Actually just remembered, been meaning to ask for some suggestions.

I really enjoyed Lord Finesse's 'SP1200 project' that was linked in here, really nice instrumentals and not all mellow. Anyone have any suggestions for compilations like that? Something in the vein of Dilla's Donuts or the Pete Rock instrumental collections.

Not necessarily looking for anything particularly mellow, not a fan of Fat Jon.

Madlib's Beat Konducta 1-2 (movie scenes), 3-4 (in India), Shades of Blue
Paul Nice Do You Pick Your Feet in Poughkipsie (sp), Soul on the Grill
RJD2 Deadringer, The Horror, Your Face or Your Kneecaps
Clutchy Hopkins Music is My Life, Walking Backward
Ammon Contact One in a Infinity of Ways, Sounds Like Everything
Company Flow Little Johnny From The Hospital/El-P Collecting the Kid

That should be decent for a start

And Oblivion Access is amazing. I'll probably write more about it later but it's something else. Way different from Mista Thug Isolation.

I was gonna recommend him but wasn't sure the vibe was the same as what you were asking for since I think he goes as his production from a totally different place from Dilla/Madlib etc. . If you dig his stuff there's a few dudes I really recommend who work in that lane (Prefuse 73 and Wax Tailor for sure at the bare minimum)

Also I'm an idiot for forgetting but definitely check out the Special Herbs series by MF Doom. Although his stuff is typically a lot simpler than the other dudes (some of his productions are pretty much just a sample played over some basic drum loop) but they're still really good imo.

Also Oblivion Access.

So it's probably at it's base level the most bleak rap album (and maybe just most bleak album period) that I've heard, both in how it sounds and the actual lyrical content. What seems to set it apart to me from other things I can think of is the entire tone of literally nothing mattering or being worth anything (which is explicitly stated on a few occasions). It's not like he's even exempting himself from that idea-he's got verses being delivered by text to speech programs. That's what seems to separate it from most of the stuff in a similar vein I've heard-to me rap's always kinda a vital, positive thing like the very act of rapping is kinda an assertion of...something. But LUM's pretty much shed all of that here. Someone mentioned Cage as being similarly depressing which isn't entirely off-base, but whereas he sounded bitter LUM's just pretty much delivering "facts" as it were.

Also, it's not quite as much of a shift from Mista Thug Isolation as initially I thought. It's still a horror movie, just a different type of one (imo, a much more chilling one).

I could go on but yeah, it's an amazing album. I'd definitely consider it an acquired taste though-there's lots of noise type stuff going on which def can be offputting if that's not your thing, on top of the unrelenting bleakness. Otoh the album's wonderfully produced and even though everything's fairly dark in content, it's not always that way musically. It's a beast of an album.

oblivion access is way too negative and depressing. lum always had those themes of bleakness and melancholy but he used to inject some humor into it which made it more fun to listen to. The record is still very good i just wish it didnt take itself so seriously!

Yeah I should probably elaborate, I'm looking for more gritty, dark production specifically; I was surprised by the 'SP1200 project' Tomato linked because a lot of the beats are quite bleak, but I guess Finesse and DITC generally always have had an ear for those beats.

I love the MF Doom and Prefuse 73 instrumentals, pretty sure I have most if not all of those, but looking to branch out for more experimental or gloomy stuff.

That's a fair description, and I'm still working through it but I'm a bit behind with new stuff in hip hop recently - still haven't listened to Pusha T's new album yet. That said I really liked 'Third Side of Tape', it's inaccessible but I listen to it a lot more than I thought I would.

I've never really listened to Cage or Wax Tailor, will check those both out next - ta.

That's totally fair. Like even on uneven compromise you had a bit of tongue-in-cheek to the first part (the second snippet is pretty grim though). There's pretty much no letup on Oblivion Access and if you don't dig (or aren't in the mood for) really heavy poo poo it's likely not gonna be something you'll wanna listen to.

Nah I got what you were going for, that's why I didn't throw in Blockhead. His stuff can get a little moody but yeah. And I threw some El-P recommendations in but really any of his instrumentals would likely fit the bill if you hadn't heard them previously. Also I just though you may wanna try to dig up some of Alias or Sixtoo's more instrumental heavy stuff off anticon. I'll check for some when I get home but they'd probably also fit the bill. Blue Sky Black Death's another one.

Also not really hip-hop at all, but if you're looking for stuff that's kinda dark and gritty you may wanna check Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique by mu-ziq. There's also a lot of stuff in that vein but it's far afield, it's just that album always sticks out to me for various reasons.

I'd check LUM's first two parts of the * Side of Tape series if you liked Third. They're similar for sure.

Totally ignore Cage's second defjux album. I think I've never been more disappointed by a rap record. Just awful (and it actually helped take the label down too from poo poo I've heard). Movies for the Blind, Hell's Winter, and Kill the Architect are all different and very good though.

As for adding anything to the OP, not sure how many dudes even read it. I was thinking of starting another thread sometime early in january. Figure I could add some things then. Also would be good I think to have all the AOTY discussion early in the thread so folks can easily catch up on stuff they maybe missed last year.

So with that, any suggestions to what people would like to see added? I'd really like to add more RnB stuff since it seems to be having a minor resurgence. I'll probably just copy/paste what I got now and add some new suggestions where appropriate (although most of it's largely on point still)

edit-whoa didn't notice this thread isn't even a year. i swear the old thread took like 4 years to get 10k posts or something. i'll tidy up the op, but i'd still like to know if there's anything folks want added or w/e.

I'm almost ashamed to say this but I really liked the new Chris Brown album. The production is really good and his voice sounds great.

One really creepy thing is the front cover is him holding his sleeping daughter and the FIRST song on the album is about loving someone to sleep. Really bad sequencing, god drat.

I read he really went through that he had a girlfriend die of meningitis and he took care of her. Dudes had a tough life from what I've read.

I'm just now listening to Oblivion Access. It's very weird but I'm liking it. Is Mista Thug Isolation the only album he uses the pitched vocals and plays a character?

e; I'm at the part with the text-to-speech thing and this is amazingly well done. He's pretty sharp lyrically.

I didn't know that. Makes the song even heavier. Isn't it also about his relationship with music or am I making that up?

In any case, I recognize he's an incredibly talented dude and I'll listen to him every once in a while, but I generally don't look for the kind of stuff that he puts out.

so while I liked Big Boi's solo records, I kind of hate Phantogram, and didn't bother listening to Big Grams. got a ticket to their show tonight on a whim and the promise of seeing a verse from Ms Jackson, and was actually kind of blown away. turns out that album is pretty good if you like that kind of synthpop sound Big Boi has done on his last few records, and the girl in Phantogram actually sounds really loving good live! also they not only did Ms Jackson mashed with some Phantogram song but also The Way You Move mashed with some Phantogram song so I got my money's worth
