Wait. The entire series?
Well, just about, we're covering every game, including the Xtreme games, except for Command Mission, this poo poo is going to be long enough without including an entire RPG

Is this going to be an informative playthrough or is it going to be a rambling stream of consciousness?
Both! We actually recorded two versions of each game, one version is just a group of friends, chilling on the couch, shooting the poo poo. We figured not everyone would appreciate that, so we recorded a separate version where just two of us sit down and keep our commentary focused on the gameplay and relevant trivia. For more information, please watch the Primer video, it covers the differences in more detail. If you don't want to bother with that, just pick a version at random, if you enjoy it, sweet, if not, try the other one.

How often will you be posting?
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, at 5pm Pacific, from now until we finish.

What about thread participation?
In the interest of giving you all a consistent upload schedule we have prerecorded all of the episodes and are in the process of editing them, which makes guess commentary a tad difficult. If you would like to cover something we missed or didn't cover, such as the Zero storyline from X4, or want to do a special run (Buster only, speed run, etc) by all means go ahead, I only ask that you wait until we hit the relevant game before you do.

Any spoiler policy?
X isn't exactly a story heavy series, but just to be safe, the more obscure the game is the more careful you should be about spoilers. Everyone and their mother has played X 1 so go nuts, but hardly anyone has even heard of Xtreme, so try to avoid it. In the same vein, don't spoil X 8, thats the only one with a real plot twist that isn't widely known in the public conscious. And of course, once its been covered in the video its free game.

-STORY-

It is the year 21XX. While trying to find a fossil record, Dr. Cain, a human scientist, has uncovered a capsule with a robot from the past: Mega Man X. The capsule contained a warning message from Dr. Light, his creator:

Dr. Light posted:

WARNING:

"X" IS THE FIRST OF A NEW GENERATION OF ROBOTS WHICH CONTAIN AN INNOVATIVE NEW FEATURE - THE ABILITY TO THINK, FEEL AND MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS. HOWEVER THIS ABILITY COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. IF "X" WERE TO BREAK THE FIRST RULE OF ROBOTICS, "A ROBOT MUST NEVER HARM A HUMAN BEING", THE RESULTS WOULD BE DISASTROUS AND I FEAR THAT NO FORCE ON EARTH COULD STOP HIM.

APPROXIMATELY 30 YEARS WILL BE REQUIRED BEFORE WE CAN SAFELY CONFIRM HIS RELIABILITY. UNFORTUNATELY I WILL NOT LIVE TO SEE THAT DAY, NOR DO I HAVE ANYONE TO CARRY ON MY WORK. THEREFORE, I HAVE DECIDED TO SEAL HIM IN THIS CAPSULE, WHICH WILL TEST HIS INTERNAL SYSTEMS UNTIL HIS RELIABILITY HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB THE CAPSULE UNTIL THAT TIME.

"X" POSSESSES GREAT RISKS AS WELL AS GREAT POSSIBILITIES. I CAN ONLY HOPE FOR THE BEST.

SEPTEMBER 18, 20XX
T.LIGHT

X's design interested Cain, and he analyzed Dr. Light's notes. Months later, Cain was able to create robots similar to X, called Reploids, and they began to be mass-produced around the world. For unknown reasons, some Reploids began to act strange and attacked humans, being labeled Mavericks. To counter any possible threat, the Maverick Hunters were formed. Sigma, an advanced Reploid, was assigned to be their leader. X also became a member of the Maverick Hunters. Time passes and the Maverick Hunters are able to keep peace, but one day Sigma himself became a Maverick, being joined by other Maverick Hunters to start a war against humanity. Although X was by nature a pacifist, he had to do something, so he joined the new leader of the Maverick Hunters, Zero, to stop the ambitions of Sigma and the Mavericks.

I want to thank everyone that's helped out so far, ACES CURE PLANES, Gamesfreak, Dresh, and HeavySigh all gave Zero their own unique brand of love, Fionordequester, Gemcrim, and mkwong98 all gave us additional insight on the games, and anyone who commented gave us the motivation to finish this monster even when our apartment was launched back in time by the Sigma virus, and even those of you who watched and never commented, thank you all, so very much!

Up next we're going to take a bit of a rest, knock out some bonus content, then move on to the next series. Going forward I think its been decided we will be focusing on more Hunter style commentary, Irregular is fun but we got more personal pride trying to be informative. If you have any other feedback or constructive criticism we would love to hear it.

I permit your headcanon, as long as you permit my headcanon of Dr. Cain's password being "drcain" Because gently caress him and his monumental stupidity.

I'm sure Dr. Cain's brilliant idea is that "Moore's law and Quantum computing has blown that 30 year Morality Tube thing out of the water, we only need 3 seconds!" But forgets that the Reploids processor is running as fast as his new Morality Tube's processor.

Sure, X has petabytes of memory, but only megabytes of cache? Processors in the indeterminate future suck.

I don't like the way the text appears all at once in the HD version - it's still got the old text appearing sound, but now it seems to imply that that's the sound of someone talking, which makes little sense to me.

I did an armorless run a few years back (including no dash) and there was exactly one jump in the first fortress level I couldn't pull off, but I think I could've done it if enemy spawns were handled differently.

I understand and agree that having the text appear immediately is a little jarring, if it helps, here's the reasoning.

Originally the Hunter version was going to use the exact same footage and commentary as the Irregular version, just with us muted and with text on screen long enough to actually be read.

When I put that version together I faithfully replicated having the text scroll on screen, I even manually stitched in background music and sfx to make sure it still sounded good after extending how long the text was on screen.

Then we decided the Hunter version should have entirely new footage and commentary, I tied copying over all the text work I did for the original but we found that the timing was completely different and would require significantly more time to clean up, so we bit the bullet and had the text appear immediately.

I agree that its not the best looking thing in the world, and its something I would like to go back and clean up some day, I just didn't want to keep holding up editing everything else to do it this time around.

Storm Eagle's story as of Maverick Hunter X holds that he was a talented and popular hunter who tried to stop Sigma's rebellion himself but was defeated and forced into working for Sigma against his will I guess out of a display of loyalty for his old commander. It actually could kind of jive with the double agent depiction in the manga, but the game doesn't show anything like that. Eagle was actually the first maverick I ever beat, without dash boots, when I was 7.

Rafiki's kind of odd as Mandrill depictions go because he's a lot scrawnier than most mandrills, and even has a long baboon tail while mandrills have little nub tails. The boss Ba-Boom in Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is a similar example of a mandrill with a common baboon tail.

Hmm, it should be the same quality as Irregular 1, they should have all been exported the same way. Can you take a screen shot with a timestamp? I'll take a look at it tonight.

Oh I went back and looked at Irregular 1 and you're correct, they're both the same. Still, whatever's going on in those videos isn't going on in the Hunter videos. Did you record them in a different way? It's weird that one set of videos appears to be interlaced and the other isn't.

Oh yes, the Irregular videos were originally recorded of an SNES via Composite cables , before the games had been released on the Wii U, the Hunter videos were recorded much more recently off a Wii U via HDMI.

The Irregular videos are focused on being entertaining and not so much informative (at least for the first few games) and is included mostly for completeness sake. If you want to watch some guys bullshit on a couch (and enjoy our brand of humor) you might enjoy this version, I know I still get a laugh out of them.

The Hunter videos are made with all the knowledge we gained from recording the Irregular videos. If you want an informative or technically proficient Let's Play, stick with these ones.

The subIDs for the Anglerges, those minibosses in Octopus's stage, are 80 and 82. There's an Anglerge at 81 that only blows, while the first only sucks and the third both sucks and blows. I guess they figured three is too many and took out the one that was the least threat to X.

The end of Octopus's stage has no vertical scrolling, hiding the fact that...

There is a second, redundant set of boss doors. Was there a plan for a secret Octopus fight that's not underwater? Was this the original door that was only slightly hidden from view? Who knows?

