Also perfect action movie? Come the gently caress on, Die Hard perfected that decades ago.

Right, that stuff was there, it just didn't take up much screen time. I mean that to its credit.

Both Fury Road and The Force Awakens benefitted a lot from their breakneck pace and lack of downtime. I am all in favor of movies having little downtime instead of being 3+ hour bloated monstrosities.

Are we just going to drive 'strong' (which means 'punches people' these days for some reason, see Mad Max, Hunger Games, Star Wars, Divergent, X-men, Avengers) female characters into the ground? Is it because action movies are the de facto supreme form of entertainment? Theres good art about strong and weak people of either sex. It seems to me that strong women have been a staple of dramas for decades, but nobody has cared much.
If you've come to this conclusion then you've found your way out of the hole that is the Joss Whedon school of "'strong' female characters".

But yeah in a tentpole blockbuster action movie I think women have finally reached equality when it comes to playing action heroes and having just as poor and thin motivations and as equally little character development as men have had in all the decades prior. That being said there are still cases where it's exceptionally lovely.

Really, it explained why villain guy was in charge or how? When?

Mad Max was a great movie but it was totally devoid of context, which in many ways is why it worked as well as it did.

He was in charge because he was a military leader in a lawless wasteland and gained a following using a cult of personality and took over an important resource and made himself into a head of a religion. Why the does it matter when?

It's been months since I've seen it dude but I remember that.

What's up! That movie ruled! It was just two hours of everyone trying to out-smug each other, however futile the effort was whenever Henry Cavill or Hugh Grant was in the scene, and every second of it was glorious.

Then you'd probably like Spy, because a big part of why her character is such an effective spy is because people think fat women are worthless garbage so it's that much easier for her to murder the poo poo out of them.

I love watching The Dove Affair from the original series. It's a solid hour of Robert Vaughn and Ricardo Montalban having a scene-stealing competition. The movie captured the feel of the series quite well, which is a relief because the trailers were much more... what's the right word, blockbuster-y, than the actual movie.

Yeesh. And the last four days before New Years isn't really primo available TV watching nights either....I feel like a kid cramming for a test after slacking all semester.

EDIT: That's not even counting the random TV I've come across this year, that I need to remember.

I've gotta say I definitely enjoyed John Wick more than Fury Road or Star Wars. They did a really good job of establishing the "world" that he operates in without running it into the ground.

Fury Road was good and rewatchable but try as I might I don't really feel it as much as some of you "best movie of the year all years" guys. There are a couple parts that really drag.

The ending bit of Contact kind of undermines it main theme. It's a good film, but it kind off gets lost thematically. Like they wanted to have "religious ppl r dum" and "the gubment"/" top men" instead of "the prophet Jodie Foster".

Yeah I feel the same, even though I definitely watched my fair share of shows this calendar year I'm trying to squeeze in one more before I get to my list, but closing the polls as soon as the ball drops feels a bit too early for me. Maybe I'll still post it afterwards and just not care about not getting included in the results.

Die Hard has some issues.

The scene where Willis throws the body onto the cop's car is confusing. It looks like Willis is shooting the machine gun when he says "welcome to the party, pal" when it's one of the Germans. It's clearer on the second watch but that scene is a mess.

When Hans is pretending to be American and then points the gun at Willis and cocks the hammer it looks like he tried to pull the trigger and it was blank. So the moment is spoiled when he tries to shoot for real.
Those are some incredibly minor problems.

The BBC just did a fantastic version of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. The cast is full on amazing (it includes Charles Dance, Aiden Turner, Burn Gorman, Miranda Richardson, Toby Stephens, Noah Taylor), the way its shot is beautiful and the story is as great as it's always been. I never think much of our costume dramas but this was a great watch and worth tracking down if you can find it.

yeah, I mean, that's not surprising since mainstream hollywood is more concerned with pleasing a wide audience.

This isn't a diss, this is just me pointing out that pleasing a wider group of people without knowing their taste was literally a goal of F7.

edit: This movie talk keeps confusing me about what thread I'm in.

So now that Dark Matter is on netflix, I've started watching it. It's pretty good. Nothing fantastic, but fun and good for the genre. 3 episodes in so far, and it's funny, moves at a decent pace, and has decent action.

Three and the Android are my favorite characters so far.
