Holy gently caress. I love drinking heavily as much as the next person, but .295 BAC? That is seriously, seriously drunk. That's nearly 6 times the level that will get your license suspended and car towed here, and rapidly closing in on alcohol poisoning.

Enjoy your tea...

Going for a change of tone with a positive anecdote for once. Given the weather in the UK today and a couple of accidents on the M20 that prompted me to divert through the countryside, my commute went from this:

http://gfycat.com/DevotedHollowDromaeosaur.webm

To this:

http://gfycat.com/FeistyVillainousBuzzard.webm

Unfortunately, the road I use as my alternate route was closed. I looked at the map on my phone and figured out a way around the blocked road. So off I went.

http://gfycat.com/ElegantIncomparableHackee.webm

Unfortuantely the alternate route I figured out was also blocked, due to a fallen tree, as advised by a car turning around who flagged me down. Luckily the two cars I met were both going to the same place I went, and actually knew the route and told me to follow them. So off we embarked on our journey! Containing such wonders as lovely narrow countryside roads on bendy steep hills with incredibly muddy passing places!

http://gfycat.com/DiscreteBabyishFinch.webm

Endless amounts of muddy water!

http://gfycat.com/OrganicDearHummingbird.webm

60mph roads so narrow a Nissan Micra looks big travelling down them!

http://gfycat.com/ForcefulObedientKakapo.webm

But with the help of my newfound friends I was able to get to work without too much difficulty, despite my car now being filthy and caked in mud everywhere that isn't swept by a wiper blade. Honestly though, I would take Commuting to Work Rally Championship 2016 any day over stop start slowly creep forward queues. The possibility of death around every sharp corner really adds a level of excitement to what is an otherwise dull trip.

No, the romans forced them to build a few good roads under threat of decapitation and then once the empire fell (or more specifically, the money stopped showing up) everyone decided they didn't actually give a poo poo.

Is it actually true that driving with headphones is illegal or is it another one of those myths like driving with bare feet is illegal?

I ask because can't deaf people drive? And doesn't a motorcycle helmet combined with wind noise combined with a motorcycle exhaust block out just as much noise as headphones would?

It's actually better to ride with ear plugs than without. They block the high frequency wind noise and actually let you hear cars better. Plus, wind noise is exhausting, so ear plugs let you concentrate better. The exhaust is far enough behind the rider and pointed the wrong way that it doesn't sound as loud as it does to others.

Also, no ear plugs can lead to hearing damage. Ask my tinnitus!

It's gonna vary state to state like most traffic laws I would think. In MD, under § 21-1120, it's technically only illegal if both ears are occupied:

quote:

(a) Earplugs.- A person may not drive a motor vehicle on any highway or on any private property that is used by the public in general in this State while the person is wearing over or in both ears earplugs.

(b) Headsets.- A person may not drive a motor vehicle on any highway or on any private property that is used by the public in general in this State while the person is wearing over or in both ears a headset.

(c) Earphones.- A person may not drive a motor vehicle on any highway or on any private property that is used by the public in general in this State while the person is wearing over or in both ears earphones attached to a radio, tape player, or other audio device.

Earplugs make long drives so much nicer. They filter out engine + wind noise but let music through if you turn it up. Not really worth it for short drives within a city but on the highway it's great.

I started doing this after I realized my ears were ringing for a good 20 minutes after a shift driving a big diesel rig, but it helps in a car too.

Nothing, as far as I can tell. I do it for most of the summer, because driving wearing flip-flops is pretty loving stupid; flip flops like to catch between the floor and the pedals or just catch the pedals etc. Driving feels much more tactile barefoot. I can heel-toe my TJ barefoot but not with shoes on.

This was in nearly bumper to bumper traffic. It had been at a standstill for like a minute when the guy decided "Nope time to change lanes" and jerked from the left lane into the right and hit me from the rear left corner. I was in front of him, he squeezed in front of the car that was about a half a car length behind me, and should have clearly seen my hatchback in front of him, as we'd both been sitting there waiting to move.

Being on two wheels really doesn't help. It's really great when bro trucks miss me with inches to spare on purpose, roll coal, and scream things like "get a car," "get off the road," and "gently caress you human being."

In Belgium we're no longer sharing the road with a specific driver. A few years ago a dashcam video was posted online of a driver in a black BMW brake-checking and nearly causing an accident. As it turned out, this was a kind of notorious driver: yesterday he was sentenced to 18 months in jail and his car(actually owned by his ex-girlfriend) was impounded. A total of 23 witnesses of his behavior showed up. In previous cases he called himself a victim of other people's driving. The dashcam footage(there's a few other videos of him) is part of the reason he was sentenced.

Unfortunately all I can find are Dutch articles about this, and as I'm at work I can't locate the original video but I'm fairly sure it was posted in this thread before. If you feel like Googling, the name "Curd V" should give some neat results.

There's no mentioning in any of the news articles about it if it's an attempt at insurance scamming, just assholish behavior and not wanting to accept other people passing him. He also repeatedly ordered a new slightly different license plate(at 2000 euros a pop), probably some attempt to make him harder to identify. He also didn't show up for any of the trials, calling in sick instead.

If you think those roads are bad, imagine doing them in run flat tyres and sport suspension like I have to. My traction control was going ballistic at times.

Whilst its vaguely reassuring to know that should I suffer a puncture I won't get stuck, its somewhat disconcerting when your wheels tramline and skip about trying to put you into a ditch at the slightest inkling of a lovely road surface. Can't wait to ditch the damned things.