Sounds like something you would only see in a TAS, I can't imagine the time savings would justify trying to pull off a frame/pixel perfect jump just to get a heart tank slightly faster in a live run.

Based on the water level in that picture, maybe the fight was originally intended to be half-submerged? I (Mith) haven't played X in a long while, so I can't remember if you have different physics while underwater, if so, maybe switching between the two types of physics either hosed with Octopus's AI or otherwise messed with the fight?

There is a general downhill trend in quality from 1-7, though it really doesn't start to noticeably drop in quality til 5, I can safely say X7 is the worst game in the entire X series. I honestly cannot wait until we get to those episodes.

Eh...I wouldn't say that, personally. Honestly, I thought X2 and X3 were better than X1. I mean, obviously X1 had the best story-telling, atmosphere, and soundtrack...but as far as gameplay went, you could tell that this was the very first X game ever made. Having the game's most important power-up (the Dash Boots) be something that you could potentially miss for 7 whole stages was something that radically affected the stage design for the game. The Dash Boots made the stages way too simple, since the designers were forced to accommodate those who may not have had it yet.

In addition, I don't feel like the game designers got the gameplay tempo entirely down in X1. X2 and X4 (X3, not so much, but that game was fun in other ways) were very good about throwing enemies at you without bringing the gameplay to a screeching halt, but X1 did not do that as well. It's probably because the game designers were still used to the slower pace of the original games, but IIRC, there were a lot of moments where the game forcibly stopped your progress by throwing a really bulky enemy at you that was easy to beat, but took a while to take down if you didn't know how. I'm speaking of the huge turtle things and two-legged robots smattered throughout all the stages, the sea serpents and wind blowers in Launch Octopus's stage, the ball-n'-chain guys, and etc...

And honestly, compared to all the crazy power-ups you could get for your leg and head armours later on, the upgrades here are a little...boring, in comparison, especially since you START OFF with the Dash Boots in every other game.

Now, am I trying to imply that X1 is a bad game? No, of course not. It's marvelous, and I'd definitely put it over X5-X7, in addition to the Mega Man Zero games that I've played (haven't played X8 yet, or anything from the newer series), but I feel like there's a lot of little things that put it behind X2-X4, at least if we're just talking about gameplay. If we're talking about presentation though, then yeah, it's definitely ahead of X2-X3 :). I mean heck, this game actually had FACE PORTRAITS! I still have no idea why they didn't keep those :psyduck:!

At 5:40, there's another place where I tried my darnedest to get in. Why would the ground under you look all hollow-like for no reason? Fortunately, I eventually gave up.

Today we begin our attack on Sigma's fortress! I'm sure with Zero's help everything will be alright...

I'm sure Rik has his own thoughts on this and will post them when he gets the chance, but I personally enjoy the simplicity of X1 over 2-4. Which is not to say they are bad games by any stretch, and you certainly bring up good points about the later games design superiority, I'm just a sucker for keeping things simple and tight.

One kinda interesting thing Maverick Hunter does with the buster upgrade is that it makes Zero's buster function differently from the capsule upgrade. Instead of the group of balls, the Zero buster fires a single focused power shot. The balls are a bit cooler, but the single shot seems in keeping with Zero's design philosophy and personality. I'll have more words about why it's cool to get Zero's buster later on, but I'm going to wait until we understand more about the character. Also kind of funny you guys bring up X and Zero double teaming Vile since they do exactly that in MHX's Vile mode.

I never actually made that connection about the cliff face before. That's a really excellent detail that goes to show the level of care that was put into this game.

I like how the Metools are still around. They're so overloaded through the whole series, that it seems like they're a species unto themselves by the time X rolls around, outliving the old robot orders and still being a part of the Reploid age.

The crescent of doom that X shits out is my favorite Xbuster upgrade of the series, period.

I like to think they're actually common pests in the series' timeline.

And they persist into ZX, complete with their own theme park, maybe there is some Met equivalent of Micky Mouse?
