And then he bitches that people keep posting pictures that are too big for his dial-up connection. Back when Livejournal was the thing, you'd get people complaining that your image was too big for their connection. It's 2001, cable isn't uncommon now!

I'm totally going to be a lovely old man who makes younger people listen to Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park on their future whatever device and then says "Yeah, I know it sounds like garbage, that's because you have to listen to it on the original compact disc to get the real experience."

Discouraging large images decreases overall internet quality. Everyone should post high detail super high res images whenever possible! Don't make future internet images lovely because someone is on 56k/their phone/whatever other temporary personal issue they have!

"Feature phone" used to refer to phones that did something more than your basic flip phone but were not as fully-featured as a smart phone. Even the bottom-of-the-barrel piece of poo poo burner phone is now pretty well-featured, so it just refers to "phones that aren't running Android, iOS, or Windows".

I'm pretty sure a feature phone still just means a basic phone with a special gimmick. The Nokia Lumia 1020 with that bizarre 40+MP camera was a feature phone, normal smartphone with the gimmick that it took pretty drat amazing photos. Unlike the okay to decent photos that the average phone takes with a generic 5 to 13MP camera.

mystes posted:I don't know if the latter statement is true, though. I have a coworker who still has a basic flipphone and it doesn't play music or have proprietary apps or anything else that you might associated with a "feature phone" in the original sense. It doesn't even appear to have J2ME support, which previously even basic flipphones had. That's why if anything I think the meaning of the word has changed if all non-smartphone phones can be called "feature phones" now. We've probably gotten to the point where it's cheaper to build a no frills smartphone than a feature phone that's going to have a keyboard, moving parts, and a non-standard screen size. The software needed to run the phone and support any apps costs more than stock Android also. Manufacturers tried to make feature phones that were also kind of smartphones. Microsoft had the Kin and I think HTC put out a Facebook phone. All failed miserably.

Look at Mr. Fancy Streaming Porn over here. Let's see you download 30 second preview clips that come in sets of four to a page, then we'll talk. If you were patient and a little lucky and had file organization skills, you could eventually edit them together into a complete scene.

I know this isn't really the type of stuff meant to be posted here and its not quite space jam funny, but its kind of on topic. Steve-O, from Jackass fame had a 4 episode tv show on usa back in 2007. For some reason, the only part of the old website still up is the application, which includes a section to type your pager number. http://www2.usanetwork.com/series/drsteveo/application.html http://www2.usanetwork.com/series/drsteveo/Dr_Steve-O_Application.pdf Its also a little snapshot of what their website used to look like in 2007, as it looks completely different now.

Another obsolete technology: games that are not optimized for older systems. I built my PC back in 2012, not as a gaming rig. I am able to play new games like Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear V, at lower specs, even though the machine is pretty old by gaming standards. I remember when I was a kid that pc games were basically made for new computers, not optimized at all for older rigs. So many games that couldn't be run because the game didn't understand lowering specs...

Your power plans explode in a few seconds because 50 years goes by almost instantly.

Isn't it also something to do with gaming generally being much more console-focused now? The PC gaming market is smaller so publishers put more resources into making console games or something like that? Probably also something to do with the rise of casual mobile gaming.

Haha, I ran into that when I got a gaming laptop for my birthday back in the late 2000s and picked up Deus Ex on a Steam sale. Without any patches that motherfucker would run at 2-3x speeds which was hilarious until I got past the opening menu. The solution I stumbled across involved manually going into the hardware settings and disabling all but one of the processor cores before starting the game.
