Yeah, I wouldn't be too surprised if it turns out to be some kind of Psi-soldier that's locked behind plot and/or research which would explain why Firaxis haven't released any info on it.

The big surprise simply being a psionic rework would be pretty lame considering how they've been open about all the other class and unit reworks in the game, especially with them being more forthcoming on the DLC class (Shen's Last Gift as a title kinda narrows down what the class could possibly be.)

...well except for Sectopods and Ethereals (unless they're not in it but I have my doubts about that), but that can be chalked up to Jake Solomon wanting to taste everybody's tears as freshly as possible when we first fight the 20 year improved versions of those units.

Dave Tate's downsy face approves.
So, for someone who never got around to finishing a vanilla game on higher than normal, but is having a hilariously easy time with Long War normal going into month 2, am I going to regret bumping the difficulty up? It seems like the panic bars just aren't moving at all and the closest I got to getting phased was the late in the month bomb disposal mission that I pulled out of by the skin of my teeth mostly due to poor planning rather than any threat the aliens presented. Hard to imagine I'm just getting lucky considering the number of missions I've finished to get through a full Long War month.

Addendum: completely cleaned house in the first Terror Mission, too; lost 9 civilians, but finished it without getting shot at at all.

I went back to vanilla ironman and had the silliest squadwipe I've ever seen. Everything is going perfect, no deaths so far. First terror mission rolls in, no OTS yet but I have laser rifles and 2 heavies so I'm ready.

I get a round of unlucky misses, a new pod activates on the alien turn, and I find myself in a position where I need to use a rocket to kill a single 2 health chryssalid. No point gambling more shots this turn with other aliens active, straight to Plan B: explosives. Rocket misses completely, kills my own soldier, another panics, losing me the guaranteed kill I had on a floater that turn. I hadn't killed the floater because Plan C was to rapid fire at the chryssalid from cover should the rocket miss catastrophically, but he was panicked now. Plan D was to move my support point blank and kill the chryssalid even though he'd die to the floater, but he had already died to the rocket.

There was no Plan E, my turn just ended and everyone died. :sigh:

I really wish the fifth class will just be a bog-standard infantry rifleman grunt. Skill choices will be between perks called "Shoot More" and "Shoot Better" etc.

Panic in long war works a bit differently, on a scale of 1-100 instead of 1-5. There's more of a slow, inexorable rise. The aliens will get better as you progress, gaining perks, health, and damage resistance. But if you aren't feeling challenged, go for it.

If the choice in build is between shoot more or shoot better. The choice is the classic gunner that shoots twice or a quick shot sniper without squad sight.

Yeah psi panic tends to get you shot at in vanilla, psi inspiration was used more in panic. TK field was okay but not preferrable to mind control where it gave you a free meat shield.

I wonder if they'll put in cheat names like they did with Ken Levine, Sid Meier or Otto Zander.

e: in XCOM 2 I mean, I never actually tried using the name cheats in EW/EU. It'd be interesting if you could get a glimpse of the end-game gear and skills by changing a character name.

Not really accurate. Snap shot snipers with ITZ are the kings of shooting more, and it depends on what your definition of "shooting better" is. One target with high HP and the assault comes out on top--more than one target with ~10 hp and the sniper wins. Snipers get more aim growth, but we're talking about 2 trees for the same class so that's moot.

Snipers have only 2 situational skills that allow them more aim (DGG and Executioner) and one that increases crit and crit damage on only 1 shot every few turns (headshot). They also get ITZ or double tap, both "shoot more" abilities.

Assaults get Aggression (+10-30% crit), Close and Personal, Rapid Fire, Bring Em On (+1-5 crit damage), and Killer Instinct (+50% crit damage after Run N Gun). That's a good mix of "shoot more" and "shoot better" (more damage).

Anyway, what I'm hoping to see is a 5th class with an assault's aim growth, the option to use a higher damage, slightly less accurate LMG that shreds armor along with his AR, and that can select from abilities like: bullet swarm, collateral damage (with LMG), suppression (perhaps giving suppression with the LMG the Danger Zone perk by default), some hybrid skill that combines 2 effects from like Will to Survive/Resilience/Tactical Senses and/or Extra Conditioning/Sprinter, Rapid Reaction, Sentinel, Flush, Aggression/Bring Em On. Throw in some new stuff like come AoE with the LMG or high velocity/penetrating rounds that can damage enemies in a line and go through cover (for reduced damage), or whatever real game designers would cook up and I think you'd have a pretty cool 5th class that excels at mid-range firefights.
