Reiner is armored titan and Bert is colossal titan.

Titan shifting and Titan powers are transferable upon consumption of someone with powers or by injection.

Eren got turned into a titan first by injection from his father, then gained shifting powers by immediately eating his father.

Reiner, Bert, and Annie were the force behind the initial attack on Wall Maria. Their mission was to find the "coordinate" power, the power to control titans, which Eren received by eating his father (who in turn stole it from the royal family by eating their daughter/Krista's sister) and can barely control.

Krista is actually Historia Reiss, an illegitimate child of the King of Everything. There was a civil war and now Historia is the Queen of Everything.

Reiner, Bert, and Annie were sent from a group of titan shifters. Their leader showed up and is now fighting with Reiner (RIP?) and Bert to gain Eren's coordinate powers. Eren and co. are conversely trying to plug wall Maria with Eren's newly gained crystallizing power (the same kind that Annie had used to encase herself).

If the group makes it, they will enter the basement. Eren still has the key, given to him by his father before his sacrifice. They will presumably get to the basement at the conclusion of the current epic-as-gently caress battle between the titan shifters and our heroes.

Hopefully this saved you some time and trouble!

Monkey trouble was a huge mystery that was revealed to be the titan shift leader.

In retrospect, this is a pretty cool story that has a rare condition of being well-planned to the point that weird, mysterious stuff from the early chapters is still being elaborated upon (most recently, Marco's death, which I didn't even think had a purpose beyond shock value/establishing that anyone, no matter how talented, was at risk).

Only things that detract imo were the author's decision to keep Sasha and Connie alive. It would've been crushing to see them die by their home towns, but they are kinda pointless now.

So I stopped reading this around the time the main character got kidnapped and they were chasing him and the Titans through out the forest.

I stopped reading it because I got really tired of the writer obviously having no idea where he was going with the story. Every time they got close to a mystery he would write in some excuse to not reveal anything. First that lady got trapped in Crystal before they could interrogate her. Then they find out some church dude knows everything but wouldn't you know it he promised not to tell any one. Shucks. And then while kidnapped and listening in on the story the main character decided to take a nap instead of learning the mystery.

I'd like to get back into this but not if they are still running in the same circles over and over again. Are they actually any closer to learning anything? Have they even gotten the key yet?

Not revealing the mystery right off the bat means the author doesn't know where he's going? Okay then.

Actually, blue-balling reveals whenever it looks like something major about a setting's ontological mysteries could potentially be uncovered is pretty common among fiction writers who are still trying to figure out wtf they're doing, either with regards to the mystery itself or when to actually drop the reveal on people. So it's a perfectly reasonable assumption to make if you're worried about getting suckered in by "mystery box writing" a la Lost. It's also why I dislike works that rely too heavily on hiding some foreshadowed big twist or reveal, it feels like a cheap writing tactic to me.

I don't get the feeling that AoT's author doesn't know what he's doing. I do get the feeling that he's deliberately drawn things out further from his initial plans since popularity exploded, which is okay.

Well yeah I understand that. It's just like you said though, it doesn't really apply to AoT . He's not stalling anything out, the story has consistently moved forward, with every reveal just adding to the momentum. It's not like Lost where it meanders around for ages just asking questions and never providing any answers, we're getting answers but those answers open up the story more because we're looking at everything that came before with new information.

I'll quote myself here..Posted this a while back, still think Zeke is Grishas brother. Also I'd have to go back and look at what Annies dad looks like but pretty sure he's dead...he was likely consumed by Annie after she got injected, so that she could become a shifter. That or she had to consume her mom or something...or maybe her dad already consumed her mom.

forhorglingrads posted:

This is a stretch, but I think Monkey Trouble may be related to Grisha Jaeger, poissbly his brother. Glasses are and looks are pretty similar. Also, we know Grisha was a shifter, since Eren couldn't become one without consuming Grisha. We don't know where Grisha came from initially.

We might learn something from Keith Shadis, the instructor of the 104th squad and former leader of the Survey Corps. Definitely interesting that Eren was able to piece together the memories and realize who that was.

edit: yeah went back and looked...from what it seems like Annies father is still alive (no relation to Zeke), but she had to consume someone, maybe her mom, maybe someone else, but it was someone close to her probably. Or her dad is simply apologizing for the fact that Annie is going to be a warrior.

I've seen a couple of spoiler panels, Bertie loses an ear and gets a haircut and then he apparently is kicking Mikaaa right in the head pretty drat hard also some kind of skinny, huge-rear end mushroom-cloudy thing in the middle of the city, I would get it has to do with Bertholdt.

Bertolt owns. I hope Hange really is dead because it's about time someone important dies (her soldiers don't count). I totally knew Reiner was alive, and I like that we're understanding more just about how crazy a Shifter's physiology can be.

The heck? This chapter owned. Every page had me more and more excited. Armin demanding negotiation in the middle of battle was the most badass thing. And then his normal "holy poo poo, Armin is cold as gently caress" ploy totally did not work because Bertolt has finally found himself. The series iconic antagonist is finally beginning to live up to his image. He's always been in Reiner's shadow, but now he's got to rely on himself.

That page where he says "Oh no, you're not devils. None of you has done anything wrong. It's just that you all have to die. There's nothing you can do now," was perfect. Armin asked a cogent, emotional question, and Bertolt gave an incredibly disturbing answer... and Mikasa's shadow appeared behind him.

That was all cool as gently caress to me, and it's exactly why I'm interested in this story.

Like I get it. You want to get to the basement. We all want to understand what's actually going on here. Me too, because if it's dumb it'll retroactively make a whole bunch of this seem really lame. But gently caress that, there's no point in worrying about it now. You have to appreciate these emotional character moments as they come, and not just worry about the straightforward tactical events in the battle, or the larger plot, or whatever else it is that's making you unreasonably impatient.

Just relax and enjoy the awesome poo poo that is there.

Agreed, do not know why he is complaining at all. Fantastic chapter

It's also weird seeing Bert act so strangely assertive. His words were so cold and devoid of any emotion at all, as if he was just stating a fact, as if he felt nothing for the people he was killing which was definitely not the case before

I agree about the chapter being disappointing; pretty much nothing new happening other than revealing to the reader that Bertholdt has changed. The last chapter ended with Bertholt approaching in the barrel (with the implication he would turn into a titan upon arrival) and this chapter ended with him finally turning into his titan.

Regarding Armin, his plan was to try and shake up Bertholt by talking about Annie, allowing someone else (like Mikasa) to kill him. He wasn't earnestly trying to just talk it out and understand Bertholt or something, it was a pretty cynical move and only failed because of Bertholt's sudden change in attitude.

It's not about wanting to get to the basement. It's the fact that what transpired in this chapter should have taken far fewer pages than it did.
