Did they allude to the company name/size etc? In a small company someone could theoretically be responsible for all that, right?

I've met some pretty awesome sys/network admins that hold down 100-200 user shops and manage all this without many underlings.

I work for a small shop (~100) and currently do more than that. I have mid-level guy that helps out, but he is more user facing. I involve him with projects as I can to further his career and pick up a handful of tier-1 tickets every day so he does not burn out. If he's working on something that requires concentration I watch the Helpdesk for the half-day / day.

[Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I do not think this is exceptional or abnormal. Most SMBs have you wearing many hats. It just depends on how much you lean on consultants / MSPs. I have worked at much larger companies. Both have their pros and cons.]

It's likely a structured payout over 12 months just like your ordinary salary. Even if it's paid as a lump sum it's still ordinary income, but you would want to change your withholding to a fixed number (your actual target total tax amount) rather than letting it ride as a normal exemption based withholding.

If you take on a second job in this time frame make sure you spend a lot of time figuring out your W-4 situation so you don't have a hilarious tax bill.

Job postings like that are generally asking for someone who is passingly competent in those areas, not an expert, even if they don't know it. That's too much for anyone to be truly good at all of it, but you could certainly keep it all running by yourself in a small environment. A lot of it is pretty low touch, day to day.

That said it's still not worth it for the amount of money offered.

The chance at having a day where your EMC goes down, grinding VMWare to a halt, causing havok to the SQL database, and you're the only one there to get everything back up and running is reason enough to never take this job.

I hope they left off backups from the job list because they have an MSP regulated backup system, and not simply because the backups don't exist

It's part of your gross income, so it's taxed accordingly. I had 8 months severance through a similar situation (not outsourced, but redundancies). Withholdings were the same as a normal check from payroll (in terms of percentage), except no 401K or insurance premiums. Still had SSN, Fed and State tax withheld as per my W-4 on file.

You ain't kidding. I already had my current job set up, so I left that one, had two weeks off, and then started this one. It was crazy seeing my gross income that high, but it wasn't too bad since I'm pretty conservative on my withholdings. My typical refund was a little less that year.

There are plenty of people in the IT world who handle that level of stress on a daily basis. Small IT departments of a couple of people are rarely experts in their field, like NippleFloss said, but if you are an IT guy and that scenario scares you... work at a larger shop that allows for specialization. In this example, you have support from EMC and VMware, and hopefully have a backup of the SQL database for worst case scenario.

Your SAN going down is always going to be a bad day.

Its a stupid job posting. In order for Varonis to be remotely useful you've got to couple it with other TA tools, that's someone's full time job, or you might as well stop giving Varonis 17k a year.

Fun fact: We didn't have the staff to deal with varonis this year so we just let our licensing lapse until we can get an infosec group spun up in 2017.

I feel like I harp a lot on our InfoSec group (because I do), but we have Varonis and our InfoSec guys barely use it.

When upper management last asked about reporting and why Varonis wasn't alerting on AD security group changes the group said "Because Systems didn't teach us how to use it."

So now I have to learn Facebook Twitter Instagram and Pinterest, get the passwords from the random people in charge of each. All but Instagram ended in a pissing match. Soooo many dick pics to be sorted for re... Whatever Instagram does.

Tried to explain to my boss how clueless I am and he just said it's nerves. I'm smarter then I think I am, that kind of stuff.

Counter terrorism (CT I've decided to call it) is checking history on computers, setting up user instead of admin accounts and using our remote monitoring system for terrorism. I know nothing about network security, so I'm reading manuals on that and studying / saving for my comptia. I'm going to ask CEO if he'll front me on it. Say it's needed for my counter terrorism duties. I get next week's schedule tomorrow. Excited to see how many shifts like this I get.

Oh yeah, also plugging the computers into the UPS because they weren't for who knows how long.

Also put passwords on the routers and stuff.

You've put yourself into a position where you can learn some really good skills.
This is quite advanced stuff so you are going to probably struggle a lot. But you'll be able to leverage this into a high paying job if you get it down. I want to guess 80-120 depending on the area.

There's an enterprise windows thread, you'll want to be in there.

I don't want to pry too much, but I assume you have a domain.

Once you start taking away local admin privileges from people (They will hate this), you can use group policy to manage the entire system. You can do stuff like take away a user's ability to delete internet history etc.
You can set up auditing so that any time someone logs into a computer, there's a record. For file shares, you can set it so that any time someone moves or deletes a file, there's a record.

If this was a movie, you just got jumped by some local skinhead, accidentally knocked him on his rear end, and your parents decided that you have a talent for fighting and you've been sent to a kung-fu monastery. Prepare to get your rear end kicked, and if you survive you're going to be a beast.

e: Thanks for offering to help, I super appreciate it.

So I've set up the user accounts on about 30 computers today, and I'm finding different versions of our software and everything. I'm thinking of making a disk image, and just doing unattended installs. I have no idea what power my new title gives me, but I'm hoping I can ask for help to push buttons. We have no central network system to push out updates. I've got 100+ computers in operations (since I now have to fix the Non-Tech computers that work on the call floor,) and that's going to be annoying. Company policy says nothing should be saved on computers, and they're just set up in rows. I know there has to be an easier way to do this.

One person upgraded to Windows 10, which is fine, but I'm not sure what our licenses are. I've found multiple computers where employees have ripped off the OS stickers as well. I wrote a letter about how "terrorists" could use our keys, forcing us to spend money.

Tor guy was being grumpy since I asked him to knock that poo poo off, and started changing User Accounts.

Apparently, now I also fix Printers. The user didn't have the right drivers, so I'm throwing those on a flash drive for everyone else I find out with the same issue.

Someone installed Steam on the Operations floor, and was remoting in to their home computer to do steam play I think? I'm not sure, I just changed his U/N to "DON'T LOG IN AT WORK"

There's a lot more, but apparently when I go back to work Sunday, I'm scheduled for half a shift of Ticket Work (Idk what the IT name for that is,) and then another 4 hours of Counter Terrorism. The next day, I start with 4 hours of social media, then another 4 hours of ticket work. It's very random.

Someone was logged into their personal Chrome account, and linked their histories, left lastpass open. I just removed the account and sent them a personal email.

I ended up getting off like 3 hours late, because there was so much to do, an hour in, I had to go back, grab a binder and create little worksheets so I can keep track of everything.

This does not seem like a 17/hr job.

I'm creating a game plan for my CT shift. I have no idea how much I can play out the "Terrorism" card, but I'm not going to be able to just wing this.
