Reach for the moon!
Latest Update: Episode 21: Terror Is Reality (09/18)

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is an open world survival horror (and comedy) game featuring everyone's favorite good ol' standby, zombies. It was developed and published by Capcom, released worldwide on October 11-14, 2011 for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The game is a re-imagining of Dead Rising 2, with that game's protagonist, Chuck Greene, replaced by Frank West of the first Dead Rising. The entire game is a "What If?" scenario where Frank West covered the Fortune City outbreak, instead of Chuck Greene. As such, the game isn't considered canon within the Dead Rising continuity. It also changes the plot of Dead Rising 2 significantly in regards to the different characters and their motives.

After surviving the zombie outbreak that occurred in Willamette (though now infected with the zombie virus), freelance photojournalist Frank West quickly became a celebrity for exposing the truth behind the outbreak. However, his fame soon vanished due to frequent scandals and controversies. In hopes to regain a place in the spotlight, he accepts an offer from Tyrone "TK" King to appear as a special guest on the controversial pay-per-view zombie-killing show Terror is Reality, taking place in Fortune City, Nevada. As soon as he's getting ready to take home his winnings, however, a new zombie outbreak within the city traps Frank and thousands of people inside. With three days until the military arrives, Frank reads between the lines and spots an opportunity for a mind-blowing story that could bring him back into the public spotlight.

This game is fun as hell!! Moreso than that, it's not too hard to commentate over. I don't do live commentary very often except for live streams because I'm just not that good at formulating solid thoughts while I'm trying to play well; but Dead Rising 2 (and thus OTR) makes it pretty easy because there's a lot to talk about. Additionally, the game has a great sense of humor, a very tight design philosophy, and an excellent art style. It's just fun in general.

For the story, survivors etc, please don't. In terms of fun-rear end ways to kill zombies and things to do around the city, be my guest! Part of the fun of this game is discovering how other people play it. And besides, there's no real reason to spoiler tag "if you combine a knife and a wrench you get a knifewrench".

Sort of! Dead Rising 2: OTR is a big, wide-open game with lots of possibilities and many different ways to play. For the main playthrough, I'm going to be trying to save as many people as I possibly can- however, if there are any survivors that I miss in the main playthrough (which I most definitely will as DR2 has a lot that aren't tied to missions), I'll be sure to mention where to find them and maybe splice in a clip of me doing so.

Now this is how do you a zombie game right. Pure, genocidal, fun.
I still don't like the time limit gimmicks and the fact you can't do everything in one playthrough but the (re-)murder is just too drat satisfying to mind that as anything but a slight flaw.
Plus Frank is a wonderful protagonist I really feel I can identify with.

This is one of the best co-op games I've played. I'm honestly surprised you don't have anyone along for the ride, silent or otherwise.

Unless of course you wouldn't mind having help in later videos? The co-op player running around as chuck would be nice if just for making your job easier. (I am available and love the drat game to death.)

Eh, I do like the game in co-op but I decided to do this one solo because that way I wouldn't have to co-ordinate recording times and could just do it at my leisure. Maybe I'll bring someone along for the sandbox mode videos, though!

I also really like Frank. I like Chuck too, but I don't mind Frank being in his place, that's for sure. :v:

Extra work, I totally get it. (Even though I work from home and am pretty much always available)

Do let me know if you want some sandbox chicanery. I'll take any excuse to play this goofy rear end game.

It's really amazing how many quality of life improvements they crammed into DR2 over the original, and then still managed to re-make the game with Frank. I really enjoy the Dead Rising series and OTR is probably my favorite of the bunch. Looking forward to what goofy weaponry you end up favoring, CJacobs!

I liked this a lot more than the base game, even though they made the survivor AI terrible again.

I especially appreciated that they made Frank West look like you'd actually expect him to.

Shame about DR3 being boring, but at least we've still got the best version of the Dead Rising formula to endlessly replay.

note to Capcom: stop trying to create Everyman protagonists for this series, it doesn't work and drags everything down with it.

I've played the Wii version of DR1 and I played DR2 when it came out, but I never got OtR, so this should be a fun ride.

I remember renting Dead Rising 2 from GameFly (back when I actually used that service in high school). Never got more than a few hours into it, but the base game was definitely a whole different world from the first. Like the first Dead Rising was pretty cartoonish with the custom weapons and Servbot heads, but Dead Rising 2 starts with chainsaw motorcycles.

He looks like Dan Aykroyd and sounds like Michael from GTA 5. It's so weird. He is a frankenstein's monster. A middle-aged frankenstein's monster.

Actually according to Dead Rising: Watchtower, Frank West is officially supposed to be Rob Riggle.

In this game he's got tons of lines for when you put on the silly-rear end clothes, ranging from "HELL YEAH" and "I am liking this!" to "Oh god, I hope nobody sees me" and ":sigh: If I have to...."

Oh yeah, in Dead Rising 1, if you were following the storyline you pretty much had to know the quickest way to locations and just make a straight run for them, no messing about at all, this is why I love sandbox so much in Off the Record because you can spend a lot of time freely exploring the detailed areas and killing zombies at your leisure.

I love the broadsword. Before you get access to recipes and better weapons, it's the best thing you can find because it reliably one-shots zombies. One of the casinos actually has swords and axes put on walls as decoration - that place is a godsend on your first playthrough.

It's not like I've got no worries...
But I'll be fine.
Of course, in Vanilla DR2 that did not matter because the game immediately presents you with the ability to craft The Defiler and you never really need anything else.

They moved some stuff around in OTR to make this not quite as easy to obtain!

Also: Oh my god, finally someone besides myself and my girlfriend have commented on the fact that Frank is just Dan Aykroyd in this game. It's one of the reasons why I love this game so much, because she watched me stream it and was just constantly overjoyed when his big, Dan Aykroyd face was on the screen

Something that is amusing is that Dead Rising 2 had a cross promotion with Playboy Magazine of all things as you could see ingame posters of covers and one of the survivors in the safehouse was a bunny girl, OTR of course removed all the posters and replaced them with Uranus Zone ones and the bunny girl just wears a female waiter outfit now.

Unsurprisingly, Rebecca Chang will continue to be annoying and cause middle-aged sexual tension for the rest of the game.

To fix the audio problems I boosted the volume levels of the cutscenes/other important dialogue manually and left my auto duck settings alone. I don't think changing that would fix the problem since I don't really talk during the cutscenes anyway. Please let me know if this is an ample solution!
