It's pretty much the same as FC in most regards. There are a few hidden sidequests you'll probably miss without a guide, there's a series of books to collect from npcs to trade for an ultimate weapon, etc.

Two things I can think that are worth mentioning are that shining poms now have a certain chance of spawning as part of set encounters, so it's really easy to farm them just by getting into a fight with the enemy they have chance of spawning with, then running and getting back into the fight until they shown up.

Also when you can choose to have agate or schera join you agate is basically easy mode.

Oh yeah don't play on hard or above. They're designed for NG+ and SC is already quite a bit more challenging then FC

I'm assuming Time Magic and/or Earth Wall are not quite as broken as they were in FC? I seem to remember that getting mentioned at some point in the Falcom thread.

Yeah magic got nerfed. It has higher costs from lower EP pools, and requires more quartz for the same magic. By like chapter 7 this stuff is mostly mitigated but magic is still never quite as dominant

Not to sound too flippant, but the one thing you should know about not being a magic user is: reconsider being a magic user. Not only is the most overpowered class from wire to wire, it's also BW's pet class and they get all sorts of special plot treatments. If you aren't a Mage yourself, then it'll usually fall to a party member to handle these plot beats, and that's somewhat less fun. Also, Arcane Warriors get the benefits of sword and board and armor while also being neigh unkillable.

That said, Rogue/Assassin and Rogue/Duelist were pretty fun. Two-weapon Rogues are sort of like Two-handed Warriors in that you get to tear down enemies constantly, as opposed to Sword+Shield Warriors designed to tank, or the (mostly kinda useless) Bow Rogues.

The greatest of feasts

Seconding Arcane Warrior. If you want to be Sauron at the start of Lord of the Rings, you'll want to be an Arcane Warrior. Give yourself a bit of healing magic and you're drat near unstoppable. Make sure you look up a guide to find out how to unlock the specialisation, though, because you'll want to beeline for it ASAP.

It's the ur-Telltale game. You walk around, talk to people to advance the story, and occasionally do a QTE. Follow your diary and when you have time to kill you can play with a cat, practice your moves at a parking lot, collect gashapon, or play some arcade games. There is a time limit to complete the game but you have to actively try to fail.

I will say if you're unfamiliar with Virtua Fighter you should practice the combat. There are a couple huge battles in the end and the final boss is a dick.

The antique store sells you new moves.

Don't feel down about screwing up quick-time events, you won't missing anything important.

Practice your moves in the carpark by the arcade. It makes them a little stronger, and there is one or two fights you'll need to know what you're doing in the endgame.

Tom is the best character in the game :allears:.

The "work at the harbor" section is a huge waste of time even if you do as quickly as possible by using a guide, and utter torture if you're just bumbling around, trying to get the plot to trigger.

Use a guide.

1) Grow a Neckbeard

2) Pick either full Psi or not, going Psi will cut your total HP by 25%. Psi users are like DND wizards, basically.

3) Generally, you want a weapon skill on character creation.

4) Lockpicking/hacking isn't necessary since you can craft better stuff than the stuff you'll find using both of them.

al-azad

Is full psi viable in Underrail? I find it frustrating in RPGs when late game enemies have some kind of magic resistance that makes them invulnerable. Good point of reference for what I expect is Shadowrun where magic users don't drop off at any point.

Also is magic viable in Gothic 3? It's utter poo poo in Gothic 2 with the expansion putting huge emphasis on strength but I noticed Gothic 3 has the ability to regenerate mana. I'm definitely not installing the expansion this time.

You get powers by talking to the doctor in the medical area and letting him unlock them for you. This is free but permanently gives you -25% HP so don't make the decision lightly. He'll also direct you to the people in town who can teach you new abilities in whatever circle of psi magic you're interested in. You'll probably want a ranged weapon too though (not melee, considering the hp penalty)

While we're asking about things that are viable in Underrail:

Is Unarmed combat viable? The number of feats it get to help it out seems like they at least tried to make it so. Would it need to be supplemented by other melee weaponry/guns?

I've got a guy rolled up that I was planning on trying as pure unarmed, but I haven't had time to do more than the tutorial, where I couldn't get a melee attack to come out against the sentry bot at all, with a weapon or unarmed either one.

Basic Missions are chaff and can be taken any number of times / are random which you'll get. Just get them if they have interesting equipment or you need money.

Normal Missions are normal missions.

Affinity Missions give you big rewards or party members. They can't be taken during Story Missions, which means your first chance to do them is Chapter 4 (whose story mission is the first that doesn't auto-start).

Switching characters sucks because you have to go find them.

It's possible to save everyone.

Dont be afraid of strangers

Take the time to search for Tiki's and clues on side-paths if you see them.

Be kind to animals.

Give Matt the flaregun, dont use it or keep it yourself.

- Read the manual. Seriously it has a lot of info the game never explains.

- For Basic missions never pick up a gathering missions because you can obtain the items before even taking up the mission. Every once in a while just check the gathering missions listed and accept anything that you already have the materials for.

- For any Normal mission that requires you to collect something just look up the area to get it because you're never given a hint on where to find certain collectables.

- Once you master the last class in a line you have access to that classes weapons for all other classes so there's no reason not to switch classes and try to master them all.

- Arts you unlock are tied to specific weapons but Skills are usable for all classes.

- Affinity missions will also unlock Arts for you to use so it's worth doing them when they appear (Not to mention they're usually pretty fun compared to Normal or Basic missions)

When you look at the map you will see that some segments are highlighted and some are not in NLA. Each of those slightly-brighter segments has going to be something done there, whether a quest, Affinity Mission, or Heart-to-Heart. God have mercy on your free time.

I'm sixty hours and I've only completed 42% of the side-content in NLA, let alone the continents. Help.

Oh god I forgot

On the map view for non-NLA places they have different Icons. The icons that look like documents(Normal Mission) and two hands shaking (Affinity Mission) does not mean that there's a mission to pick up from there. Instead it just means you'll be going there for a mission that you pickup elsewhere.

Also every once in a while do upkeep on your Frontier-Nav probes. You'll need them for certain quests (Like have Frontier-Nav produce 150,000 credits) as well as Miranium and income.

I realize I've pumped nearly 50 hours into a game that I still feel "meh" about Help.

Slight clarification; these quests aren't story-related at all, but it's worth persuing them anyway just as a reminder to sort your probes around to better spots and upgrade them once in a while.

Yes - it is viable. However, I wouldn't recommend it until playthrough #2 or until you're comfortable with the combat and mechanics of the game.

Great game, btw. I've been playing/following it since early access and I think the release is loads better than what I expected it to be.

Satellite Reign - this may be pretty obvious but when you get let into the main "world" your first goal should just be to unlock all the fast travel and hack all the ATMs. You'll be able to do most of them before going to missions, and I think most or all of the missions for each zone come from hacking fast travel points.

I run a "one of each" team and am not sure if that's even optional, but I would prioritize the various "open door" talents on each relevant character: hacking, circuit breach or whatever, and global scan.

I'm not sure what the right idea is for the Sniper but boosting stealth and the sword attack is a lot of fun.

It looks like Syndicate but plays a lot more like Commandos.
