I'm basically following this workout plan but I'm wondering if there is anything I should add or change. Glaring weaknesses, that kind of stuff. Also I was wondering if people could share their workout plans for fencing (historical or olympic).

Futurism was an art movement where dudes were all 'CARS ARE COOL AND THE PAST IS FOR CHUMPS. LET'S DRAW SOME CARS.'
We start Monday practice with:
* 5min plank, a mix of: standard, forearm, and sides. Can split up if needed, we usually do 2x2:30, but goal is to get everyone to 5min straight.
* 2min reverse plank, with ~30sec of each leg extended to the side. Started at 1min and have been working up.
* 2min broken table, with ~30sec of each leg extended forward.
* 5min wall sit. Working up to 5min straight, we started at 5x1min, now usually something like 2:30-1:30-1.

Wednesday starts with an active warmup, depending on how many people are there. Sometimes it's low-key like some coordination exercises with beanbags, sometimes traditional warmup stuff, and sometimes it's rousing games of cone game.

On Saturdays I go to a boot camp run at the club, focused pretty heavily on plyometrics, core, and legs. There's a few dozen stations we cycle through; only one is arm-only (pull ups), a few with dumb bells working the whole body, lots of squats, push-ups, lunges etc. I could try to remember a big list of the stations if you want.

On my own, I do a lot of biking when the weather's cooperating. I'm also trying to get into the habit of a daily push up and squat regime.

Do you know how to clean & snatch?.
Most strength plans wont combine upper & lower body. and it also seems weird having both straight bench press and incline bench.
I would also add more shoulder stuff and forget the lat/bicep stuff.

Since you have access to a barbell, I would consider just following a 'Starting Strength' program.
http://startingstrength.com/

Finally, you should add some interval work on top. Just a simple tabata cycle after the strength part will carry you a long way. (Row, cycle, run, choose your poison).

I decided to do starting strength instead. I actually forgot it existed, and I'll do this until I get a baseline of body mechanics. Thanks for reminding me!

I noticed EHMS uploaded some videos to their youtube from the event https://www.youtube.com/user/EHMSRy

I just started doing HEMA and historical fencing and it's just so awesome. I'm in that honeymoon period where you get super into something and it's all you can think about.

What kind of creative bags do you guys use for transporting your gear? Swords are so long it's been a pain to find a good bag that'd fit a longword or a sidesword and hopefully a mask and gloves and stuff and hopefully work as a backbag too. I guess I could use separate bags for the swords. I've been eyeing something like maybe a bag for skis or a snowboard or something.

Hard golf travel cases work quite well.

Hard-sided golf cases are the bomb, especially if you have to travel by air to a venue. Nothing worse than getting your bag and finding all your blades are bent backwards because they got stacked funny on the plane.

PVC electrical conduit is cheap and good for protecting blades if you can't get a hard case. It doesn't look that flash but you can also get anodised aluminium tube for a few dollars more - you might need to stick a bit of something soft in the end (I use an inch or so of hose pipe) to stop the tips from rattling around inside.

Thanks for the suggestions guys and those pictures own bones.

I ended up getting a gunbag. It's pretty great and just what I needed but I don't think it'll fit a longsword. PVC pipe will make a great ghetto-scabbard

I thought bruised nipples and pits of elbow are a common thing in olympic fencing.

You can't scream though, so it still loses to kendo.

fencing is painful if it doesn't involve americans, who wear plastic hand-armor to fight with rapiers and apologize to me for hitting me

Crazy Achmed
Mar 13, 2001

I don't know if it's quite as manly as American football, you don't get to wear tight spandex and mad Max style shoulder pads or hug other manly men very much. But the knee socks are very comfortable.

Fencing is paintball/laser tag for swords. I haven't tried kendo but it honestly doesn't look like it hurts all that much? Unless something goes wrong, of course.

Or maybe badminton, only the shuttlecock is stuck to your racquet, and instead of wanting it to fall to the ground in your opponent's court, you want to drive it straight through the heart of your enemy

Be careful with those masks. They're comfortable but have a tendency to cave. My teacher used to use one until we replaced it with a PBT mask. He would have marks on his face constantly.

I just got this 1600N PBT mask. Don't really have anything to compare it to but it sure feels sturdy enough to actually take a warhammer to the face without caving in....

Tendency to cave, you say? No, I can't possibly see this one caving in. :v:

The way you tell it makes it sound like your teacher would just pop the dent out and get back to getting sworded in the face. I'm pretty sure a bad dent doesn't just buff out, it's going to collapse in the same place next time it's hit. Wiggling wire back and forth is the easiest way to break it, after all.

He says he still prefers it over his new one because of how lightweight and comfortable it was.

Leon Paul update: They want me to pay another £42 for shipping the new, unfucked shell. Also they can't figure out what sort of extra padding goes on their HEMA mask.

I've been using LP masks for a few years now, and using anything more traditionally padded is practically claustrophobic

Yeah, get a refund, that's bullshit. Nothing I've ever bought from Leon Paul has been good quality, come to think of it, except for a really nice foil grip that I think they don't make anymore :( I've got a glove from them that had the stitching go within a year of light use, which is sad because the design and feel of it was otherwise quite good.

[Edit] just tell them they should be paying for shipping because it's their fuckup, not yours. Maybe their customer support will see sense.

Holy poo poo that is pretty terrifying. It should take an unbelievable amount of force to cause a cave in like that, unless the mask was defective. I definitely wouldn't pay the shipping fee, just tell them it's a refund or nothing.

If I did HEMA then I wouldn't go for something like Leon Paul anyways. Their new design are all about sleek designs and light weight, which is fine for sport fencing but not for HEMA.

Siivola
Dec 23, 2012

This model is supposed to be ~20% stronger~, and it really is noticeably heavier than LP's regular contour-fit coaching mask. Strong enough for HEMA, but not strong enough for DHL! :v:

Yeah, Leon Paul has a whole section on their website for HEMA gear now. I haven't heard many good things about their stuff though hth.

Siivola
Dec 23, 2012

Most (if not all) of their HEMA stuff's made in collaboration with SPES, but is more expensive because it's pretty overbuilt and comes with a Leon Paul tag. So people just buy SPES and nobody writes about the LP gear. :v: I faintly recall hearing their pants are all right? On the other hand, the only negative I've heard is that LP's customer service is a pain in the rear end, but that I can 100% corroborate.

No but seriously, they've reached "no actually this is against the law I have rights" levels of pain in the rear end. I'm hoping I'm done with this poo poo tomorrow and can post a full report.

Crazy Achmed
Mar 13, 2001

Was the packaging damaged? Given the force you'd have to apply to make a dent like that, I'd be looking for a forklift driver or similar as the culprit.

Siivola
Dec 23, 2012

Yeah, the cardboard box was pretty beat up. It was probably left between a door or had something fall on it, maybe.

Anyhow, managed to convince LP that no, I'm not going to pay for the replacement, and yes, they really do need to include the high-impact space age padding featured in the product description. All's well that ends well. :toot: All I need now is a gorget and a good pair of gauntlets and I'm good to– Oh wait, and a plate for the back of my head... And knee and elbow pads. And shin guards. Aaaand I guess a longsword.

Back in April I got on the waiting list at Danelli for a replica of this sword from my copy of Norman's book on rapiers.

It arrived today and is drop-dead gorgeous, along with handling better than anything I've ever held.
