As much as I'd enjoy him deciding that Varys = Hoid it'd mean we'd have to wait longer for more Stormlight Archives books. I'm not ok with that, especially after reading the teaser chapter.

I guess he could have a batch command he runs at the end of the day that dups the drive? It really bothers me he backs up on floppy. like aesthetically. it just seems really loving wrong.

Sometimes I hate Live Journal my life.

I've been working all day five years on a new post book, a long long long look back continuation on the year that is ending of my life's work, and all the things that happened in it, the good and the bad.

I know, I know. I should have broken it up worked harder, that is to say, at all. Made Cranked it out in three posts years, or four.

But I didn't, and somehow I lost never wrote it.

No problem, I figured. LJ WordStar has a "restore previous draft" function.

Sadly, however, when I use it, I get a short two paragraphs post that I started last night and then abandoned, after deciding I didn't want to post write about that after all.

Today's post This year's book, the long long long long one (and it wasn't finished started), seems to have vanished into not materialized from the ether, and I can't get it back.

Nor do I have the energy (or time) to recreate it.

Hell of a way to end the year.

Sorry.

Enjoy the HBO show, I guess?

That's amazing, I thought this was some kind of parody at first. Just think, this means for a couple of his longer books he had to split them across two floppies :psyduck:

The last blog post has GRRM sounding like he has finally thrown in the towel.

quote:

But the book's not done.

Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there's a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. (Those 'no pages done' reports were insane, the usual garbage internet journalism that I have learned to despise). But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still... and that's if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.) Chapters still to write, of course... but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures.

quote:

But I won't make excuses. There are no excuses. No one else is to blame. Not my editors and publishers, not HBO, not David & Dan. It's on me. I tried, and I am still trying. I worked on the book a couple of days ago, revising a Theon chapter and adding some new material, and I will writing on it again tomorrow. But no, I can't tell you when it will be done, or when it will be published. Best guess, based on our previous conversations, is that Bantam (and presumably my British publisher as well) can have the hardcover out within three months of delivery, if their schedules permit. But when delivery will be, I can't say. I am not going to set another deadline for myself to trip over. The deadlines just stress me out.

"If it goes well," which is code speak for another year at least. The whole post is him admitting that he's never going to meet a deadline and so he's just going to get it done whenever.

Late March '16 with its proper ending lopped off just like Dance's was. Bantam's gonna panic again and try to bigfoot the show like they did in 2011 whether GRRM's ready or not.

Count on it.

GRRM himself outright dismissed this as a possibility. There are multiple paragraphs about how it won't be out before the next season of the show. He said it'll be months of writing in the best case scenario and after that it'll take the publisher 3 months to get it out. No book is coming the first half of 2016 and the publisher can't do poo poo to a famous author who doesn't care about deadlines.

2 more years? Are you talking about ADWD? That poo poo took 6 straight years and only got out the door because the publisher twisted his arm as the show was about to premiere.

This is what I keep wondering. The series is a giant cash cow at the moment, and while those "screw the deadline, its done when it's done" statements from fans are nice and supportive, I imagine he does have a commitment to his publishers that he can't ignore. It feels like the more the schedule slips, the less sales they will see of the book. I'm sure the publisher knows that.

Even so, that book would only cover about 2 seasons at most. He would then need to turn around the last book faster than he could ever handle. This was inevitable.

But his livejournal says he's depressed so we should all feel bad for poor ol' George.

At first when I started reading his post I didn't care because it was no surprise to me, I didn't start getting mad until the part where he tries to convince the readers that it doesn't matter the show will spoil the books because they can just enjoy both.
