I mean Paradox has shown that they more-or-less get how to produce and support games well. They find niche titles and promote the hell out of them via streamers, build a ton of hype via word of mouth and watch the bucks from steam roll in. The DLC they've produced is often accompanied with free content, and they support their games for years and years.

I'd be surprised if they flushed all that good will down the toilet since they seem to have a good feel for the PC market so far, but who knows. I'm not going to assume this is the end times, but I might be cautious after this wave of releases.

Absolutely. I have long resigned myself to never making money on the stock market, so now I just buy shares in companies I want to support. I've ponied up god knows how much in DLC over the years, time to go all in!

One of us confused about what an IPO is especially given

Is it you? Because retaining a controlling stake in a company has nothing to do with an IPO; he could've just sold a part of the company to someone else privately and there's nothing to prevent him from just selling off what is does retain later to get out of the game. The way the press release reads it looks like some of their backers want to cash in on what they have and think they can get a better deal on the open market. When you take a company public you lose a certain amount of control over things. I'm sure the people who do drop a couple thousand/million dollars investing in the company would then expect to have no word whatsoever on what goes on.

I don't think they've even announced which exchange they plan on using, but with current investment rules where I live I don't think owning more than a share or two for the novelty would be worth it. Not unless they're expecting the price to take off or plan on offering hefty dividends.

They hinted at this when they bought White Wolf, though after it became clear they weren't going to do anything good with the World of Darkness I kind of stopped caring. That's kind of spilling over to this news- HoI IV has also taken so long it's kind of bled out my interest in upcoming Paradox games.

It's the direction they've decided on (Focusing on the Classic World of Darkness, no indications that they're dealing with the more problematic or dated aspects of that setting, etc.)

I'm in if it's on London or Hong Kong. I think it would be unwise to surrender majority control: the incentives of institutional investors aren't conducive to consistently pushing out high quality games. The pressure is more often to get out a minimum viable product and then only continue to develop if it looks like it's paying for itself. I'm sure that the paradox team has thought that through already though! And frankly they deserve to cash out: it's a great company.

If PDS is willing to make simulation and interaction a little less complex, they could easily put stuff like Stellaris on tablets. And new IPs made for mobile and consoles could use the platform even better. So even though the PC games will all be cancelled forever, there's a bright spot.

Paradox are running a survey on mobile/tablet gaming that includes questions with regards to full ports (and the ability to continue a campaign from one platform to the other), mobile versions and companion apps. I don't know how well the games could be optimised to work on tablets without compromising the mechanics, but there is always the option of hosting the game on a server or cloud so that the bulk of the game's computation, data storage etc. isn't done client-side. I would have to assume that that would be really expensive to maintain, though.
