Evanescence over FoW is actually hilarious, because FoW got a BNA nomination after their third album - despite having two legitimate, evergreen alt radio hits off of their first album.

Hello pop music people, I was reading about how Carly Rae Jepsen's August release was produced recently and I find it a very disturbing thing for the music industry. The whole album was made just to fulfill a goal, she had made popular singles before so her and her manager wanted to make a popular album that would also get some critical acclaim. They workshopped over 200 tracks, collaborated with heaps of artist's and then boiled it all down to 12 tracks. This kind of clinical and thought out album producing is messed up, music should be made because an artist had a burst of inspiration and wanted to get it all out, not because people wanted to meet their target goals so they whipped up a bunch of stuff, took it to sample groups, worked on what would have the most pop appeal and then released it for maximum profit. I listened to it and it shows, there's no inspiration there it just sounds like something some Swiss pop music engineers made in their high tech music lab, what the gently caress? Do you guys like this album?

Wait... she wrote a bunch of songs, then decided which ones would best fit together to form a successful and popular album?

Emotion doesn't really have that problem though? Yeah it's got a very meticulously-planned, arguably one-note sound, but it's definitely not something that was thrown together just to sell copies, it doesn't really fit with the trends of successful songs today. If you want to complain about someone mindlessly jumping on the latest bandwagon, you could criticize Rita Ora or Halsey or somebody like that. But I don't think Emotion really fits your argument here.

You have a very limited view of what music should be. There are plenty of songs/albums that were a burst of inspiration that are dogshit, and a bunch of albums made through collaboration and winnowing down that are really good. Think of the album like a movie, and the artist as an actor. Some movies are great despite not having an exceptional performance by a particular actor, and some are completely driven by an actor, or pair of actors, in the same way a movie can be driven as a director, writer, or producer.

Emotion sounds good. It sounds like neon and feelings being injected into my veins, and I like it. That first sax riff is my favorite thing in the world right now.

Well that seems reasonable to me (aside from "over 200 tracks", which sounds like bullshit, but workshopping lots of tracks that don't make the album and collaborating with lots of artists doesn't seem like a strike against an album)

If you're not into heavily commercialised lab music, maybe the pop music thread isn't for you? I mean, this thread is mostly talking about huge chart artists with large amounts of money pushing them around. The only way it could be any more manufactured is if we veered into jpop/kpop idol stuff.

Hmmm.. I still really don't get this attitude. I love pop music! Always have. But I sure don't like heavily processed lab music that is manipulatively made purely for greed, profit and desperate fame-seeking.

I don't understand why people are OK with that, but I don't try to force my opinions down their throats. I think it's wrong that you want to deny people the right to their own opinions.

I freely admit to not knowing a huge amount about the music industry, but isn't most of the top 40 stuff this thread tends to focus on all passed by a dozen focus groups? There's no way people aren't running Katy Perry and Kesha and Charli XCX and people like that through this stuff, right? For all their image, I think I'd be pretty surprised if people like Taylor Swift and Adele weren't also having their stuff run by some manager telling them what to put on the album and what's a single and what can go in the bin or get held back for some concert.

To me, that post kind of seems like me going into the metal thread and saying "do they have to shout so much?" Am I that off base with the way the music industry is at the pop level?

For what it's worth, I don't really care what's behind my music, I just like putting nice sounds into my ears and I think Emotion has a lot of nice sounds on it.

Managers and record companies and radio exercising a really cynical degree of control over the stars has been around as long as there's been a music business, anyway. You don't even have to go back very far to see examples - Kelly Clarkson's big feud with Clive Davis is probably the biggest example in the past decade, and there's stories about how Whitney Houston was picked out for stardom in the 1980s because Phyllis Hyman wouldn't do what Clive Davis told her to, or how Berry Gordy sent his stars to finishing school and told them to perform Broadway tunes and trad pop standards in their live shows because he wanted them to appeal to the sort of audiences who went to supper clubs (i.e. old white people who were scared of the civil rights movement).

Anyway, I've just found out that that NHS Trust choir beat Justin Bieber to get this year's Christmas No. 1. Didn't seem like as big a deal this year. Of course, the last competition for the top slot that felt "important" was 2009 when Rage Against the Machine got it. That was fun to follow. Even the years The X Factor has effectively removed itself from contention by finishing a week earlier haven't been very interesting. My mum says it used to be a lot of fun to follow when she was younger, but I imagine that's a bit of a rose-tinted view on her part.

