I bought a pair in an airport out of desperation (forgot my headphones when leaving my in-laws' house), they're comfortable and the isolation is good. They won't compare to the other recommendations here in the $20 to $30 range, but yeah, they're $7.

Just ordered my pair from Amazon since I already had other purchases to make. It'll be nice to have my playlist going at work again. :)

so a question about open vs closed headphones: I currently have a pair of HD 558's and if im playing music I can sort of hear stuff going on around me if I don't have my Fiio amp running with music at max volume. If I were to grab a set of closed headphones (say for instance, the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7's, do these simply "lock in" sound more and eliminate outside disturbances? I'm living with family atm and plan on heading into college sometime next year as that seems to be the key factor when it comes to Open vs Closed

Yeah, closed headphones isolate you from outside sound and leak less sound. They usually have better bass as well, but the sound stage takes a hit and they sound a bit less natural.

I don't understand why I can't harass people online. Seriously, somebody please explain why I shouldn't be allowed to stalk others on social media!
Please recommend me headphones.

Isolation Requirements I sit in an open office with 10 other people and i don't want to hear my officemate's disgusting coffee slurping, food/gum chewing, constant mumbling to themselves while reading, constant foot and pen tapping... I want it all gone.

Budget Ideally $150, but $200 is possible if justified. I can maybe go up to $250 if the difference between $150-$200 and $250 is "I can still hear my disgusting officemates but it's more muted" vs "holy poo poo it's like I'm sitting alone in a sound isolated room."

Preferred Type of Headphone Comfortable for ~8 hours of daily use. Also closed, so I don't bother my office with my lovely music.

Source Directly to my laptop at work and possibly my iPhone.
Preferred Tonal Balance Don't know. Don't care?
Preferred Music Little bit of everything but at work mostly random electronic mixes (mostly house) from Soundcloud. But also rap, indie, folk, pop, and occasionally the "two dudes talking" type podcasts.

Past Headphones Right now I'm using Brainwavz HM5. They're ok, and I think this thread recommended them at some point when they were on sale. They're a bit tight for my big head I think and get pretty uncomfortable. I'm wearing them now and I can hear myself typing (which is fine). I can also hear the guy about 4 ft from me slamming his keyboard and slurping his coffee.

I really don't give a poo poo about sound quality and audio tone or whatever. As long as I can plug it in and hear music and it doesn't sound like I'm listening to music in a wind tunnel it's fine. My #1 priority is not hearing my officemates disgusting habits, and being able to wear them for ~8 hour days comfortably. Wireless would be cool, but I could go either way. Also I don't think I specifically need active noise canceling headphones because I'm not sure if they'll work for the type of noise I want to cancel out, but I'm sure some headphones are padded differently and can passively reduce outside noise better?

Just received my new HD 598SEs, and holy poo poo. How have I lived without this for so long? Even through the lovely Logitech PC speakers I have at work they sound incredible, and are so unbelievably comfortable compared to the Monoprice budget cans I've had for years. Deceptively light and the cups are plenty large enough that they just fall around my ears without me having to wiggle any bits inside. Just barely enough pressure to keep them against my head, unlike the Monoprice cans that are like putting my head in a vice after about an hour of use. Minimal sound leak at comfortable listening levels, too.

I would recommend being careful about the sound leak from open headphones.

The 598s aren't particularly bad, but I took them to work and a random dude complained about them. So I guess some people are more sensitive about the sound leakage than others.

But overall the leakage is nothing compared to like, the X2s, which leak so bad that the drivers may as well be pointed outwards.

I've had the regular 598's for a little bit more than a month, and they've been really great. If I try on my old HD280s now, it feels like it's gonna cave my head in. And the HD280's sound so muddy compared to the 598s.

The only "problem" I've had with the 598s is that it's too clear and I can't listen to music without some breaks in between.

That depends on your crossfeed settings, but it does tend to attenuate the high frequencies and boost the low frequencies slightly.

Hey everyone. I am looking for a recommendation/maybe some clarification about open-back headphones. After doing a little bit of research the AKG Q701s, K701/702s and the Audio Technica ATH-AD7/900xs look like what I am leaning towards. Can anyone clarify the difference between these models within their brand's line up? Like Q701 vs K701, etc. I am also totally unopposed to suggestions from Grado, Sennheiser, or perhaps even spending a bit more to move up to higher tier stuff like the HE400s.
For a reason I will detail below, I am thinking about an entry level amp as well.

A quick run down of what I am looking for:
Budget - Around 200 USD. The 900x seems to have dropped in price/is on sale for about 150$ USD, which seems like a steal to me.

