Speaking of Hangouts, what advantages is the service going to have when (if?) RCS becomes A Thing in the States? My understanding is that RCS is going to allow video chat, read receipts, smarter group messages, etc. Other than Hangouts' integration with Google allowing them to archive your conversation I don't see a ton of reason to keep using it.

Now, I say this as someone who never was able to use Hangouts to it's full potential because all the Android users I know make faces at the idea of using a messenger that isn't SMS or Facebook.

Hangouts is dead, Google is making a third messenger client for RCS because they're a bunch of ADD-riddled morons.

In true Google fashion, I say there's about an 90% chance that the third messaging client (let's ignore everything before Hangouts) will not have any integration with Google Voice voicemail transcripts at all, and Hangouts will be neglected more and more while reading voicemail transcripts will get harder and harder.

Still, living in a Google Voice world is pretty great.

Voicemails, SMS, and Hangouts all integrated into one app that also works seamlessly on the desktop and between devices...even WiFi-only tablets.

Is there any particular app people would recommend for planning a holiday itinerary? Something that could easily hold all my travel details, accommodation details, and planned activities in a clear and easily navigable way would be great.

I use google docs/sheets. Works from a phone, you can share and have others edit. Links work fine, and you can put pretty pictures if you want.

Is there a gold-standard app for changing the phone interface while you're driving? I'd like something I can use to bring up navigation, change music tracks (gpm), or call one of about three people without looking away from the road. I've tried doing all of this through voice, but it frequently fails to work (recent example: "call my wife" resulted in a google search for "all my life", followed by substantial swearing. I am not a calm driver). Bonus points if it can defer text and email notifications until I'm no longer behind the wheel.

Cool. I'll give it a try.

One more question: Is there a way to convince Maps to rotate so that up is the direction I'm headed while retaining the top-down perspective? My options seem to be top-down with a fixed compass orientation, or pseudo-3D.

Goddammit. I fiddled around with this for a bit and thought it was cool, but uninstalled it since I don't take many long road trips...except for the 14hr drive I made solo yesterday. Wish I'd remembered this.

I think part of my issue with it is that I never got the cobbled together Bluetooth system in my car working properly. The Bluetooth microphone doesn't work and the phone microphone tends to not pick up my voice properly when it's vibrating on the windshield in its mount. That and not having data when in the middle of a cornfield, so voice recognition not working anyway.

I'm pretty sure you just tap the compass.

Exactly what I was talking about. Tapping the compass just toggles the pseudo-3D.

EDIT: Turns out Automate has this option available for the map screen (instead of a fixed North = Up). Still don't see a way to do it in the google maps app.

I'd like to one day overlay all my walks to find out the local streets in my city that I've not seen. I was collecting this data in Tracks, but that is ending, though I have all my .kmz files in GDrive so all is well there. I switched to Google Fit, and that seems to create a street-by-street map as I walk, but the saved walks in the Fit web client and app don't show routes, just this:

Does this happen for anyone else?

Is there a way to get .kmz files out of FIt?

Is there a (free) app I should be using instead of Fit if my goal is to assemble all the new data together with the old Tracks data at a later point?

I'd use Caltopo.com for the overlay and OSMTracker for the recording...

What's the status of this dumb bug in Gmail where notifications don't get delivered? Last I heard it was something there were fixing server-side, and that was a few weeks back. I'm still not getting notifications reliably though, sometimes I'll get one or two but often I have to open the app to get it to sync. Are they still working on this or what.

Huh, didn't know that was a thing. I get notifications most of the time. It seems to sometimes not deliver them if my phone has been idle for a long time, like overnight. I just figured it was Doze doing its thing.

I'm still seeing the bug too. Oddly, one account seems to be delivering them fine, whereas my other account isn't.

I'm having a similar issue except with hangouts. With my work Gmail account I get notifications on the desktop and on my phone at about the same time. With my personal Gmail, despite only being logged in on my phone, I get no notifications at all unless I actually open up the app at which point it's pointless.

If you're having an issue with Hangouts notifications not being delivered to the phone, check to make sure you have your time & date being set by the network. A friend at work had a Samsung S5 Active and some update turned off network time and that causes Hangouts notifications to not work, turning it back on solved the problem immediately.

Pocket Casts is the best. I've never had a problem with it running while navigating, and unlike some music players it will actually pause the cast while some notification or anything else (Google maps lady talking) happens on your phone.

Anyone know of a way to get Spotify to reliably loving play whenever my phone connects to bluetooth? I was using Trigger for this with google play music and it worked 95% of the time. With spotify, it works maybe 5% of the time. There's an app called "bluetooth connect & play" or something like that which worked a little more reliably, with the annoying side effect of it actually opening up the spotify app on my screen. I don't want that, I just want it to resume playing.

I'm currently using llama to do this on my phone. I have an event that fires off when I connect to my cars bluetooth and if my phone is charging. If both are true then it starts Spotify and changes the bluetooth volume to max. I would assume that if you are already running Spotify it should work but I haven't tested that.

Is there an easy, non-root way to get my phone to turn down its ringer volume when I get to work and turn it back up when I leave? Location based would be best, but creating a time based rule would be acceptable. I don't want my phone to go silent, I just don't need it blaring at full volume when other people are working.

Llama or Tasker will both do it. I do this (except silent, but same principle) with Tasker and I base it on whether it can see my work Wi-Fi network since it's more reliable than location/time.
