For how adorable Cube is I'm still a bit disturbed by the nature of his healing ability: "Hyper-Speed Surgical Healing." The animation agrees with the description: A bunch of stainless steel instruments popping out from under his hat and flicking around so fast that they just look like a flashing, metallic blur.

Darth probably saw Cube try to use that thing on Kato's injuries and was horrified into dedicating the rest of his life to developing medical robots that do their job a bit more elegantly.

Naw. You're supposed to use the arcade cabinet.

OD-10 is probably my favorite of the chapter bosses, just because of how much of a payoff it is. You've been spending the whole chapter avoiding insta-death obstacles, so it's nice to finally fight back with a giant arsenal. It might not be especially challenging, but it sure is cathartic.

You can only jack in the Captain Square cabinet and it's the only possible in-game explanation for where Cube gets all of these abilities. Eevee hasn't shown off Cube's Equip or Status screen because you cannot access them in this chapter (to add to the whole 'Cube is for being robot, not for fighting!' angle of the chapter.)

If the Behemoth didn't have insta-kill powers Cube could have completely destroyed it.

Pretty surprised that Darth actually had serious character development, dude's already a badass for being able to wreck a Behemoth and walk away to have a cup of coffee.

One thing I just discovered, now going through the Sci-Fi chapter, is that if you beat Captain Square on the first try in the break room, the ending music will play in the break room during the couple lines of Kirk expressing his disbelief, before switching back as he shoves you aside to reclaim his high score. It's a nice touch, and it's the only time you can hear it with the same filter that the battle music gets during that scene.

Yeah, the crew eval really ties this whole thing together. But for all that, even with tensions running that high, it didn't seem like this kind of disaster awaited them.

Though it could just be some extreme misdiagnosis on the crew's part, assuming every failure was due to sabotage when in fact they were all just really poo poo at maintenance.

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

I also can't help but think it's also partly the Captain's fault, or least the computer assumes so.

Hol gives up completely on the crew, and judging by how long it took for the crew to spot the impostor, they never really had any sort of rapport going on, so he's not providing any kind of leadership or conflict resolution given the messy break up/hook up and the lingering bad feelings.

So Mother computer assesses that Hol's the most destabilizing element, and gases him (given it's clear he was dead for at least a while before the events of the game), makes a sweep to see if it can do what Hol can't with the crew, and then decide to eliminate everyone.

I'd say the absolute latest that Hol could have been alive was the break room. Nobody seemed to think it unusual that he communicated via viewscreen from his quarters that are literally right across the hall, so one can assume he made a habit of staying in his room.

EDIT: Oh, hey, one thing that was overlooked, unless I just completely hosed up reading the LP, was that after inputting the password you can read Kirk's diary like everyone else's.

Kirk posted:

Personal Diary
Month X, Day X

The agenda for the upcoming motor show has been decided.

Once we get to Earth, I'm headed straight for Detroit.

But after that I need to think about my vacation schedule.

After all, I'll be alone with Rachel.

I have to work out a good plan.

Guy was Tom Paris years before Voyager.

EDIT2: Also, not sure how I didn't notice this, but Corporal Darth's yellow outfit and red beret are reminiscent of Rolento, one of the bosses from Final Fight, a game that Live-A-Live's composer, Yoko Shimomura, worked on when she worked for Capcom. Might be a coincidence, but it's interesting to consider that the team may have included a nod to the composer's work for an entirely different company.

EDIT3: Okay, last thing. Going to the terminal room when Darth calls leads to you finding him already inside. He says "So you came here too? I was thinking of a full frontal assault, myself. We don't have time to think about this!" (slightly paraphrased) When you leave the room, you get a short scene of the Behemoth stomping around just past the doorway to the north, before heading into that hall. Naturally, this encourages you to take the long way to the break room.

EDIT4: I lied, walking around without beelining for Captain Square prompts Darth to call and give you a hint, asking if you can find something unnecessary, but still somehow linked to the mother computer. It's a solid hint, giving you a clue without completely giving away the answer. Seriously this chapter has cases set up for everything.

I always got the impression that the captain was alive for a good half of the chapter. He gave normal but distant responses to the crew for most of his conversations including the one about Kirk's death, then after the Behemoth gets loose the AI replays the Kirk conversation. At least I assume he was still alive when Kirk died, unless the captain made it a habit to talk about burials so often the AI could just grab any random soundbite.

Update 10: Unusual hiring practices.

Completing the Kung Fu chapter next went completely uncontested, so let’s jump right into it.

A style of Kung Fu generations old is about to fade away, forever…

Yes… Yes, this will work. (This chapter was done by inhesto during the old LP, and their best translation for the original Xin Shan Quan was “Soul of the Mountain Kung Fu”. Any and all Chinese to English translations in these updates are courtesy of them.)