Source - My source situation will likely be my television set up. I live in a small apartment in Japan, and having even a moderately loud speaker set up is kind of out of the question.
I am hoping to get some open headphones to be my main output for things like listening to music and console gaming. I currently do not have an amplifier of any kind, and am running computer speakers through the headphone out and it makes me cringe. Will running a small headphone amp through the headphone out make any difference? Is there such a thing as an inexpensive amp that will take optical or hdmi in? Would that even make a difference? I have always tried to circumvent headphone out whenever possible. I want to eventually get a proper amp set up but as I said, the amount of money I would pump into a system is kind of moot because of my inability to make noise in my apartment. However, with the amount I may end up spending to get a small amp/dac to function the way I want it to, I might be able to find a decent second hand full sized amplifier and just run out of that.

Isolation Requirements - No.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear, open back. Comfort is important as I will be wearing them for sessions of a few hours at a time.

Preferred Tonal Balance - I really value accuracy and detail in the soundstage, but because I want to use these potentially as a speaker replacement for gaming as well as music, a bit of kick in the mid/lows would be nice as well for a bit of impact. Fatiguing highs may be, well, fatiguing for long gaming sessions.

Past Headphones - My last pair of cans were the Sennheiser HD 280s. I still have them kicking around but the pads have completely deteriorated and drop flakes of the pleather coating everywhere. The only open headphones I ever used were Grado S60s like 15 years ago in high school (I was that kid). I loved the soundstage of the Grados and think the brand is super underrated, at least for their price. Not opposed to going Grado again by any means.

Preferred Music - Almost everything. Primarily subsets of "rock" music, hip hop, jazz, and electronic. Almost never classical, or purely vocal/acoustic music. But, again, these will be used primarily as a speaker replacement so the bulk of the time they will be used for gaming. Movies I will probably go back to using my speakers when watching with my spouse. As I said above, a little punchier low end would be nice, but the notion that more bass = more better was beaten out of me by my father at a young age.

The set up I am imagining is as follows:
TV`s optical out -> FiiO E17-> ATH AD900x. Thoughts?

I'm just a total piece of shit and I'm not sure why I keep posting on this site. Christ, I have spent years with idiots giving me bad advice about online dating and haven't noticed that the thread I'm in selects for people that can't talk to people worth a damn.
I know absolutely gently caress all about headphones and so forth and have been using $15 IEMs from best buy that break every year and a half or so, but finally decided i wouldnt mind upgrading a bit now that i can

so I really want two different things - a set of wireless headphones for home

Budget - I'd love to get them for like $50-60 but I have no idea if a wireless set is even slightly reasonable at that price. I could go up to $100
Source - I have a z5500 speaker system that is connected to my computer through optical, for some reason (Ive had this setup for a hundred years). I dont think this thing amplifies
Isolation Requirements - no, this is in my house with absolutely no surrounding noise
Preferred Type of Headphone - over ear, supra-aural probably
Preferred Tonal Balance - balanced is fine, i dont think i'll appreciate anything specifically toned
Past Headphones - i had a pair of wireless sennheisers about 10 years ago and loved that they were wireless so im trying to relive the glory days
Preferred Music - probably 60% indie/alt, 30% electronic, 10% anything else

and a set of bluetooth IEMs for the gym/on the bus but mostly on the gym

Budget - Again, no idea if you can even get reasonable BT ones for cheap. $50-100? do they even come cheaper?
Source - ipod
Isolation Requirements - gonna be at the gym so yes, id like them to be pretty isolated
Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM
Past Headphones - no real thoughts here, sadly

one thing i did note about some IEMs i saw is that they had ear clips - those drive me nuts. id prefer to let the connecting wire, if there is one, just hang around my neck or whatever, and ideally as little baggage or stuff attached as possible

If the optical works fine for the FiiO, that setup should do you fine. You'll love those cans much more than your old HD280s :)

Either way, the ATH-AD900xs don't actually require all that much juice to run! A smartphone could do it. If your TV has a headphone jack you might even be able to get away without the amp—so you may want to just get the headphones first, then get the amp if you really need it.

For a reason I will detail below, I am thinking about an entry level amp as well.

Here's a brief comparison between the different AKG models. These are notes from my research online, the only ones I've actually heard is the Q701's and I do own K7XX's.

K701 - The original model for this line, slightly bass-recessed compared to the other models. Has the super uncomfortable headband bumps.

K702 - The "pro" version of the K701, and now comes with a detachable cable but still has the bumps on the headband. Sound signature is apparently brighter, but more or less the same.

