There is literally no reason to use anything other than arch. Rhel is the only alternative but only because it has corporate support. Everything else is a complete pile of broken poo poo.

it is more complicated you smuggo garbage nerd. it is true that anyone can follow a set of instructions, and it is more "simple" in some ways, but normal people have reasonable expectations for desktop operating systems, like for poo poo to just work without needlessly futzing around with internals and config files. arch devs also don't care if their updates break poo poo (i know "read the news", also gently caress you)

i think that's kinda the point. if you're gonna use linux, either use the reliable one, or use the bleeding edge one.

i use fedora 23 and i couldn't, in 5 minutes or less, find a way to install a jdk < 1.8. That makes no sense to me.

what did you end up doing? i see there's poo poo like jEnv though i haven't used it, seems similar to perlbrew. if what i'm working on requires annoying specific tooling i'll usually just spin up a vm

Like I think the only loving about with config files that I can remember was pulse audio when there was a very noticeable audio delay in some games, but that was the default pulse audio config and I had to make the exact same changes when I tried out Debian anyway. The only other complicated aspect of it is maybe doing the installation, but obviously that is one off and takes like ten minutes. And honestly, I can count on one hand the number of times a pacman upgrade has broken something, and every time it was something idiotic to do with GNOME, which thankfully I don't use anymore.

If you're a mouth dribbling computer retard who couldn't care less about which crappy OS you run then yes arch might be a bit beyond you, but if you foresee being productive at all with your computer then you might be interested in using an OS which is totally transparent, easy to maintain, and contains libraries in its repositories which aren't loving years out of date, or aren't held back by idiotic free software ideology.

OldAlias

no normal people will think that is reasonable. i've used arch a lot to get use out of ancient machines with windows managers, it's fine. there is a lot more potential fuckery and it's more of a time investment.

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
so how long before oracle buys redhat, closes up everything as much as they can, and only lets people on maintenance contracts get even the smallest updates?

99% of computer users are retards who install an OS and never want to janitor it ever. It's the OS devs' responsibility to make poo poo work.

As a twenty year old single male I think it's very hard to find a girl who's actually interested in free software. I've had girls jokingly ask to "Netflix and chill" but when I tell her that I don't use Netflix since Netflix requires proprietary software to stream content, they stop talking to me. And worse if they do stay they think I'm weird since I blocked google IP's in my host file and we can't even watch youtube. I can't ever seem to get girls to come over to my place and I can't text them either. Once I get their numbers since I've added customs roms to my phone and refuse to use sms since it's a security concern I require all of my friends to download a free and open source messaging app and I share with them my public gpg key so that we can verify that our conversations are secure. None of my friends are willing to do this. And I can't use sites like tinder since it's not only proprietary software but a major privacy vulnerability. How come it is so hard to find a girl concerned about software freedom. I feel like I'm going to be a virgin forever.
