Can't change it in game either. Apparently you're locked to low if you have 2GB of VRAM.

Also for some reason the game skipped the intro cinematic for me. Had the usual Developers/Publishers/USE AMD BITCH! Multi ethnic etc screens but then it just went straight to the game and '20 years earlier...' I'm guessing this video is supposed to play, right?

I think that plays after the tutorial.

The Tutorial from a plot perspective, mild spoiler:

The tutorial is back when 47 just started with the agency. You go through a few missions and at the end, you get christened as "Agent 47." The video you linked then plays to give a montage of all the badass stuff 47 does between then and Paris.

Made a contract where I stabbed a guy while dressed as a chef and then wrote a long screed about cannabalism in the description. So that was fun. Really enjoying the game and the variety of dumb poo poo you can get up to.

Killing the targets by dropping one onto the other was a good laugh.

Silent Assassin Suit Only on Showstopper took a while because I really really really had to kill Dahlia with a silenced pistol.

Turns out you only get frisked once. Just go back downstairs and grab your gun and nobody cares. Or climb up the outside pipes I didn't know about at first.

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.

Having never played a Hitman game, what are people thinking about this latest incarnation so far, compared to Blood Money? I'm still debating dipping my toe in this (the newer, presumably more refined game, even if it's technically not done yet) versus the much older but proven entry in the series.

(ed) I've watched videos of both and it definitely seems like something I'd have fun with, though I'm less than certain about the Opportunities system or whatever it's called. Much as I actually do appreciate handholding, it seems like it might be a little too much so for a game like this. Am I wrong?

(ed again: I'm one of those weirdoes who has trouble playing older 3D games because of how badly they tend to age, otherwise I'd probably have just bought BM and been done )

Doing a contract was what led me to discover the the pipes that lead up to the third floor. Even though it makes it easier because no one finds you suspicious doing it I kind of like being able to just sneak my up there especially because the first time I did it one of the auctions guests that saw me climb onto the balcony was all like, "That's cool as poo poo, how did you learn to do that?"

Blood Money is one of the best stealth/adventure games ever made and I'd definitely consider it better than the new version (so far)

So I didn't feel like doing my usual sneaky routine in Paris and decided to see how many people I could kill before I got completely rumbled and killed, and I actually finished the mission, I just tossed a knife at Dahlia and shot Victor as he was being escorted to the safe room, I actually did most of the killings dressed as the Sheikh who came running when I turned on a radio in the bathroom.

It was fun to not care about stealth and just murder everyone in your path and doing it in ways that don't get you spotted, and if you do get spotted, killing them before they can alert anyone else.

You get to the auction room and set off the fireworks display. Victor comes outside downstairs to rant at them being set off early and Dahlia goes to the balcony above him to look. Push her off and she lands on Victor killing them both.

I'm finding it to tough to tell. Blood money is literally my favourite game of all time and linked to a bunch of nostalgic memories, so this new game could be the best thing ever and still be unable to measure up in my mind. That said, I think it's very good and modernises a lot of stuff from blood money that needed to be modernised. I'd need to see more than one level before I could really make a judgement. The fashion show is a great level but it has to face against levels like a House of Cards and A New Life, which were both amazing in very different ways.

I am a little concerned that the episodic model will mean we won't get any tight contained levels like A New Life since the model calls for big levels each time to make buying the individual episodes worth it. I'm hoping they might throw in some small levels along with the next big one, kind of like the demo levels.

Also The Church of Ascendants are totally going to be the overarching villains.

I finally just got around to playing Paris. It was way too easy IMO, BUT I did murder each mark in person and haven't tried the fireworks show, poison, other accidents, etc. I pushed the dude into the water after his meeting outside, I killed the woman in private in the room next to the auction that has a bathroom attached. I think I knocked out a total of 3 or 4 people to complete the level and get SA and 5 stars. I'm lokking forward to having fun with it now and exploring the entire level, and killing the targets in other ways.

I do think it's a great game so far. BUT I do think only having 6 maps in the end is going to hurt it. I hope they change their mind and add more, even if it's DLC. Either that or I hope they're already working on another game.

I've sunk hundreds of hours into Blood Money, and was so excited for and then disappointed by Absolution. FINALLY it feels like we have a worthy successor to Blood Money.

I kind of love how the security guards' dialogue is very deliberately made to be as insufferably lovely as possible when you're in certain disguises, mainly the waiter and the dresser. "Smile for that extra tip!" "Keep those glasses full!" "Can't have you prancing around upstairs, you pussies need to get a real job!". Makes for some real cathartic contract fodder though I'm sure plenty of ~gamers~, especially hitman forums users, will hear that last comment and think "yeah!!!!"

Opportunities can be turned off entirely (including the submenu that lists them), as can Instinct and the minimap. The only thing in that regard that you can't bring back from BM is a live map, since the game pauses when you look at the map screen.

The only thing previous (proper) HM games have over this one IMO is consistency of AI routing and more natural, less SHARE THIS SWEET KILL ON YOUTUBE type "opportunity" design (also difficulty select and post-mission papers seriously come ON IOI). Otherwise, yeah, I have a fair bit of confidence in this now. The jank is a real bummer but unlike certain modern releases the division there seems to be a genuinely well-designed game underneath the woes of modern game publishing.

I also feel like IOI has grown up a bit while still retaining a sense of humour that's not "aren't minorities just so gross and weird???", though some shots in the trailers (most recent gameplay one included) suggest it might go down that route, and like everything else, it's best to reserve judgement 'till we've played more.

