Moving and starting school full time, I'm finally in a position to get my own dog (spacious apartment in walking distance of everything, near woods and back roads without much traffic). I'm excited but scared of being solely responsible for something I will love that much.

I'm definitely adopting an older dog. I'm wondering whether I should get two to keep each other company while I'm in class. It's a nice thought, but it seems like two adult dogs could just as easily despise each other.

Either get a pair you know get along, or get one then have a shelter ready to take the 2nd pup back if they don't get along.

Oh drat, that's so obvious. I even pitched pairs of dogs to potential owners when I volunteered at the animal shelter in my last town.

Had to do that with my girlfriend's dog she got a couple weeks ago. Heart breaking experience since the dog was a good dogge that just didn't get along with mine. She's taking a vacation for a week to visit family back home so I'm going to surprise her when she gets back

In the end all you can maximize is the dog population happiness. It doesn't matter which dog you make happy unless one is less adoptable, but it matters a whole lot how happy and relaxed the one dog you can care for is.

Taking the pups to my parents' house this weekend. Will try to get pics of their Schnauzer, Pepper. Gonna visit friend who has a Boston Terrier, Gonzo. Another friend just had to put down his 9 year old great dane so I'm hoping some more happy dogs will cheer him up.
