Then the strategy was lower-intensity faffing about rather than actual war.

I feel like it's gotten even worse. The idea of a republican candidate today saying that Islam is the religion of peace is laughable.

W. Bush is an odd bird. He did indeed pay lip service to respecting Islam and Muslims in the wake of 9/11, but that of course never stopped him from surrounding himself entirely with neocons who thought of the Muslim world as a fun, bloody game of Risk. Which led to the odd internal paradigm for wingnuts circa 2004 that Bush Is Great President But Also Bush Terrible About Bombin' Them Muslims.![]() Dr Cheeto posted:I feel like it's gotten even worse. The idea of a republican candidate today saying that Islam is the religion of peace is laughable. They don't really even try for the compassionate conservatism bullshit anymore. Before, in the case of a situation like the Syrian refugee crisis, various wingnut hacks and flacks would put out statements saying that we only want peaceful refugees, and by the way Muslims are somewhat inclined to not be peaceful. Nowadays? Christians only dammit.

Ben Garrison posted:They were convicted, but then Big Guv wanted a harsher sentence. A federal judge imposed the maximum sentence, thus violating the ‘double jeopardy’ clause in the Constitution. Garrison has to be intentionally stupid. The Hammonds were not tried twice for the same crime. There was only one trial which convicted them of arson. No violation of double jeopardy. The problem was with the sentencing. In this case a sympathetic judge who had nothing to lose as it was his last case ever IGNORED the federal MINIMUM sentencing laws on arson and gave the Hammonds illegally short sentences. The feds appealed and the appeals court imposed the minimum sentence of 5 years. That's it. A case can be made that the 5 year minimum is too harsh but that's a matter for congress and they prefer to look though on crime rather than allow judges discretion in sentencing. Hell, the KKK have written letters touting how his campaign really speaks to their values of "we hate anyone darker than beige". Cruz proves that nearly destroying the government will bring more support from them. Please go and chug a barrel of Flint water. McCoy and Gorrell can join if they want. I agree, Payne. The EPA needs to have more funds, more personnel, more means, and more powers so that they could effectively monitor both the global issues and the local issues.
