I couldn't imagine how terrible it would be to moderate SA or even worse, popular sites for minors. The poo poo they must deal with.

Not too long ago, as part of the ongoing change of Neopets content from Viacom to Jumpstart, and as a result of the fact that the underlying code of the site is from the 90s and no staff members are still employed who have familiarity with the old code, the word filter broke on Neopets and users were openly able to swear. Jumpstart didn't get involved for an entire day, and I don't think anyone was actually ever punished for breaking the rules. As soon as the mod tools went down and kids realized they could swear in yet another place on the Internet, it was harder to find users who WEREN'T breaking the rules.

So I guess the lesson is that for these minor-heavy websites where swearing is forbidden, remember that anything you tell kids not to do is something they are going to do in excess when given the chance.

I'm not sure if guild drama counts for this place, but I DO have a story about this.

There was a certain, reasonably popular group on City of Heroes' RP server. I didn't really know any of them, but they seemed nice enough. It turned out that the original leader of the group got demoted due to inactivity, and the new leaders kept it all going pretty well for years.

Then, the original leader came back, and was REALLY pissed that the group was 'stolen' from him. I don't exactly know the internal politics involved in all this, but he went off on his own to start a group of his own explicitly called the 'REAL [group name]'. His emphasis, not mine. As far as I know, this didn't last long, I think he got banned soon after. Possibly because the group he was trying to fight for ownership of was called the Erotic Exiles.

Power-mad drama gets infinitely more hilarious when it's about something clearly pornographic.

So back in the early days of Burning Crusade in WoW I joined a crappy raiding guild because mine had dissolved way back when everyone got tired of the big 40man raids. Most of the drama doesn't really come from the guild leader, except at the end of the guild's life. See half of us in the guild only still ran Karazahn or whatever because we wanted the stupid glowing horse that dropped, so we helped gear up newer guild members because we wanted that one drop. Finally it drops, leader is in the group. He takes it for himself because "I'm the guild leader, consider it a thanks for being such an awesome GM" and his friends go on about how everyone should agree while everyone else tells him to go gently caress himself and quits on the spot. So they were left with a small group of assholes and a bunch of newbies in blues and greens. Not especially interesting.

Another guild around the time Zul Aman or whatever came out, we'd been setting up raid groups for like a week in preparation for this and we were all pretty excited. Oh no, the raid leader is out sick! So the sub-leader takes over. Kicks half of us from the raid and invites people who aren't even from the guild. We quit, people who heard it afterwards but weren't there wound up quitting when the leader stood by his friend instead of kicking him. I've got boring stories of people mass quitting over stupid video game poo poo. I kind of regret wasting my life playing that game for a few years.

Years and years ago, a forum I posted at got a redesign that included a giant sidebar. The sidebar was a fixed width, so at a fairly standard (at the time) 1024x768 resolution it took up about a quarter of the screen, and there was no option to disable it. If you talked about the sidebar you got banned, and one subforum even got deleted for being a hotbed of anti-sidebar sentiment. The really funny part about this last bit is that all the moderators gathered in the admin's hotel room at a gaming convention to watch and film the deletion of this most vile of subforums, and someone even took a picture:

Those weren't the moderators. I'm pretty sure those were either the judges or just members who were around at MAGfest that day(probably a mix of both)

It's almost a decade ago though, so I'm kinda hazy on the details.

That site somehow attracted a lot of drama back in the day, not sure if it's still that bad, I haven't visited the forums for years. I still pop into the IRC channel occasionally though.

Yep. The battle was between one guy arguing for 8 (sun, mon, tue, wed, thu, fri, sat, sun) and literally everyone else trying to convince him it was 7. Someone had asked how many times they should work out per week if they want to do one-day-on, one-day-off, and dumbass was adamant the answer was always 4.

In the early 2000s I was part of a small Dragonballz fansite. Unrivaled something or another. The forum were significantly smaller than SA, something like 20-50 active people tops. There was only one admin who did any real banning, his username was named after the character johnny the homicidal manic, and he would make custom image for each time he banned someone. I wish I had some old screencaps or something of it but the site shutdown/died in like 2009 after years of slowly bleeding out. The owner converted the site from a dragonball fansite to a general anime site. They wrote like three articles and then disappeared from the site forever.

For a second I thought this thread was called Power Metal Mads and was thinking it was about Mads Mikkelson's metal band. Idris Elba plays drums.

Anyways, way back in the late 90s, early 2000s I used to post on a forum about weird stuff. Mostly i stuck to the stuff about pictures and videos and such, trying to avoid the sections about conspiracies and stuff because those were so full of white supremacists and neo nazis it wasn't funny (like today!). Some stuff was really freaky and weird. Like what the hell is that? that totally looks like a somewhat humanoid shape, maybe its a ghost! Oh that UFO looks kinda real!

Anyways, there was a person there that would post really poorly edited pictures of ghosts and aliens, or post screen shots from tv shows and movies and claimed they were LEAKED AIR FORCE FOOTAGE! or STOLEN AREA 51 IMAGES! When they were clearly a blurry picture of a paused frame from Star Trek or the X-files. Many other people also complained about his obvious fakes, but this guy was relentless. He knew the site admin so he was allowed to keep doing it. He would also go into other peoples threads and spam his images, call other peoples images fakes and so on. For some reason, he was made a site mod and proceeded to ban every single person on the forum that had ever criticized him. The funny thing is he did it manually, going through every thread on the forum and banning people for stuff from years ago. It was nuts. Lucky my posts were pretty infrequent, so it took a while for me to get banned, but seeing people banned slowly was insane.

There was a mod in a warhammer forum that when 3rd edition of 40k was released, he banned everyone who liked it, because the new rules made it impossible for him to win games because he had built his army around a super cheesy combo.

Back in the 90s, Warhammer 40,000 had a race of space dwarves called "Squats" who were phased out at some point.

For some reason, the mods on the official Games Workshop forums made a blanket ban on any talk of Squats whatsoever. This ban persisted for over a decade -- any post that so much as asked about space dwarves would get the entire thread locked, and the offending poster banned. The ban stayed in place until the forums were shut down in the late 2000s, but it was diligently enforced for their entire lifespan.

Not Mod Drama, but Warhams Nerd Drama, but I think this has something to do with certain 40K nerds assertion that the Warhamer Fantasy line takes place on a planet in the 40K universe, and that Sigmar is a lost Primarch. Fantasy nerds get super pissed over that for some reason.

To be fair, squats were dumb and should be buried and never talked about again.

I feel like it was gamespot, but there was a video game site where if you said anything bad about Nintendo (even as simple as "i am not interested in their games) you'd get banned by a mod who was obsessed and very salty that Nintendo was in some ways second fiddle to playstation at the time.
