Seriously, Chris flat out said that if it doesn't come from him it's just opinion. Hundred million dollar project and you can't trust any employee except the guy at the top.

Sure, as Chris is the voice of reason for CIG.

The illusion popped for me when in one of those (now looking back) idiotic "10 for the chairman" shows someone asked "if the transition between space and a planet will have a realistic and dynamic weather simulation so that sometimes it might be a huge challenge to land through a storm?". Chris answered with something along the lines of "Sure, we will look into that and try to implement it!".

Now I happen to have worked on "realistic weather simulation" as an undergrad slave worker in an academic context so my opinion about specifically that topic might be a little warped (I am far far away from beeing an expert on it, though) but even thinking about that is ridiculous and the correct answer should have been "Hahaha no, are you mad?".

Maybe I am hurfing too much about this but its like "Will you cure cancer with Star Citizen?" and Chris answers "Yeah, thats our 200m stretch goal!".

Sometimes it's not the bomb that's retarded.

CIG should start introducing small "cute" bugs to the game to pad out the notes.
Like a lightbulb burns out somewhere. Then write that they fixed it in one patch, but the same patch turns off a bulb somewhere else. They fix that breaking another later.
Shitizens download gigs of fixtures, find the whole bulb things cute and immersive and keep drooling.

Oh... I just realized CIG doesn't need to change their MO in any way since the effect is there already.

Pretty sure DiscoLando said in that interview video from a few pages back that their FPS work hasn't actually been incorporated into PTU?? Didn't they spend almost a loving year trying to get an advanced animations system in that meant your feet would be in the right place and you'd stop/start realistically and all that poo poo? This is probably the most incredible thing about this mess to me right now. It looks like a vast amount of time, and presumably money, has once again been thrown down the shitter because the management at CIG has no idea what's going on.
Someone confirm what he said in that video, I don't want to look at his insane hobo face again.

That's pretty much it. My understanding is that CIG tossed Illfonic to the curb after they discovered that everything Illfonic was working on was incompatible with the unholy abortion that is StarEngine. Mind you this is after they had to rework the animations seven times to satisfy Roberts. Eventually CIG took everything Illfonic had, shoved it all over to the newly created German office, and then let them scavenge what they could. This is after Travis Day spent several weeks over there trying to fix things, so who knows.

can someone explain to me in laymans terms why they are so big? the patch notes read like they're more of coding issues, which I can't imagine is something that takes gigs upon gigs unless they're also adding assets to the game, which of course they're not.

Is it just optimized trash that includes a bunch of redundant stuff for the end user or what? I know nothing about game development

They dont have a proper patching tool. Cryengine store its game data in a few big files packages (kind of like .CAB file, same idea), but if they fiddle with only one tiny bit of a part of the package you have the re-download the whole file.

So right now, let say there is a big file (8GB) that contain all the doors data for the game. If they change one toilet door color (1mb texture), you have to re-download the whole door file.

Its not patching, its re-downloading every part of the client that had changes.

me too! i actually still kind of love text adventure stuff, or 'interactive fiction' or whatever they're calling it now. they really were a cool gateway into loving videogames forever. i still remember being scared out of my mind as a ten year old playing the game "theatre", which holds up as a kind of creeping-dread-lovecraftian-horror drama.

text adventures were kind of proof that all you need for "immersion" (to bring it back to star citizen) is a good turn of phrase, the illusion of seamless interaction with the game system (like being able to anticipate the commands users might try out and providing non-generic responses for sensible attempts), and to provoke the imagination of the player. you don't need the fanciest god drat graphics ever, you don't need to be able to do absolutely everything. oh no god drat am i an old person?

The community will take care of it. CIG has plans to implement an API for the mobiGlas. Trust me, people will be making mini-games for that.

I'll be curious if CIG can derive an intelligent revenue stream in some way from opening up the API.

I'd love to see P2P microtransaction gambling with small carry fees. Picture opening your mobiGlas to make a bet on who's going to win the next race, sitting in your 890J watching a series at some race course.

Or gambling over Arena Commander matches. AC is going to exist in lore as a popular pastime and training tool. People already gamble on everything. I'm sure they will on 'sataball'.