The one thing I'd advise new players to do is shut off opportunity indicators / menus. Like I'm not the sort of guy who's mad at ~casuals~ all the time, but the whole notion of spelling out all the creative ways to get at your targets in painstaking detail just smothers everything that was wonderful about Blood Money.

There's also the fact that only certain methods will set off the chain reactions that are the hallmark of the best BM missions. Having to kill the opera singer and then immediately figure out a way to pin down the ambassador, or killing one costumed assassin and then rushing to find the others before they figure out what's happening, added a climactic feeling to missions that's lacking in Paris. I can up and shoot a dude while he's standing in front of an adoring crowd and there's no sense of chaos or pandemonium at all.

Why does Steam allow morons to spam reviews for a game complaining about problems on their end like garbage GPU or bad internet?

I decided to write a quick review for the first time ever and holy crap the page is spammed with crybaby idiot reviews whining about online-only from people who I guess don't have reliable high-speed internet? I mean, what is the problem with needing an online connection, how in the hell else would you use steam and download games in the first place?

I for one love the instincts and guides and all that jazz. Lot's better than spending the precious time I have wandering around a level aimlessly trying to figure poo poo out for hours. Love the new trend of appealing to casuals, gets rid of all the grognardy aspects but still lets you have the authentic experience.

I think the thing about opportunities is they would be bad if it was literally all there was in the level. I felt like that was a big issue in Absolution - it seemed like every method of killing your target outside of just running up and shooting them was some pre-scripted event. In the new one though there's lots of other little things you can use outside of opportunities - they make a point to have the targets just wander around a lot, drinking and eating various things you can poison, standing under chandeliers, etc. that isn't specifically pointed to by an opportunity but you can spot it if you follow them around and watch their patterns. Opportunities are just a way to show you how to trigger certain events in the level, and not all of them lead directly to a kill - sometimes they just change your target's behaviour or get you in to another part of the map.

Basically, they're just there as more things for you to play with, they don't just hand you the level on their own. Plus as mentioned, you can turn off the tracking if you don't like the popups - the events themselves will still be there if you know what to do; you just won't have the UI pointing you where to go.

It's a valid complaint, if your internet so much as hiccups for a few seconds (which most ISPs do), it's not a big deal with a download, but it's a huge deal with a game that will immediately boot you out of whatever you're doing, leaving you at the mercy of a fickle autosave. The servers have also gone down several times in the past couple of days and the leaderboards are seemingly broken, so they haven't been handling the online part of their always-online game too well on their end either.

And hey, some peeps just don't have internet for a while, it happens, and singleplayer games are usually a way to play games without needing internet, not to mention the long-term idea that most of the games' content could be wiped out without a trace should the publisher desire. There's no need to defend major companies doing dumb crap like this, even if armchair developer r/games-types will find a way to be as insufferably smug as possible about it regardless of context.

Also don't read Steam reviews, seriously. There's a reason creepy anime porn made by actual unambiguous real-life scumbags has been making it into the top releases and front page a lot recently, and it's not because the Steam community's most vocal/least financially burdened members are decent standup folks.

Some of of the opportunities are locked by having you be there start them which sucks, but there's a good chunk that don't like Helmut in the Paris level. You don't have to overhear that dialogue at all to find him and he actually has a set schedule independent from you that eventually leads him to talk with Dahlia.

Also the Minimal option is good because it tells you that they exist but still have to find everything on your own.

cause gameplay is pretty half and half so far. like all the small details theyve completely ignored or just quality of life things to make the game feel "harder" because thats totally what blood money was.

If you like this one but feel like you can't wait for the next levels to come out after finishing Paris, then the next game you should try is Blood Money - it's the most similar to Hitman 2016 in terms of overall design - the others are either a really hit and miss experience (the pre-blood money ones) where some levels are great but others are terrible, and Absolution is an okay stealth game but is a lot more like Splinter Cell than Hitman.

Jintor

Just turn opportunities off entirely. The game is designed well enough that most conversations will be obvious what the opportunity is, and there's a tab hidden away in your menu/select thing that will let you in on 'intel' without explicitly telling you what you need to do to activate the opportunities.

The only thing I think the game really needs to figure out better is a way to determine which enemies think you're suss without having to leave the white dot UI on.

So played Paris for a while doing like half of the challenges and then just got bored. Booted up Alekhine's Gun for the first time, and dude it just feels a lot better with the mission flow. Hitman doesn't have a flow, and at most I think this level really has in terms of like, novel experiences, is 1 hour or so.

Try Alekhine's Gun guys, its some nice classic stealth action. I guess I'll play 2 more hours of Hitman next month when the next ep comes out? Hitman series just became a boring CBS weekly show guys haha.

Having a lot of fun. gently caress whichever poster brought up the Blood Money sniper rifle case. I'd forgotten how great unpacking that thing was, and now there's a big gaping hole in the latest game.

A hole I'm tempted to fill with the silly costume I stumbled across in the attic and, I don't know, a fire axe. It'll have to wait til tomorrow.

Sticking with sniping for a sec, the "launch fireworks, snipe them both in 10 seconds" mission became a lot more tense when I couldn't immediately save afterwards, and had to avoid the guards. Going to have to track down the key for the boat at the back of the map, had to sheepishly backtrack to the helicopter. Thank god that didn't need a key.
