Other than a couple instances of being lucky, which is every character in the entire series, what did she do that was particularly Mary Suish? For Star Wars protagonists she seems well below the bar set by Luke and his daddy.

I put earlier that it's not something that I totally buy into because I do feel the movie gives you enough to just accept it. But I believe the most common complaints is that she's never flown the falcon before and flies it like an absolute pro, then semi-masters the force in no time at all. The Mary Sue moniker is probably more apt than most because she's literally shown to be a fangirl of the 'original' movies. She knows the stories about Han and Luke etc, she even has memorabilia. It's purposeful of course since the bad guy is a Vader fanboy as well.

I think the argument is entirely overblown anyway and personally think it's just a JJ Abrams thing of distracting you from some issues by surrounding it with some excellent poo poo. I have much bigger issues with the nostalgia trend which is a big thing in the Disney/Kathleen Kennedy/Spielberg camp right now.

Yeah but not knowing the stories about Luke and Han would be insane as they helped take down the empire. She has a rebel helmet and it was shown she was scavenging a site of a battle between them and the empire. As for piloting the falcon, in a New Hope all Luke piloted was his land speeder, but he ended up flying and mastering an X-wing pretty fast. He also had a pretty good connection with the force as he was getting force ghosts and blowing poo poo up with it.

Don't forget that Poe had never flown a TIE fighter before and Finn had never manned a turret. Hell, Han hadn't even fired Chewie's laser crossbow before!

Right, I mean I'm happier just calling it bad writing than I am the whole Mary Sue thing because it's also something in STAR TREK as well. Kirk doesn't really have to go through anything, he's just an ideal captain. He doesn't need to learn anything to get to that point. Abrams tends to skip those parts of the hero's journey where they stumble and fall first so it gives the impression that all the characters are hyper-competent.

In a new hope how did Luke stumble and fall?

Luke doesn't stumble, exactly, but he is portrayed as a kid who hasn't found his calling yet, doing menial labor on a farm and whining. Rey is a deft scavenger from the get go, which looks cool, but dramatically is somewhat less satisfying when it builds up to her doing different cool things. (This would be more annoying if she weren't sharing protagonist role with Finn, who provides the we're-in-over-their-head quality that she's missing.)

I just wish the movies expanded more on that she grew up with the stories of what a Jedi could do. Luke didn't and had to learn/be shown but if the movie established Rey had a full idea of the poo poo Luke had been pulling off in the last 30 years it would make a ton more sense. Like just adding in a extra bit to "Were the legends true" line to be something like "Were the legends true? The Jedi Mind Trick, Force powers?". That way when Rey starts reading Ben Solo mind/using the Jedi Mind Trick its just apart of her realizing she is a Jedi/experimenting instead of Oh she is a master now.

For real. I used to get annoyed with the whole "Star Wars fans don't like Star Wars" thing but they were right. You'll never please some of them. They like 3 movies in the series and that's it.

I listen to a podcast that made a great point about this very complaint, how it's actually a good thing when a movie lets you make some connections yourself instead of spoonfeeding the audience everything. It's called "We Hate Movies" but... get this... they actually love movies and have lots of smart things to say about them. You should check it out!

What are you, compared to my magnificence?
She asks something along the lines of, "Luke Skywalker really exists?" and later learns all the legends about him are true. I felt that was enough. I'm sure Luke's exploits in Jabba's palace are famous, and he tried the mind trick multiple times during that.

On a different subject about Rey: Luke was a sheltered farmboy that seemed over his head just by the Mos Eisley cantina. Rey is someone who had to survive on her own, and her only parental figure was a weird alien who didn't give a poo poo about her. I think it's all right that she is more immediately capable than Luke was.

Edit: wow thought I was in a completely different thread. Star Wars chat is everywhere man.

Jupiter Ascending really deserves its own episode. It's kind of fun to watch that movie (with a tall glass of water) and just append "space" to anything you see on screen. Space werewolf flying around on space rollerblades. Gotta climb the space ladder to escape the space mine on space jupiter. Space wedding.
