discount the Honda Fit. It kind of looks like a small mini-van, and the interior of the LX model wasn't as nice as the MAZDA3, but if that doesn't bother you much, it is an incredibly practical car. It is more spacious than the MAZDA3 despite being a much smaller car. If you want navigation, you'll have to get the highest trim model though.

In general, if a car is configured with the nav option on the window sticker, can the dealers take it off or is it something they already paid the OEM for and they would just lose money on?

IOwnCalculus
Apr 2, 2003

In most cases, it's a factory-installed option and isn't something that can easily be upgraded / downgraded. The Mazda3 might be a special snowflake if they're just making nav an expensive dealer-installed software upgrade across any trim, but I doubt they have a downgrade procedure.

Most likely, anything on the car that isn't very easily added as an accessory (custom wheels, "paint protection", window etching, undercoating) was put on there by the factory and was, in essence, paid for by the dealer when they bought the car from the manufacturer. However, it was paid for at a much lower rate than they're trying to charge you for it.

This is also why the current dealer setup sucks. Manufacturers end up really building to what dealers want to buy / stock / sell. It's why manuals are so hard to find even in cars that do offer the option. Dealerships don't want to have a stick taking up room on their lot, so they only stock automatics.

This infographic shows what the warranty does and doesn't cover: https://www.carvana.com/Content/images/CarvanaVehicleProtection.png?v=425368 Worth it? Co-pay is only $50 and you can take it to the dealership or any ASE-certified mechanic. I'm still covered by Kia's warranty for 10k miles, which is probably an entire year of driving for me. Worried about big breaks after that expires though.

What aspects are most important to you? Reliable, ease of maintenance

There is some magical weight for trucks in the tax code they need to be over so get qualified as different type of asset than a standard car. Talk to your CPA first, the tax code is really strange when it comes to cars, trucks and the random things that get tagged as luxury vehicles.

Honestly, comfort. I'm big & tall (6'5" & 350), and most of my family is the same. I'd like to be able to take all of us around when they visit, but if I'm traveling I'm going solo. I will say sitting in the old car for a few hours made my knee ache from being a bit squished. Also, AC is HUGE deal, specially when summer hits.

Sadly the '07 Jetta is being quote by the dealership at 10k repairs, mostly in the transmission/CV Join area. Thankfully I ride the bus to work, so I don't need to sit around for a commute, and can Uber to most the close-by places. So basically I'm gonna see how close to "Dead in the Road" it is when they call back, and shop around a bit. Body Style: hatch. I actually hate the way they look, but I need to haul bikes around on the regular and don't want an SUV
How will you be using the car?: 15 mile commutes, hour long drives into the mountains, occasional 600 mile / 1200 mile rt road trips.
What aspects are most important to you? Ability to fit 2 bikes into it. FWD or AWD. Standard transmission. Decent performance (say, 180-220 hp, enough to give it a bit of zip). Communicative steering. Firm but not overly stiff suspension.

I'm open to new or used, as long as it is considered a fairly safe buy used. I'd be skeptical of something like a used Speed3 just because I have images of 24 year olds running the engine to redline all the time. For new I'm seriously considering a Kia Forte5 SX, as it seems to fit all of my criteria at a very reasonable price. Any other new cars I should consider, or used cars to keep an eye out for?

I'm in the Denver area if it matters.

Thanks!

Why a used speed3, when you can just get a new 3? Doesn't seem like you need the extra power. It isn't like a kia forte ia fast.

How the gently caress does a 2007 jetta get 10,000 in repairs? I know, lol vw, but I'd get a second opinion or start learninf how to take care of your cars.
I teplaced my engine twice and combined that didn't cost 10k.

The lexus is fine, but toyota doesn't seem great at ergonomics for big dudes.