Oh my yes. :allears: Drammatica: The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura was a compilation album released in 2008, and the long-titled “The Bird Flies in the Sky, The Fish Swims in the River” was one of two tracks from Live-A-Live to be recreated for it.

Oh, right. Enough about this scenario’s music; let’s see the Master train.

When proper focus is applied, however, even the most placid of water can become destructive!

Harden both body and mind, and you will know no equal, in heaven or on earth.

Ha!

It is as I expected…

Before my time comes to an end, I must entrust to one of strong body, and of strong mind… My WuTang!

-------

(No music.)

Our mission is simple. The WuTang Master must find some pupils to train.

To prepare for the task ahead, we raid all the jars and cupboards in his little dojo.

We get a healthy selection of healing items, as well as one useful piece of equipment. +20 speed is pretty excellent. (Also note that our cursor is a panda. :3: )

Apparently part of the WuTang secret is to take everything that’s not nailed down and on fire.

The summit is where we just saw the Master training; it gives me serious Mount Ordeals vibes.

...Man, ancient China had a lot of forests. And giant pillars of stone.

The three locations further down Mount Da Zhi can be visited in any order, but I’d recommend going to the Bamboo Forest first.

Bandits and tigers in the same forest? Rough neighbourhood.

Not that the WuTang Master has anything to fear, of course.

The Master has seven techniques in his arsenal, one of which is a counter. LaoHuZhiWu (“Old Fox Dance”) is definitely a fan favourite, inflicting the ailments that stop hand techs and foot techs/movement very reliably. It scales with IQ, unlike the rest of his moves.

Oh, and a sidenote: The Master does not gain experience. He’s old and reaching his limits, after all.

Five of the plants in the forest are key items, while the rest are a selection of restoratives. We’ll need the former very soon.

Though first, we may need to deal with whatever that is.

(Music stops.)

You really shoulda known better, gramps! Hand over all yer cash, an’ make it snappy!

Well, we can hand it over… But this bandit will just run off if we do. So instead we’ll say I’m broke.

What’d you say!?

Hah, you trying to shoot for sympathy just ‘cuz you’re older’n some of the trees here?

Yes, it is indeed obvious that we have a Zaki situation going on here.

So after we cripple the begeezus out of this woman, let’s look at a few of the Master’s other moves.

Squirrel Kick is the only one of the non-counter techs that can be used when you aren’t right up next to an opponent, and it has a chance to stun. Another keeper.

Lion Hand has knockback, which we already know is great for interrupting things and avoiding counterattacks. And with that little demonstration, the bandit has been shown swift justice.

My, but you should be ashamed of yourself, little one. However, your technique shows promise… Why not learn Kung Fu and give yourself a new lease on life?

But… you still… Argh, damnit, I’m pissed! Alright, gramps, I’m game! I’ll learn from you. But don’t expect any loyalty or anything like that!!

Heheheh… If you say so, little one.

Don’t call me that!!

Alright, alright. Don’t be so angry. Smiles suit you better.

Hmph! You talk too much, gramps. Come on, let’s get out of here.

Li became a pupil!

And just like that, we have one of the Master’s students all ready to go. I could fight tigers to give Li some experience, but I actually want to avoid levelling up for the time being.

We can’t go anywhere beyond the tiger-filled forest, so let’s return to the main intersection.

Alright, next stop on our whirlwind tour.

Wong Town has seen better days. Let’s see if we can’t help right a few Wongs. Or get a few Wongs upright, rather.

Urrgh…

There are six people lying around, and you can use the healing plants gathered from the forest to cure their plague.

As the game will handily tell you here.

The sixth person is actually just hungry. You can give them a Meat Bun, but you’ll get no reward. The actual sick people will cough up some more equipment and healing buns.

Aside from this lady, who has to be cured to progress. So let’s use the last of our healing plants, and…

Ooohhh… I think… I’ll be alright… Aren’t you the…

You must be the Master. Thank you. That was my grandson… He’s a nice boy, but he’s been acting strange these days…

Hmm… Perhaps we should investigate.

Just looking, buddy. For now.

(Music stops.)

Okay…

What, is this it? You ain’t gonna make a profit stealin’ from the poor!

...

Well, go on! Get lost!

...

What’d you say!?

I-it’s wrong! I c-c-c-can’t do it anymore! You even made me m-mug my g-g-grandma!

... I’ll give you one more chance. Apologize!

N-no! I-I don’t want to be a loser…!!

Haha… Yeah, no.

‘scuse me, coming through.

You believe yourself to be stronger than this boy, is that correct?

... Well, duh!

I beg to differ. You are much weaker than he.

The hell you talkin’ about?

Power comes not only from the body. In my eyes, the boy has much strength, indeed.

Yer pullin’ my leg, old man! I could crush the kid like a bug if I wanted!

