Up until 2010 we also had 5 Radioshacks in a town of 60k, with one that sold nothing but Cellphones and one who actually had really cool poo poo from the 1993 catalog still on the shelves. The other three sold batteries, cheap RC toys and lightbulbs. The cellphone one tanked the moment we got a Best Buy. The one that had all the old poo poo stayed open the longest because the franchise owner also started a comic shop/lovely pizzareia in half of the building that catered mostly to Warhammer and Magic players. Those parts just took over the Radioshack half slowly until he was let out of his franchise deal.

RadioShack's obsession with selling cell phones and batteries just baffles me. Oldschool RS could've easily capitalized on the maker trends from a couple years back and made tons of money; sell Raspberry Pi and LEDs to arduino buffs who don't want to wait 2-5 days for shipping.

I heard someone who ran a DQ one time say that the company no longer allowed new dessert-only franchises. You had to be a DQ Brazier-styled store. I believe they said the only reason they were allowed to run their store as a frozen only for so long was that they were grandfathered in before the policy changed. Granted, that was years ago, though, and the policies might have since changed.

They had arduino kits at the last radio shack I went into.

There's really no money in any of that poo poo though. Anyone with an actual project they want to do will have a specific parts list. Unless the store has everything you need in stock, it is just cheaper and easier to order it all online and wait the 1 or 2 days. If schools are buying stuff they aren't doing it at the mall.

Mostly, though, arduino is a lot of startup companies hyping for venture capital and/or kickstarter money because Obama mentioned it in a speech once. People aren't really running out in droves to learn a dumb way how to make an led blink on and off with a lovely microcontroller.

Cell phones and accessories and contracts are pure gravy that is why radio shack is big on it, the cell phone area is huge at wal-mart or best buy, there are cell phone kiosks everywhere in the mall.

Cell phone bullshit is a 100 trillion dollar a week industry, that is why 99% of a shopping malls floor space is dedicated to it.

Ubisoft's open world machine is starting to break down, though, and they don't really have anything to lean on when it does. They have strong brands they could be pushing further ahead to keep going with when Assassin's Creed inevitably crashes, but rather than elevate a completely different product for that--Rayman, Might and Magic, Prince of Persia, just as quick examples--they seem to be hedging their bets on Farcry and Watch_Dogs, the properties rear end Creed is most likely to take down with it.

You're probably still paying for it.

Zunes were alright but the problem was everyone was trying to create a "cool brand" to compete with Apple on "brand coolness" instead of making better devices cheaper.

What they need to do is just buy a "cool" company and run it from the shadows like how the vanity headphone industry works.

So with all this talk technically superior but not as cool media players and tacky headphones and companies circling the drain, what's up with Creative Labs?

Do people still put SoundBlaster Live cards in their computers?

On the other hand the remaining Radio Shacks are probably freaking the gently caress out right now - corporate shoved the phone repair service down managers' throats so hard that it's now an important part of their business (despite the fact that they buy the cheapest, shittiest replacement parts out there).

They did start carrying a fairly decent assortment of Arduino/Beaglebone/RPI/LittleBits stuff but they literally didn't advertise it at all, and at least in my store they had us set up that section in the Senior Citizens aisle (home phones, alarm clocks, etc.) so most people coming in didn't even know we had them.

One time I was bored and we had an extra gondola display right at the entrance, so I made up a nice display for all that poo poo. We were #1 in sales in the district that week.
The following Monday my district manager came in, gave me a bunch of poo poo for going off-plan and made me take it down. Our sales dropped.

That was right about the time I started telling people that they should just go down the street to Microcenter and get those button-cell batteries for $0.49 instead of $5.99 (yes that's actually what we charged for a single battery).

All the Radio Shacks in Canada got bought out and replaced by The Source which was a Circuit City brand. When they went under Bell bought all the stores. Shopping there reminds me of what it's like to buy something at an airport. Selection is limited and overpriced.

Square-Enix makes an assload of money off Final Fantasy XIV, the new Tomb Raider and Just Cause are selling very well, and of course any game with the words Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest they make will automatically sell a million copies, so I don't think it's going to be them.

Yeah, Square Enix has a license to print money with their RPG franchises, they're really in no place to be worried. Plus their porting of their older games to mobile platforms has been a really solid side bet for them

Yep, and there is a lot more competition than there used to be. You can't afford to be the company that straight up increases your prices to $75 while everyone else sticks to the $40-$55 mark. Instead companies find other ways to squeeze money out via DLC/expansions/subscriptions/etc.
