I just discovered Kid Wave a few weeks ago, and I'm absolutely in loving love with their debut album (which came out last June). They're that sort of fuzzed-out indie poppy shoegazey rock that reminds me of nothing so much as the first Yuck album, or maybe old Lush? (speaking of which, Lush is releasing a new EP in April out of literally loving nowhere, and have a new song out from it which owns) Anyway, Kid Wave are so loving good. Guys it's In Search Of. But all their stuff is good. I've only had a chance to listen to the new album once so far, on the walk to work this morning. But it's pretty good. Not a shade on the 2009 album sadly :/ Standouts of the 6 previously unheard tracks: For U (really fun and weird), Over and Over (kinda dark like Black Tin Box, and Miike Snow's most "rock" song). Just finished "iii" and I gotta say I'm a fan. Genghis Khan and Heart of Me are some stellar loving singles, but the rest of it is varied and fun indie-pop. The Charli XCX is really nice (turns out "Sucker" flopping was a good thing, since it led to the SOPHIE collab and now this), and it seems like they've fully settled into a nice niche. My real takeaway? They now have just enough ammunition to have the perfect festival set. I've been dying to see them since I first heard the self-titled, and seven years later I know it'll be a good time. Hopefully they cross paths with RTJ here and there - Heart is Full is pretty boring, tbh, and Mike's verse really livens up the remix.

None of the songs are bad, and most of them have some kind of interesting hook. Confession: when I first heard their 2009 debut album I was completely blasé. I think the only impression I had after the first listen through was "That Horse song was a bit catchy". Took like 3 or 4 listens to appreciate the rest of the songs, and now it's one of my top 5 albums of all time. You never know how you'll feel about this album in a couple of weeks or years.

It's sort of the same way that I dig K-Pop that's explicitly using 90s R&B as a touchstone. Fake EDIT - I remember a few years ago they were running a bunch of ads on MTV claiming that Cafe Tacuba were the "Mexican Radiohead." That claim was not borne out by their sound, as I recall, though you might want to check out the band Zoe if that type of electronic-influenced alt rock is your thing. She recently got a break with a Tiny Desk invitation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tADWPTqR_4A She gets comped to Torres - at least more toward Torres' first self-titled album - for a minimalistic, deeply personal sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmGVIvf8Q6s Some of the best moments from her LP come when she really cuts loose, building almost to a wail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKiAQzYKrVo She recorded most (all?) of this album at 19, and has clearly been through some poo poo, but maintains a pretty upbeat personality in spite of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7ybB4oLqbE So, if you like feeling things while listening to music, she's for you.
