Dogstoyevsky posted:Bootcha/fuzzknot come on guys there is a very dominant school of thought that says chili is not supposed to have beans and you gotta acknowledge that at least, it's like ignoring the 95 theses to say that chili must have beans. Beans is a northern thing. For what it's worth, beans are a cheap replacement for more meat. I suppose I concentrate on overall taste and texture. On the other hand, I'm also still wracking my head about a "Chicago Dog" style chili: Ground pork and chicken, a dollop of neon sweet relish, chopped hotdogs, a spear of pickle, stuff like that. Might have to investigate bread bowls of black poppy seeds. More sweet and savory than hot.

Back on topic, I've read up again what is planned for exploration in Star Citizen and wow, it's basically the same as in 2013, when I first checked. Everything seems either not very well thought out (with about a hundred systems, there'll be more players then jump points to find, even with jump points changing over time, this is just not going to work out) or incredibly half-baked, with descriptions like "presumably" and "it will be". Nothing of this apparently made it into their tech demo anyway, so the 2016 release seems more and more unlikely. Really, the best outcome for CIG is a Squadron 42 release, followed by a mess of buggy persistent universe releases just so they can bag whatever money is left and skamper away. Because Star Citizen is really, really unlikely to survive long enough for even half that crap to be implemented. And with some ideas being outright demented, it probably would be even worse if they were implemented. This is the thread I've looked at, most of the sources seem to be whatever was going to a certain developer's mind at the moment.

They can't accept that it won't happen. So besides Everquest and Wing Commander, what are some other niche IPs with autistic followers from that time period? If we can figure out another one, let's start a Kickstarter project to recreate it. We can't lose.

EQ's popularity took off during a time when it was really the only game in town, and it was a massive time sink that really no one outside of existing MMO players can devote to (who are mostly playing WoW or EVE or whatever at this point). Trying to resurrect it seems like an exercise in folly. Anyone who remembers sitting and waiting several span of minutes to regenerate mana positively along with all the unnecessary time wasting is trading entirely on nostalgia and is going to get a sad, steamy turd if they try to bring it back to life.

comatose posted:Does anyone actually understand their logic on PTU build numbering? Ignoring the whole 2.0 thing for an alpha, the patch notes from 2.0x to 2.1 are bug fixes and a new ship which for some reason means they went up a version number and also make you download the whole client again. They aren't even sticking to conventional build numbering anymore. Take a look at their build numbering for the v1.x engine (used by AC) and compare to v2.x and you'll see. I suspect that it ties into croberts wanting to give the illusion of major progress. And ofc he used that to justify no longer giving refunds.

A real game reaches "Alpha" when all the game systems are completed and functioning, and you can see what the whole game will look like when finished, but when no comprehensive QA and bug sweep have been completed. A real game reaches "Beta" when they believe they have fixed all the bugs - then it will either go to closed or open playtesters for another bugsweep. Then they go "Gold", ship the game, then we all download a 6TB zero-day patch because nobody gives a poo poo about QA any more. It's not just marketing purposes, but also to show some progress. Despite it being 99% bug fixes due to the premature release of 2.0 for the anniversary stream. They don't have any "patching" strategy. At all. All they do is add/remove/update certain files. Hence the consistent size of the build releases. And since they use Perforce, that's why they can do it that way. The monthly server costs are phenomenal and there is no way that they can sustain this. They have to introduce proper binary file patching at some point. But since most sane people don't expect them to be around long enough to do that, that's probably a moot point. ps: Usually, after Beta, you go to Release Candidate for a final sweep; before going Gold.