You still don’t get it, do you?

Okay, so. These guys.

These guys are chumps.

Like, seriously. They are one of the few enemies that can trigger the Master’s counterattack, because FushaNoSha (“To strike without striking”) only works against ranged moves.

They drop more equipment that isn’t as good as what the Master starts with. :v:

(Music stops.)

I-I remember now! This old guy! He’s…

Wha…!? F-f-forgive meee!!

I-I… Even though I stole… oh!

Thank you, young man. Remember that power doesn’t just come from the body.

W-wait, sir!

Hmm… If we remain silent, we get this line:

Yeah, I guess you’re right… A “spindly little pile of bones” like could never study under the famous Master…

And the boy would run off. However, it would just force us to recruit him later, so… Sorry, but…

!

Why worry? You have already bested them.

Master…!

And this here is where the conversation would continue from if we had kept quiet. Yuan would have been waiting for us further up the mountain, moving up all the way to block the dojo’s door if he’s continually refused.

Master…!

I admire your courage… I thought, perhaps, that you could become stronger without my aid. Your mind is already fierce, and your will to become strong is great. That is real power.

Y-yeah!

I haven’t asked your name yet.

Oh… it’s Yuan… Yuan Jou. N-nice to meet you, Master!

Yuan became a pupil!

Okay, let’s see if we can go three for three.

Hmm…

(Music stops.)

I believe we may have found the cause of this dilemma.

The big fella’s got some moves. Also, I’m glad not all the slapstick is confined to the Caveman chapter.

(Music stops.)

B-but I’m broke…

Oh, Master! This guy’s welching on his meal! I want him punished!

Now, we can agree to beat him up, or we can pay for his meal. It makes absolutely no difference beyond getting to curbstomp a fat guy.

Mmph… Nnn… N-nooooooooo!!

There are more moves I need to show off though. Bai Li Dao Yi Bu Jiao (“Fifty miles begins with a single step”) often stuns the enemy; perhaps it’s more reliable than Squirrel Kick?

Long Hu Liang PoWan ("Together, the Dragon and Tiger shatter your wrist") lowers a whole bunch of the enemy’s stats when it hits. That leaves us with only one more of the Master’s techs to demonstrate, and that will come next update.

(Music stops.)

Because today’s lesson in pain is over.

Mmmph… Y-you’re old… but strong…

Well, that’s settled! You!! Give your thanks to the Master!!

Ah yes, good ol’-fashioned long pork. Or maybe round pork, in this case.

I… I’m not exactly smart, so nobody would hire me… But because I’m so big, I get hungrier than most people.

You know… You ought to be proud of your body.

Huh? B-but people make fun of me because I’m fat. Why should I be… proud of it?

...

Despite your weight, you are agile. I’m very impressed!

That’s… probably because I have to run away so often…

If you come study under me, you can eat whatever you want. You will need to do some exercise, of course.

I don’t care what I have to do, show me the food!!

What is your name?

Sammo! Sammo Hakka! Now let me at that fooooood!!

Sammo became a pupil!

And with that, we have a full party and the Master has a good selection of pupils to train… all of them thieves, in one way or another.

It’s hard to gather the materials, and it requires a lot of patience to cook.

Aside from a little flavour text and some random items from the townsfolk, there’s nothing more to do here.

So next time we’ll take a look at how the WuTang master train his pupils… However!

:ducksiren: There’s an important vote to be made! :ducksiren:

You see, the Master’s power can only truly be passed on to one of these three youths. And it’s up to you folks to decide which of them will become the next WuTang Master!

So let’s take a better look at the candidates…

Li Kuugo

Li will develop into a good all-round combatant with high speed, though her IQ takes a little longer to rise. She starts with and also learns some strong physical techniques, some of which have better range than the old Master’s moves. Certainly a solid selection.

Yuan Jou

Juan is the very definition of a late bloomer. His basic moves and stats are lousy, but his stat growths and later-learned techs are fantastic once he puts them to use. He will have much, much higher IQ than either of the other students, but his HP will always be somewhat on the low side. Definitely more of a ranged attacker.

Sammo Hakku

Sammo is slower than the other pupils and his IQ is awful, but he will have tons of Vitality and about 50% more health than Li at the same level. He learns one of only two techs that allow the player to cause the ‘Drunk’ status effect, which disables all techs except the target’s ‘basic’ attack. (So for players, whichever is first on the list.)

So there you have it! Do you want an all-rounder, a late-blooming glass cannon or a slow tanky character? Please bold your votes!

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."
Li Kuugo because she's great in every possible way.