I've listened to a bunch of pop music over the last week or so (thanks Apple Music on long car-rides!), and I have some collected thoughts:

*Demi Lovato has pulled ahead of Selena Gomez in their inevitable comparison, thanks to Confident being so loving catchy and awesome. I like Hands to Myself (it's a nice song about Ecstasy, which you don't get often on the radio), but I don't like Same Old Love as much.
*Halsey's New Americana is pretty bad, even after getting it stuck in my head. It's a more conceited We Can't Stop, and it's not even close to as good as We Can't Stop.
*I miss Kesha. Dr. Luke should gently caress off back to Sweden and let her make the electronic hair metal album she is destined to make.
*I miss pop music Gaga as well. I like jazz standards Gaga, and actress Gaga is alright, but I want another ARTPOP.
*Alessia Cara is only going to get better as she ages, which is pretty awesome because Here is so great, but nothing she's done since has lived up to it yet.
*Lunchmoney Lewis is such a random person to be playing on the radio, but Bills was catch, and Ain't Too Cool is another great 80's throwback in a year filled with them. He can fill the spot Cee-Lo left when he revealed his jackassery. Anyone who sincerely uses the phrase "Boogie-oogie-oogie" in the year 2015 is alright with me.
*The Weeknd sounds like Michael Jackson making a horror movie soundtrack, and I wish he'd make all of his music videos into horror movie riffs. I thought In The Night could be a great Phantom of the Opera riff.
*Brits need to step the gently caress up. Adele, Ellie Goulding and OD are all lagging behind some of the better stuff I've been listening to.
*Holy gently caress Daya (girl who sings Hide Away) is only 17 what the gently caress???
*Who Is Fancy has two things going for his new single: making Meghan Trainor tolerable, and being the first song I've heard on pop radio to be sung by a man who is specifically singing about a man, in the lyrics. (Sam Smith doesn't ever say "boy" or anything that hints at a gender, unless I missed something)
*Meghan Trainor is still awful, but Like I'm Gonna Lose You is not terrible. I blame John Legend.
*Twenty One Pilots is the next Flobots
*Focus is alright, but I don't have any hope that Ariana Grande's new album will have as many killer singles as her last one did, which is understandable because that album was filled to the loving brim with smashes.
*Mike Posner is apparently on his way back? With a song that makes an AVICII joke in the first line? The gently caress?
*I hope Selena Gomez kicks Bieber in the dick, because his music is better when he's sad and in pain, and he's still annoying.
*Nothing on the radio is as good as Run Away With Me or Style, with the possible exception of Here.

Most important question: Is there a single white guy on the radio who isn't a whiny little poo poo? I mean, Pete Wentz is like, the least whiny one who has a hit right now, which is truly impressive.

The whole case is basically a textbook example of a powerful man abusing a woman who is under contract with him. That link is a great overview of the case, which basically says that Dr. Luke is a piece of poo poo, Kesha went to rehab for eating disorder in early 2014 and after that, filed a suit to get out of her huge, absurd contract (signed before she was famous) with the man who abused her (sexually and emotionally), named Sony in the suit because she alleged that they knew the circumstances she was in, multiple times asked Sony if she could make an album without him and his label (they said no), and eventually filed an injunction to get the case heard faster because her entire career is dying if she can't record anything.

The shittiest thing I read in that whole article is this quote from Sony Records after they were named in the suit:

quote:

Sony finally addressed the dispute in a written response, stating: “Sebert cannot have it both ways. She cannot claim that Gottwald intimidated her into silence, then — as an apparent afterthought — seek to hold Sony and Kemosabe Records liable for failing to act on conduct that she did not report.”

Her complaint, in her lawyers words, was “Dr. Luke’s proclivity for abusive conduct was open and obvious to [Sony Music Entertainment] executives, who either knew of the conduct and turned a blind eye, failed to investigate Dr. Luke’s conduct, failed to take any corrective action, or actively concealed Dr. Luke’s abuse.” So Sony is basically saying "you didn't make any complaints, so how could we know all this horrible poo poo (that we aided and abetted because we totally knew it was happening) was going on?"

I just really want Kesha to come back, make her awesome music, and basically be the heir to Stevie Nicks she is destined to be.

Dr. Luke is such an rear end and I feel terrible for Kesha. From everything I've heard from people who've worked with her, she's the most kind-hearted charitable person, and it's awful that he took advantage of her and treated her like poo poo. I hope she gets free from that contract, writes a ton of amazing material, and has the massive comeback she so deserves.
