If you think that, along the way, you're not going to fail... you're blind.

There's no one I've ever met, no matter how successful they are, who hasn't said they had their failures along the way.

I dunno if the actor makes a difference, if the choreographer is still a dumbass and the cinematographer isn't competent enough to cover the holes.

Like, Jason Statham is a good movie fighty man, but if his choreographer is the rear end in a top hat who hosed-up Street Fighter and the camera is organized by the film school version of Adolf Hitler, he's going to look terrible.

The dorne sequence was ridiculously bad but it's not like this show didn't have several decent fighting sequences in the past, the dorne sequence suffered from them having very little time to film it but also quite possibly due to the sand snake actresses not having any clue about how to pretend fight, or act.

Now, I fully expect the tower of joy sequence to end with some guy stepping in from off camera and stabbing Dayne in the back like a chump but I do believe that before that we are going to get at least a minute of competent over the top sword twirling from that sword specialist they hired for the role.

There have been lots of bad fight scenes though. The Jorah/GreyWorm breakin, every time anybody ever fought in Mereen, Jon Snuh getting his face smashed into an anvil with no effect, etc.

Even with a lovely camera angle Jason Statham will know how to fight and how to make a fight look good and brutal. If at least some of the people in the Tower of Joy fight scene have actual training then they can make it look decent enough to avoid Sand Snakes 2.0 taking place. They've made it clear that they know the fight at the Tower of Joy was a really big deal and pretty much everyone involved was a well trained veteran swordsman. Maybe they'll take a page from LotR and bring a trainer in to teach everyone how to use a sword if they don't have past training like the actor playing Arthur Dayne.

Or maybe they'll blow money on some more 4 vs Dragon CGI and the Big Battle that people have been taking pictures of.

Um, "the film school version of Adolf Hitler" was exceptionally good with a camera, particulary when shooting action scenes.

Fun things are fun. Nerds like fun. Are you a nerd who likes fun?

There's a great fantasy series you can read that has world-building and great stories in it. It's called A Song of Ice and Fire and starts with A Game of Thrones. It's pretty great. It's written by the guy that did the Beauty and the Beast TV Show.

Nerds have nerdism (I know I do) and want fantasy worlds to escape to. D&D, comics, comic movies and fantasy, especially the kind like Captain America where the ultimate 4F becomes insanely fast and strong and looks good in tights.

I really liked it, but I read it in my 20s. Not sure how it has held up. I mean the dude is play Wagner in a storm, maybe that poo poo flew in the 80s, but its 2020 now you know? I was also too dumb to get the connection to the Canterbury tales format on the first read through. A few of the tales were boring at times ( I'm looking at you Consul Flashback ), but overall I enjoyed them, and I couldn't get to book 2 fast enough. I really like how he describes the tech of war in the Kassad stories.

The first 2 go together ( part 1 / part 2 ), and yeah. definitely read those two. Most people agree books 3/4 sucked, but I liked them. I also like God Emperor of Dune though so YMMV. Everything AFTER those two books has been complete poo poo. I mean I read the loving Illiad in Latin, and I think that was less tedious than ILLIUM.

I just did a re-skim of The First Law Trilogy this weekend... can someone clarify some points?

Did the Adepti / Sult actually manage to kill High Justice Morovia with Magic? Or was that Yoru Sulfur's doing?

Was Tolomei's spirit free all those years since she had died? Was she only awakened once Bayaz was ready to search for the seed?

Sulfur definitely kills Marovia. I'm pretty sure they reveal it a bit later, after that body is found, he wants to take his place to protect jezal. Tolomei I'm not sure. She definitely replaces quai fairly early. My guess is she got out when they visit the house of the maker. When was logen's vision?

They imply that Sult and his magicians do it - but that just could be to build drama for the anti-climactic moment when breaking Sult's spell does... nothing. BUT the method... some sort of ice/explosion thing I don't think that is one of Yoru's abilities is it? And it implies sult wasdoing some sort of Ice magic / Cold summoning poo poo when they break in on him. I'm curious if Sult actually accomplished any useable magic. Not that it really matters, but was just curious.

Was there something that mentioned that Yoru did it, other than the fact that he took his shape? Yoru could have pretended to be Marovia in all the war chaos without killing him. Although killing him probably worked out for Bayaz just fine.

Tolomei : I had originally assumed she got out from the house of the maker when they opened it back up... but on a re-read, she was not in the HOM. She was thrown out side, and buried along with Kanedias. While in the grave, the Other Side talked to her. Because of her use of the Seed, she was given extra powers ( much like Ferro is shown to have , right? ). So my question is... WTF was she doing for 1000 years ... chilling in the ground? Maybe the Other Side kept her rear end in limbo until the time was right?

Something else that bugged me this read through... just because you locked the front door to the HOM, doesn't mean they are "locked in". I mean.. the drat thing had all of The Maker's tools and treasures inside, plus a giant loving window that apparently you can just throw people out of. Doesn't seem like a great "prison", nor one that would hold Tolomei for very long ( at this point at least - I always assumed that Tolomei wasn't given free reign of the tower when Kanedias was away ) .

The last part of LAoK was really hectic and I'm not remembering specifics. If have to look through it again. I didn't think that sult even knew morovia was dead. Didn't sulfur make the explosion in the tower in the first book, or was that tolomei? I don't think there was a precedent for the ice thing but we never really got a good sense of the magi's abilities, I just added it to the list.

I went looking for quotes, and Bayaz straight-up tells Glokta, in a moment of relative honesty, that it was Sult. Looks like you are right. There's some chance he's lying still, and it's pretty suspect that Sulfur took his form, but I'm with you now. I guess I just assumed it was Bayaz before.

In the books the Tower of Joy sequence was a fever dream of a man who was on a shitload of fantasy morphine so his companions are shadowy wraiths and they literally pull the tower down to make headstones for the dead. Since that plotline ended years ago in the show they're probably not going to bother with any of that and just have it be a standard flashback.

hey good catch, thanks. ok, so then... that seems like it is actually a pretty big deal - if I were glotka, I'd be all over finding that poo poo out from sult. it probably doesn't matter - we never really revisit glotka as a character. I wonder if that is one of abercrombie's things... you get a slice of the story pie, and some small resolution, but that is it. The game just goes on and on, without permanent resolution. Which is fine. In fact, GRRM could take a page from that loving book.
