Start the launcher executable directly rather than through Steam

Is it trying to start the game windowed? If you fire up the launcher instead of the main game you can switch it to full screen mode, which works. I'm using Windows 10.

Arthopods are in so I assume there will be shellfish in addition to bugs.

Nah it's the other way around, I want it windowed, but the option is greyed out like yours is.

I'd prefer Rome II to Vicky III, but Vicky's probably more likely.

EDIT: Session scheduler describes King as 'Senior Game Designer, Paradox Interactive', so I guess he's returned to work on V3. V3 confirmed.

I did not like King's contributions to V2. The whole reason the economy is so hosed up is that they put a trickle down Thatcherite in charge of designing the economy and way the world, specially capitalism, works. That's like putting a homeopath in charge of a medical sim.

Returns to Paradox a couple months before the space 4x releases.

Honestly I don't think that's the real issue with Victoria's economy - it's that the capitalist AI is really bad at deciding what to build, and factories don't seem to be able to operate at a loss, so one day of bad sales sends them into a death spiral.

Also if the game was meant to demonstrate the superiority of the free market, it failed pretty miserably considering that factories are basically guaranteed to shut down without government subsidies, and because of the aforementioned stupid AI planned economy/state capitalism end up being by far the best choices.

That was my favourite part, from his posting unless "cocky conservative capitalist" was just a joke persona I believe he did design the game with an eye towards showing the superiority of the free market and how social programs were useless wastes of money. I recall him saying he was horrified how in V1 the working class would almost always drift towards socialism and how he was horrified that the game didn't depict this as a disaster, but actually as a good way of running a country.

I think that's why I liked V1 so much more than V2. In V1 I felt like I could actually steer a country one way or another and eventually get there, and you could have a fairly rewarding experience going off the rails one way or another. In V2 it felt like I was always fighting the system, never in control of anything just sort of reacting to stuff while dreaming that maybe in 100 years if I play perfectly I could increase my vote for some upper house party enough to actually have enough control over my country to do something fun.

This is exactly what I felt like when playing V2 as compared to V1. If I didn't have to deal with the fuuuuucking interface fighting against me to do anything in V1, I'd probably still just be playing it.

The mechanical debt Vicky owes to Imperialism was the biggest thing I noticed when I first play V1. But Imperialism was comparatively streamlined and elegant, but Vicky 1 & 2 were like an 'ideas guy' had got a hold of it and cranked the complexity dial way past 11 to like 24.

I have said before the Vicky games are beautiful and flawed creatures and in a perfect world there would be no Vicky 3 because they would retire the name and make an actual fun to play game instead of a Frankenstein's monster of mechanics of economics and social movements that are playing their own game underneath whatever one you think you might be playing. But a Vicky 3 without the baggage would be insulting to the beautiful hot messes of the past.

I spent about a year way back learning how to play Ricky. Each time was a traumatizing experience of confusion, terror, machine parts and capitalists before I had to cut my losses and quit as my country descended rapidly into bankruptcy and chaos. Then one day I just seemed to get what was going on and I realized that Ricky was beautiful.

Run it windowed with the resolution *slightly* smaller than your native res (i.e. edit the .ini to be like 1900x1050 if you normally use 1920x1080). For some reason this works (and runs at normal speed not the crazy lag you get in full screen) but don't move the window because if you do and it touches the edge of the screen it crashes.

No I am not joking and I have no idea why this fixes it.

I recall him saying he was horrified how in V1 the working class would almost always drift towards socialism and how he was horrified that the game didn't depict this as a disaster, but actually as a good way of running a country.

Yet as a result, he unwittingly showed socialism was a great option again, depending on your country. Small countries benefited heavily by socialism, communism, some dictatorships, and some fascist governments. None of them really benefited from the free market, as often your capitalists would be stupid in building priorities and they'd go bankrupt without subsidies the minute the market had any fluctuations. This would tank your industrial score, lowering your rank, locking you out of even more goods from the market, causing more factories to close, etc, etc.

However, if you played as a large country like China or Russia, it was better to be free market once you got the initial industry set up. Because otherwise players would die a slow death of a thousand clicks.

Also, on release capitalists had insane demands for resources. Luxuries could never be satisfied, which made them pissed. So pissed they'd revolt to change your government in the vain attempt to fix the problem. Except no matter how free market you were, no matter how anarcho-liberal (pseudo libertarian?) you were, you could never solve their insatiable hunger for more. So they kept revolting, even though they were getting their way. Massive waves of revolts rocked western countries all over the globe. The game was pretty broken on that front. It was later patched, but it gave players even more incentive to hate capitalists.

So for all his efforts, he certainly made a good case for socialism and communism.

I don't remember that.

What I do remember is that, at release, there were no limits on who could assimilate. Meaning that, by 1900 or so, the entirety of the Indian subcontinent would go British. One billion primary-culture POPs makes for a hell of a lot of industry :catstare:

Also Victoria is actually good and fun and I will greet the third instalment with joy, good cheer and a primal lust for wildly overdesigned economic simulations. :colbert:
