I've no experience with longswords, but stock Darkwood rapiers are something like 470. Meanwhile that sword cost 640, which is ridiculous for a custom piece. I'm new to fencing, about 4-5 months in, but when my instructor looked at my foil to repair it (it had been buzzing randomly), he said that I bought some "cheap Chinese knockoff" foil, so I'm looking for a new one. He recommended looking at Absolute, but when looking at their electric foil page, I'm more or less at a loss, since there are approximately a billion options. Apparently what I should be looking for is a foil that is easily maintained (i.e., I can buy the various tip parts for it easily), but I have no idea what the difference is between the "Absolute" tip point and, say, the German one, and that seems like one of the more straightforward options. My instinct is to just go for the "standard" foil with default options, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask the thread.

Standard is good, get FIE if you can afford it, always go german tips (epeeist talking).

Yeah go German tip. I like extra since it hides the screws, but v2 is good too. If you just started an fie blade might be more than you need. The absolute blades are cheap enough to be considered expendable until you get to a point where you'd know the difference. If you're close to a big tournament with vendors attending, trying out blades in person is always nice.

I'm not sure what he meant by "chinese knock-off" but the last time I did some digging into them Absolute sourced their store-brand components (i.e. the default options) in China. The blades don't last quite as long as name-brand, but are totally fine for beginners. Ask around and and hold club-mates weapons to choose the grip and just get all german electrical components. If you don't have a bunch of club-mates to pester, ask the coach for more input. Some coaches like teaching with pistol or french grips, and when you're starting out you don't want to be the one Belgian grip hipster in the class. I know there's been some weird poo poo reported like counterfeit violin strings turning up, but it'd be a bit surprising to see that happening with a niche market like fencing gear. As far as foils go, you're right that there are a whole bunch of options. But there are only really a couple of things you should be worrying about at this stage - the biggest one is quality/durability, and after that what kind of handle you want. Ask around your club to have a hold of different types and makes, there are a few different shapes but the majority of people like the standard pistol/orthopaedic grip. If you can afford it, shell out for a FIE rated blade: they'll last a lot longer compared to a "standard", easily a few years of moderate usage. There are differences in balance and flexibility between the various flavours you can get, but unless you're trying to do some crazy flicky poo poo it shouldn't make much practical difference. Some of them are a bit floppier than others, but whichever you choose, you'll get used to it very quickly. Personally, I have an Uhlmann BF and a Vniti and they're both great. Hey guys, thanks for your responses. I didn't go for an FIE blade just yet Apparently what he meant by a knockoff was that the construction was pretty poor, to the extent that the tip was neither German nor French (and thus really hard to fix since neither of those common parts fit it). But I got a new foil with a German tip and it feels lighter than the old one? I didn't really weigh them or anything. Maybe it's just in my head. Thanks again for your responses!

That kinda makes sense, I wish more parts were compatible between manufacturers. You could always get another German wire and tip and refurbish your old foil as a backup weapon, it's a bit fiddly to do but not that hard. As far as weight goes either is good, if it's heavier then that'll help you build up hand strength; if it's lighter then it'll be easy to move.

I sense that that's a source of anxiety of mine, exacerbated by the fact that it's in San Francisco (and thus subject to terrible SF cost of living/operating a business) and there aren't a whole lot of newcomers to make up for the rise in everything. I wouldn't mind passing along a few ideas if I could do anything to help.

My current club's a student one so we get a lot of people from stalls/flyers etc. during orientation week, plus some people contacting us directly having found our details on the web. I have helped with a thing previously at a local fair doing a stall and some demo bouting, but I don't think it got much traction (didn't help it was raining that day  ). I kinda get the feeling a lot of promo, like with all advertising, will fall on deaf ears if your audience isn't predisposed to wanting to try out a new sport, but fencing is kinda flashy and will get plenty of attention if you set up outdoors and get some bouts going.It's sad that fencing's so nichey, but hopefully it'l pick up in popularity. Anyone know if there'll be free webcasts of the Olympics? I'm in New Zealand and there's no way in hell they'll broadcast any of that here.

Yeah, personally I would love a court sword/smallsword/collichemarde/etc. to put on the wall. But sadly I'm on the wrong side of the world from where these things actually exist, and I imagine it'd be a world of hurt getting it past customs. It's probably best for my wallet this way.

I recently ordered a pair of Neyman Fencing's Thokk gloves from Poland. If you want specifically the Red Dragons, Corsair's Wares in the UK stocks them. Just be careful, I hear you get what you pay for with the Dragons.

Thanks for the links. Yeah I've heard the Red Dragon's aren't that awesome for heavier stuff like long sword etc but I'm getting them for bolognese sidesword and your hand is already pretty well protected in it but you need quite a bit of dexterity. A dude at our group has a pair of Thokk's but they're simply too cumbersome. Probably will need a pair of sparring gloves, heavies or something else too at some point.