So, Yoshihide Fujiwara isn't really much to speak of. He worked on the Virtua Fighter manga, and won an award from the same group as Yumi Tamura (the illustrator of Cube's chapter). This won't be the last time the Shogakukan awards will be coming up, though I believe this guy's is the oldest, being from 1984 (Tamura's was 1993). Only other interesting thing is he was the apprentice of Ryoichi Ikegami, who did a bunch of older manga and also Spider-Man: The Manga. Okay, I promise, regardless of which chapter comes next after this, the artist will be actually interesting.

Also, there's only one reference I can clearly identify, and it might be a slight stretch, but there's too many hints to ignore. The cast for this chapter, I believe, is a light allegory to the characters from Journey to the West, one of the most significant works of East Asian literature. I'll be using their Japanese names*, as there are some connections there, as well. Li Kuugo is boastful, impulsive, agile, and clearly the best character, like Son Goku (also, Goku, Kuugo). Yuan Jou is respectful of the Master and not given to outbursts like the other two, which were defining traits of Sha Gojyo (Also, that last syllable there could be transliterated as "Jou" instead of "Jyo", the same characters are used in this instance). Sammo Hakka is gluttonous and indulgent, like Cho Hakkai (also, Hakka, Hakkai). Naturally, the Master is then meant to be the wise Genjo Sanzo, guiding his three companions to enlightenment.

*Specifically, I'm using the spellings from the manga/anime Gensomaden Saiyuki, because I find them to be the most readable and also Saiyuki owns.

#acolyte GM of 2014

Li Kuugo For sure

EponymousMrYar
Jan 4, 2015

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
This is my favorite chapter. In the theme of LiveALive it does a lot with surprisingly little.

Anyway, Combat stuff.
This Chapter's Lesson is that Techniques can be based off of any Stat, not just ATK. All of the Master's techniques work off of a different stat shown in their tooltip.
Long Hu Liang PoWan is based off of Power,
Bai Li Dao Yi Bu Jiao is based off of Health/Vit,
Lion Hand is based off of 'luck' (it's either a hidden stat or mistranslated, the former wouldn't surprise me in this game especially since it's been consistent through both versions,)
The Tech we haven't seen is based on Speed,
Squirrel Kick also goes off Speed,
and LaoHuZhiWu is IQ.
FushaNoSha requires 'all' stats, but it's pretty much just a counter tech.

Also this chapter combines it's Character and Chapter gimmicks into one with the whole Inheritance thing. Eevee will show that off next update but it's important to have this choice now, it makes things a lot easier.

I always choose Li Kuugo because as you see above, Speed has the most techs based off of it and Li has the highest speed. She's actually the second fastest character in the game. Most of her personal techs are also based off of it. Also the game knows she's the only female main character candidate in the entire game. It will come up again if she gets voted successor. :ssh:
Yuan is sort of the 'default' inheritor although it's interesting how they accomplished that. He's got the Highest IQ and his personal techniques are the most interesting being that they're based around elemental damage. He's got a Fire and Blizzard punch at the moment IIRC.
Sammo is big and slow. He has a lot of HP and Vit but most of his techniques have a charge time on top of him being quite slow, so I've never gone with him. He does hit pretty hard.

Also all three are equally viable thanks to a very special thing later. It's also part of why this is my favorite chapter. :allears:

Throwing in another vote for Li. Does the game really make you pick between them with only a vignette each to go off? I only know who I want because anime kids and anime gluttons are tiring.
Eevee's kind of spoiling it but my first time through I didn't know I was making a choice before that choice happened. Having seen a lot of this sort of genre though since then I really should have known the choice was happening when it does.
Assuming limited foreknowledge yes this is all you have to go off of, since the only other way to know what they can do/how they work is to go and kill a tiger or two with them. Even if you try to wait out the fights to see what they can do all of the Martial Arts technique's this chapter serve as counters, so they'll only get one hit in before you obliterate them.

Pro is an amazing name!
I took screenshots of all the movelists, and yeah a number of them aren't in kanji. I think what the issue was was that the moves that weren't translated in the English version (i.e. "Sha no Sha") were all written in kanji in the original version. That is to say, the ones I had no hope of reading didn't need a translation anyway.

Anyways, here's the movelists. I linked them because maybe spoilers?

Yeesh, I forgot that all of Sammo's moves had no kanji, so I was actually 100% guessing off of the pinyin in his case.

e: vvv Fun fact, Sammo Hung trained in the same opera school as Jackie Chan (and a few other of their contemporaries). He was actually pretty skinny back in the day, but injured his leg and gained quite a bit of weight while healing. While his weight never recovered, thankfully he also never lost his acrobatic talent.

Sammo Hung Hakko. And dammit now I'm watching clips of his fight scenes on YouTube again.

It's okay if you have any questions.

For those who aren't familiar, Sammo Hung.

Where we're going, we won't need eyes to Select Warp.
Sammo! If only because I've never seen anyone take him.

Yuan Jou. Li's also a good choice, but she was the choice last time. And Sammo seems to be the least deserving choice.
