When I was in high school and middle school, some of my friends were from lovely broken homes. Some of them wouldn't even get access to one meal at home a day. She never had to be asked, never grumbled, or anything, If you were there at any meal time, you ate, and there was always a plate at the dinner table set for you, no one ever had to eat in the kitchen or on the porch. If someone was over that had food allergies, she already knew, and made sure to fix a meal for everyone without those ingredients in them. If she was picking up burgers at Dairy Queen, even if you weren't blood, you still got fed the same way as everyone else. If the person that was over needed a place to stay that night, they had a bed with pillows and clean sheets, or, if we were out of beds, we got out cots and sleeping bags. Every one of my friends had a labeled toothbrush in the bathroom, changed every three months, whether it needed it or not, and everyone had their own bar of Irish spring that was in a labeled ziplock bag. If your clothes were dirty, she'd let you use the washer, and if your clothes were in too bad of a condition, she'd dip into hand-me-downs, or would dole out a brand new pair of socks and underwear from somewhere. I found out that she bought packs of fruit of the looms in every size just to make sure they were on hand when needed.

While the stuff she was providing wasn't luxury level, she wanted to make sure that everyone felt safe and clean, and cared for, even if things were rough at home.

You misunderstand - the weed/shrooms/LSD guys aren't usually that bad, it's the others that are experimenting with weird chemicals and compounds that could literally kill someone at doses below a single milligram. These are the same people for whom regular weed or other easy-to-get recreational drugs are either "not strong enough" or "for pussies who are scared to try something new". Then someone ODs and dies in their car in the summer, or some idiot blacks out, wrecks a car, fights EMTs/police, and gets admitted to a psych ward because they're, well, stupid as hell.

Then again some of those same people waffle between "so-and-so died, I should really cut back or quit" and "psh, that'll NEVER happen to me" *snorts mystery powder, has seizure, falls down steps and dies*
