Episode 0 is the first OVA, and everything else is included in the show. Just watch the show.

just watch the show. the ovas are pretty much just proof of concept without any real story established, and the ".5" episodes are just additional material exploring the cultural references in the show and, iirc, the characters commentating over the story

I don't think I'll get good results from posting in Games, so is it okay if I ask for VN recommendations here? I was gifted World End Economica and I thought it was good so now I'm looking to explore more of the medium. I don't have any particular genre in mind, just want to try the "classics". Preferably on Steam, or otherwise easily accessible for a dumb English-speaker.

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni. The VN is great, the anime is garbage.

Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Spiritus Nox

I'd second Kindred Spirits, with some extreme qualifications. It's a yuri thing and generally pretty cute, but there's a student/teacher romance in there that tries really hard to make itself okay but it's just nooooot. I also find the ghost characters to be kind of terrible at times.

Also, it's an eroge, so if you're not down for that be advised. I'd say it's about as explicit as a Christine Love (Analog: A Hate Story, Hate Plus) game with CGs, if you're familiar with those.

Also also, despite being an eroge, all the ero stuff is 8+ hours in, so don't go in looking for instant les-porn either.

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni isn't on Steam (but apparently will be someday), but wikipedia says this and this are prequels. Are they any good?

Thanks for the tip, Seafood. Unfortunately it seems I can't actually buy it. The Witch Hunt website links to mangagamer, but they have removed the game from their catalog. It's not even listed under the 07th Expansion section. I'll email them, maybe it's just a mistake.

Steins;Gate is a good idea that I should have thought of myself and it looks like it's actually easy to buy. Thanks Allarion!

Well, Clannad is a classic and is on steam but i'd just watch the anime of that instead. Fruit of Grisaia is another good one that's on steam.

Hello Vostok!

Thank you for contacting us! We were selling an older version of Umineko on our store for some time, but recently removed it.

That being said, we have partnered with 07th Expansion and Witch Hunt to bring fans a brand-new version of Umienko with an updated translation, the full original soundtrack, and snazzy character artwork! We will be publishing it on our website and on Steam. However, we do not have an estimated release date for the Umineko chapters just yet. We recommend keeping an eye on our project status page for that information as it is released, or our Twitter account for our bi-weekly updates.

If you have any other questions or concerns we can address, please let us know and we'll be more than happy to help!

Higurashi is extremely good. It's my second favorite VN with Umineko being #1. Unfortunately they only have two out of eight chapters up on Steam and the best content is easily the later chapters. The early chapters are still very good but it was kind of obvious in retrospect that the author (Ryukishi07) was still kind of figuring out his style and pacing. They've been doing around two chapters a year so I guess we'll see how it all shakes down. The releases are pretty high quality, especially if you go through the effort to patch in PS3 sprites (the new Steam sprites are kinda eh) and voice acting.

I wouldn't count on Umineko arriving on Steam any time soon unless they are abandoning Higurashi efforts to do so. Which I kind of hope they don't because in the end people could always :filez: it (not that I'm advocating they do so) as a temporary solution whereas Higurashi is in desperate need of a new and updated release for all chapters.

Steins;Gate remains an excellent choice as always of course.

would a rec for nine hours, nine persons, nine doors on the ds be acceptable here?

Okay, after 9 episodes or so, I feel confident in saying: Symphogear is good

It's just so earnest in what it does! At first I thought the squeaky pool noodle disco monsters where dumb, but now they seem like a perfect fit for it. Goddamn. It really doesn't look to have much of a budget (first season at least), but I hope they keep ramping this up. I want to see stuff destroyed. Also, red-haired kungfu dude is my hero.

Favorite scene of the entire show so far:

Symphogear is BY FAR the dumbest anime I've ever watched, and it's awesome

Everybody is incredibly stupid, has the most ridiculously anime motivations and the hammiest of lines. It is pure anime.

I'm at episode 10 now. If the finale of the first season is any indication, this is gonna get good. Already got one attempted moon dunk. I've got a bottle of vodka ready, let's do this

I suspected I might get that answer.

What's up with Clannad in general, though? Is it just another High School Slice Of Life thing? Because I might be down for that at some point or another, but only if it does something interesting with it.

Cake Attack
Mar 26, 2010

nah it's more of a romantic melodrama? the first season is good but not great, basically a high school romance with some harem elements (the vn is a dating sim). it stands out mainly because it's funny and the main character is well characterized instead of being a bland cypher. also Kyo Ani direction

the second season, After Story, is why people mainly care about it because it follows the life of the main character and his girlfriend after they graduate and beyond. it's very good and sad imo, although some people would call it emotional manipulative in the ways it is sad. i don't entirely agree since i think it lands, but it's that sorta show, if i am making any sense

when i say melodrama i mean in the sad backstories and tearjerking events way
