Why is every cryptocurrency obsessed with capping the eventual number of coins? It's completely nonsensical if you wanted to make a currency that people actually used to buy things instead of horde or speculate with. AFAIK only dogecoin doesn't which makes dog based meme money literally the best internet coins.

The Winklevoss' own around 8% of the current bitcoin's produced. There's a statistic going around stating that around 48% of produced bitcoins were stolen. It's gold for the computing generation without the messy physical product or legislation intended to protect consumers. So yeah, there are actual attempts to corner the market on something entirely fictional. It's very like SC, as I'm betting some of the whales are assuming that their buy in will increase in value.

Anybody remember Glitchless software and their vapourware MMO, Dawn?

Dawn was this pie-in-the-sky MMO idea that got announced around the time Everquest was launching Velious. It promised everything. Proceduraly generated continents, cultures, and characters. Permadeath. Player-created-everything. All they had were a few derpy screenshots and a big FAQ that, looking back, made some absolutely ridiculous claims. For a while they were selling T-Shirts and poo poo for their vapourware game, which people started to get nervous about after like six months. Then they opened up some Newgrounds-esque flash RPG that still exists to this day.

They did far less than CIG and people got sick of it much sooner. I have no idea why people believe in CIG so much.

EDIT: I can't (and I'm not) accusing SC of being vaporware since the code obviously exists. It's the promises I'm comparing to.

It was paid for by the father of one of the team who owned a golf shop, and they promised catapults that could launch fetuses, the feta-pault so to speak.

This is the specific hook, but there's a general phobia of inflation and 'debasement' in libertarian circles and right-wing economics in general, and bitcoin sprung from those cultures. The idea that your money is made-up bullshit dependent on other people/the government for its worth is terrifying to a certain cast of mind, so it needs to be backed by something solid like gold or 'maths'. That the gold standard is much more unstable than fiat currency and that bitcoins are prone to straight-up vanishing is immaterial when principle is at stake.

Note how creating new bitcoins is called 'mining' ala gold rather than 'printing'.

Amusingly, this was Glenn Beck's schtick for a while; talk about the pending collapse of the American economy (mainly due to misuderstanding the difference between running a country and a checking account), and then advertising gold in various different forms; from the thinly plated treasury proofs right through to tiny amounts of bullion.

At least two of the advertisers were later found to have been ripping people off because watching Glenn Beck means you also know nothing about precious metal spot pricing.

There's a huge number of semi-legitimate scams running at any particular kind in the US because there is little to no consumer protection of the kind found in Europe.

I don't think that dude was found guilty of anything. Sure it looks terrible but you can't ban all employees from working forever because the company they worked for was involved in criminal activities. As CFO he might have noticed something shady but he might not have realized what exactly was going on. poo poo, for all we know he tipped off the financial pigs.

Still, I agree that given the context it sure as hell looks like CIG went shopping for a CFO with a reputation of either being blind or looking the other way.
