Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.

IOwnCalculus posted:

A long-held school of thought is that bashing the gently caress out of a header like that, so that what used to be smoothly radiused bends and a circular cross-section throughout is now a mess of jagged dents, would reduce exhaust flow enough to kill a significant bit of horsepower. Granted, these are 1.75" primary-tube headers so even dented there's still a lot of area, but this is also a 560hp 6.6L engine. Like they mention at the end of the video, you most likely would see a significant drop by switching to 1.625" primary-tube headers.

(Since I'm bored at work.)

Bashing the pipe isn't going to change the area much, at least initially. The face you bash will be offset a bit by the pipe getting wider in the perpendicular direction.

I compared the cross-sectional area of a 1.75" dia circle (2.405 in^2) to the area of an ellipse that was squashed 1/4" from that initial circle (ie, I kept the perimeter the same as the amount of material shouldn't have changed (major axis = 1.955", minor axis = 1.5")) (2.303 in^2). Squishing it a 1/2" reduces the cross-sectional area by only 4.2%. It's like going from a 1.75" dia circle to a 1.71" dia circle.

Going from 1.75" dia to 1.625" dia circles, the area drop is 13.8%, or 3.5x more loss in area than bashing.

The different cross-sections shouldn't have an effect on drag (if I remember college right, that's just based on the surface area of the pipe, which shouldn't have changed, just deformed). You'd get a bit more pressure do to the drop in area, but that's only one factor in how much force you need to push the air through. I know the sharpness of a bend has a large effect on the energy loss of fluid through a pipe, so you want to make those as smooth and large as possible.

tl;dr: Unless you are bashing the tubes enough to be creasing and pinching them, you're not decreasing the cross-sectional area as much as you'd think.

This is awesome and I'm glad someone is saving this for posterity. My grandparents were diehard GM fans, but when the lease was up on my Grandma's '81 Seville was up, she bought an '84 New Yorker Turbo. 7 year old Goober Peas thought that car was the most amazing thing ever - between the electronic gauges, dashboard talkyman, the turbo, the buttony leather seats with inboard controls, moonroof, and boxed in rear windows it was like riding in an amazing gadget filled limousine.

Unfortunately she kept it for 18 months, at least one of which was spent at the dealership. One thing I remember is being on the highway, and talkyman would randomly tell you to fasten your seatbelts (which were already fastened), then a few minutes later you'd get a random 'Thank You'

Hot Rod Garage does a mini tub on a 66 Chevelle.

The more time Tony gets on camera the better he is, and having Lucky to bounce off of works even better. Laughed my rear end off at "eight inches".

I did enjoy this episode, but some of his earlier ones put me off. His delivery is very monotone and didn't seem as nearly as engaging as Friberger. This episode does show he has improved since I last watched it.

He would've been in the Daytona and then most likely the GT40 had he not died at Indy in '64.

Dave got the first wins in the Kings and the Daytona, too. I wish he would have gotten a chance with the Daytona Super Coupe.

There's a huge chance he would've been the 3rd driver in a GT40 with AJ Foyt and Dan Gurney, too.

Funny thing is, in that lineup, Dave was probably the best pure driver of the three. Sadly, that's probably a small part of why he died, you can't manhandle an Indycar (especially in 1964) at the Speedway and expect to walk away.
