When it comes to metal how much I enjoy vocals is directly proportional to how tortured and unintelligible they are. I tried to get into Weedeater a while back but the vocals really turned me off. Not nearly gnarly enough.

No vocals you say? Try Belzebong, Bongripper, Ufomammut, or Serpent Throne.

I can and do enjoy vocals in lots of music, even some stoner/doom stuff like Elder, Orchid, Windhand, Yob (though its not great) but anything that is close to just generic black metal growling sounds super out of place and annoying.

I mean I like Cannibal Corpse vocals and High on Fire is well suited to the music, but some of this stuff just sounds like a black metal vocalists side project.

Yob live is a totally different experience to Yob recordings. I loved every second of Yob live. I love the albums. I guess Im being a bit harsh on it because Mikes got a pretty good range and I think hes probably one of the better vocalists in the genre.

AS we discussed a few pages back, Yobs recording production kinda sucks and never captures how heavy they are.

Black metal vocals are cool, but also, most stoner/doom band vocals do not sound like typical(as far as this is possible) black metal vocals.

Acid Bath is a band whose vocals ruin it for me. I really never gave them much of a chance because that dude reminded me of Eddie Veder mixed with nu metal. Granted, I wrote them off so long ago I should probably give them another chance someday.

Yeah if it's the only show in New England it could sell out fast. Sleep did mention a show on 6/23 TBA, so that could possibly be in MA or CT.

maybe joining a doom band as a drummer, but my knowledge of the genre is fairly pedestrian.
If you guys could maybe post some influencing material that has groovy but powerful beats on simpler kits (I'm only going to have a single pedal kick and one crash+ride) It'd be super appreciated

E: so I'm not just bombing in here with no content, this is a recent release that I've been pretty into. It's also in the vein of the drumming that im talking about.

Not to add to the current discussion, but Paris 70 is gold...and can anyone else point out any essential Sabbath shows? Dumfries 69 is a cult classic, but I admit I dig Paris 1970 and the California Jam for all of their raw power and bloat, respectively.

Don't listen to doom for inspiration. Seriously, if you want some heavy groove, listen to 70s hard rock, old blues and jazz. I've seen so many bands that are just carbon copies of each other because they think doom should be played like that when it's the complete opposite, doom should NOT be played like that because it's become boring as hell.

Like, if you listen to Joey (RIP) on EHG, he's a jazz drummer. If you listen to Magma on Bongzilla, he's a jazz drummer. JP Gaster on Clutch? Jazz. Bands with the most interesting drumwork have guys who aren't trying to stick to any established genre rules, and neither should you.

Yeah, sleazy jazz and roadhouse blues are a massive plus in stoner/doom. Try:

http://youtu.be/xYQlDRMhsPI

Or for something more psychedelic

https://youtu.be/XR8LFNUr3vw

https://youtu.be/BJIqnXTqg8I

http://youtu.be/s8cjJQJaWMs

If all else fails just ride the gently caress out of that crash cymbal on every beat... Seems to work out for most bands.

One thing a lot of sludge drummers do that I really like is they basically play really closely with the riff. Joey of EHG was a master at this:

Weedeater is so deceptive if you've only listened to the albums. Dixie is a goddamned lunatic and I love the way they set up with all Travis sitting sideways between Shep and Dixie. Jean-Paul Gaster is probably the best rock drummer alive today. As good as Clutch's albums are, nothing compares to the funk they bring to their live shows.

Hearing this really makes me pumped to see them in May. I watched a couple of live outtakes from them, and they look fun as hell. Also I watched a video of Author & Punisher who I never heard of before. While I might not exactly like the music, this one man band/machine looks super interesting to watch at least.

https://vimeo.com/15829164

Talking about Weedeater having a lot of personality leads me to Conan. I just saw them, and I hear is a picture showing how close I was (it was a dark show).

Much respect to them for coming from so far away. They were loud as hell, and my ears are still ringing (the worst they ever been). That said they pretty much had zero personality, and it wasn't for the group I was with it would of been sort of boring. My friends did party a little with Conan after the show, and by all accounts they are super cool. Also you couldn't hear no vocals at all during the show. I have been to this club several times before to see bands (everything from black metal to Americana), and this was the only time I've had this issue there. I hate to say anything bad, because overall I had a good time. I'm just a little disappointed given the hype I heard before hand about them live.
