Booblord Zagats posted:Yeah, Square Enix has a license to print money with their RPG franchises, they're really in no place to be worried. Plus their porting of their older games to mobile platforms has been a really solid side bet for them Actually, their big RPG releases are having the most trouble. Their core Japanese development team--so Final Fantasy, primarily--has been struggling to update its product for an audience that it thinks has moved on. Nobody buys JRPGs on consoles anymore. Only its audience quite clearly hasn't moved on, because their ports onto mobile and stuff like Record Keeper make bank, and people eat up more classic JRPG stuff like Bravely Default that comes out on handhelds. JRPGs haven't been popular on consoles in recent years because they haven't been MADE on consoles in recent years. If we draw the line for 'modern consoles' at the PS3/360/Wii generation onwards, the only big JRPGs that have been made are Monolith's Xenoblade games, the Final Fantasy XIII series, and that new Tales Of game that came out this year. The only one of those that was poorly-received was FFXIII, so it's more likely because the FFXIII series is poo poo than anything about the genre. S-E's mobile/handheld titles are making good money, and Eidos is making good money despite some missteps, so S-E as a whole is healthy. But they've got what Sega used to have going, where their biggest franchise is so core to their brand that it failing looks like them failing. So we see them taking a decade to make a game that's barely Final Fantasy, and we see them desperately making a remake of their most popular title to please somebody while misunderstanding the reason many people want it, and we just assume they're circling the drain. Because it doesn't really occur to us that they're also the guys profiting from Just Cause, Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.

Agreed, but unlike Sega, SE seems to listen to fan feedback. FFXIV is basically the MMO turnaround success story (for those who've never heard of it, FFXIV 1.0 was an absolute trainwreck and threatened to gouge the company out from the inside, but SE did a complete overhaul and 2.0 was re-released to almost universal acclaim and is robustly competing with World of Warcraft for subscription numbers). Also FFXV is getting shitloads of hype (deservedly so - IMO it looks incredible), and you can be drat sure that even if the FFVII remake is balls, it will sell millions of copies off the name alone. Their decision to make that remake episodic, while understandable and somewhat justified, is also going to make them a fuckton of money. But yeah, between the XIII trilogy and the abortion that was XIV v1.0, they were in serious danger for a while (didn't the last Hitman game bomb like crazy too?)

Either taxies or uber. The former have done nothing but hurt public perception with being finks, disruptive and raging while the latter has been getting unfair advantages and isn't very sustainable for the drivers. That said I'm sort of rooting on uber since my experience with them have been far better vs taxis and I don't really like the idea of being locked in a box with a dude who took a baseball bat to a bunch of cars and public property because he got mad at competition.

By the end, RS had (and was heavily advertising) a solid selection of Bluetooth speakers and headsets, 3-4 different brands of wearable cameras (including GoPro), a bunch of dumb home automation stuff, video game systems with playable demos, an assortment of DIY stuff, and associates who were essentially told their jobs were on the line if they didn't meet certain sales goals. None of it worked, and none of that is going to work, and relaunching under a brand name that failed so spectacularly is A Bad Idea. Even a fossil like Radio Shack realized there's no money to be made in laptops and TVs, something these guys don't seem to get (from my experience the average profit to Radio Shack off a laptop or TV in the $500+ range was like $10, the same they'd make selling a single cordless phone battery). Unless they can match Amazon prices (which they can't), the new Circuit City is going to be the same thing Radio Shack and Best Buy are: showrooms so people can gently caress around with electronics and then go buy them on Amazon for much less. Also lol if they think that the sales associates they'll be paying under $10/hr will make an effort to learn anything about the large variety of products they'll be carrying. poo poo, even my old District Manager's eyes would glaze over if you tried to ask him why you can't connect a Composite video output to a Component input and have it work, or god forbid the difference between 802.11n and 802.11ac. If you want Radioshack to work, you sell the brand to Home Depot or Lowes as a "upgraded" version of those stores. Push the whole DIY angle, load it up with electronic parts and just make a few extra aisles that look more "futuristic" with parts for electronic projects and high end electronic home improvements like wifi connected house speakers, security cameras with smart phone app control, etc. What you don't wanna do is hire Nick Cannon as an executive and then try to sell lovely cellphones and mp3 players in dying malls across america

Aren't a lot of (all) franchises basically just as predatory and lovely as Quiznos? I've heard the same things about Subway, Five Guys, Chipoltle or whatever other fast food trend is sweeping through mall food courts. You get a "turnkey" business with instant brand recognition and not having to do marketing and whatnot. In exchange, you probably never make any actual money for yourself ever. The scam is to make you think that in 10 years this franchise will be worldwide and you will sell yours for billions and trillions of dollars. They will show you some example of a guy who bought one of the first McDonalds franchises in 1902 for 34 US cents and now he is worth billions. These franchises are designed as a product to sell to people who have saved up a fat nest egg and got the hankerin' to be a restaurant owner but don't really know anything about restaurants or leadership and can't be bothered to learn. That's my thoughts, based on the ex-accountant who owned the Subway I worked at as a kid. He had a very successful career as a business man (CFO of some company) and was sitting on fat stacks of cash, but mid life crisis hit and he put it all into this Subway franchise, and from what I could tell it was all just so he could say "yes miss, I am the owner.. how about a free footlong beef with extra sauce " to every 15 year old classmate of mine that came in. In the year and a half I worked there he managed to piss away just about everything and his wife was filing for divorce. I think he managed to find another chump to buy him out of the franchise, because luckily Jared came along and made Subway a hot franchise to own.

I know an older guy who owned 3 McDonalds' franchises in the area. He bought them and ran them for about 6 years before he gave one to each of his kids. His reasoning being they were irresponsible idiots who would waste the millions he had made, but these things actually created about 300K a year (each) in personal revenue for him while being ran anything close to correctly. So his idiot children couldn't blow their inheritance on a lovely car, a McMansion and some blow and run out of money in 2 years. All three are still open, but all owned by just one of his kids after he bought the other two out, realizing they were idiots who would take way too little for them so they could turn around and waste their money on bullshit while he collects the better part of a million dollars a year on autopilot

Skeleton Ape posted:What I meant was that knowing about products isn't what district managers are hired / paid for, and consequently, they don't. Then that's even more damning evidence towards how terribly Radio Shack ran its corporate side because the 4 DMs I met all started as associates and worked their way up the chain. The specific guy I mentioned managed 3 different stores before he moved up to DM, and was an associate for years before then. So I guess it's lovely practices both ways - promoting internally rather than bringing in people who actually know how to oversee groups of stores, and allowing someone to rise up through the ranks without learning a drat thing about what they're supposed to be selling. DM was probably a bad example in hindsight, but it extends to most of the associates I encountered as well. You don't need to be a certified electronics genius to be able to explain to someone why an AT&T phone won't work on Verizon (I mean I guess they do nowadays, but not back then). The number of times I had to process returns from various employees doing poo poo like selling someone a mini-USB when they needed a micro, or 4-pin phone cable to someone who needed Cat5e was pretty mind-numbing. Hell, I watched my manager literally run through multiple training modules for a couple of new employees, ensuring that even if they wanted to learn, they couldn't.