K702 Anniversary - Slightly different sound signature from the original K702. Comes with memory foam velour earpads (also found in the K7XX which is super comfortable). No more awful headband bump.

Q701 - Slightly bassier K701/K702 and has Quincy Jones branding and some loud colour schemes. The headband bumps are back though, and they're loving painful after an hour or so from my experience.

K7XX - Pretty much the same as the K702 Anniversary, but made in China. Probably the best bang for your buck in this line. I've owned these for about a month now and I'm really liking them.

K712 - Former AKG flagship, apparently smoother and increased bass over all the other models in the entire line. Made in Austria and pretty drat expensive. I'd skip this and get a K7XX instead.

As for the AD line from Audio Technica, I do own the original AD-700 and the AD-900x.

AD-700 - Great midrange, really works well for female vocals. Huge soundstage, great for gaming. It all depends on your head, but I find the wing system to be super comfortable. The velour earpads are super comfortable too. Bass is present, but definitely a lot more recessed than probably most open headphones out there. Other than the bass and some slight sibilance, one of the major downsides of is that it's ugly as gently caress.

AD-900x - Got to be honest here, I was pretty disappointed when I got these. Build quality is a lot less solid than the AD-700. Looks like they cheaped out on a couple of things when switching the manufacturing to China. The earpads are this scratchy cloth material instead of velour and they're smaller and thinner. The headband wing system is like a bootleg creaky version of the original wing system with a lot less padding. Another thing is the cable is super stubborn, definitely a lot worse than the originals. In terms of actual sound quality though. The bass is actually there now, much fuller bass than the AD-700. Mid-range is still great, but the soundstage is slightly narrower than the AD-700. I'd say it slightly sounds better than the AD-700 because of the better bass and treble. However, I still prefer the original AD-700 because of my various issues with the build.

You also don't really need an amp for the Audio Technica's so you can potentially save some money there. You're also in Japan so you can probably walk in to a store and listen to all the headphones above fairly easily, no?

Man, the Q701's are super comfortable for long wear to me. Maybe it's cause I have really thick hair?

From what I've read measurable differences between sound on the various 70x series cans is almost negligible. I've read otherwise about the 7XX and don't know anything bout the 712's. My Q701's are definitely bright, but I don't find them fatiguing in games. I recently started listening to them with a bit of EQ to tone down the brightness/bring up the bass and I loooove the way they sound now. It took me from thinking about replacing them to thinking they're pretty well perfect.

Hello,

I too am looking for a good wireless headset for a roughly even mix of music, gaming and voice. I'm not 100% sure if this is the right thread for that kind of question. I'm willing to consider a wireless lapel mic/headphone combo instead of a singular headset. The wireless aspect is very important to me for numerous reasons.

Budget - If I have to, and if it turns out to be the best option, I would pay the $400 CAD for the Astro A50 from a decent supplier, but I don't really need something that fancy; the Logitech G930 at $100 on sale was great except for the iffy wireless and depressingly breakable construction.
Source - PC. Most likely USB since that's how most of the wireless options work, though I did have a headset which went through analog outputs to an externally powered radio transmitter once upon a time which was pretty cool.
Isolation Requirements - Not super important. My apartment is pretty quiet and I don't need to hear external things while I'm using this. Ideally yes since my walls are paper-thin.
Preferred Type of Headphone - I was kinda hoping for something neckband-style since I am a klutz but wireless + decent sound + neckband style seems to not exist so I'm not that picky, though this is for home use so on-ear or over-ear is probably best.
Preferred Tonal Balance - Bass-heavy would be cool.
Preferred Music - edm, dnb, etc.

I'm looking for general purpose music/gaming headphones in the $100-$200 range, source is my PC's onboard audio. Reading through the thread it looks like the HD598 is the favorite recommendation, but my problem is that velour is really itchy for me, and it doesn't look like pleather replacements exist. The ATH-M50x has pleather pads and seems well liked. How do they compare to the HD598 at a similar price? Are there other comparable options with pleather/leather pads available?

Constellation I

They're both pretty different, really. For gaming, the HD598 is a lot better because it's open and has a wider soundstage. The M50x's soundstage is pretty narrow, and since it's pretty flat, I don't find it good for gaming. Just isn't as immersive I guess.

Most of the headphones I'd recommend for gaming actually come with velour earpads, so I dunno. The Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro's could work for you. It's a closed headphone, but should be plenty immersive for gaming with its bass. It comes with pleather pads and a detachable cable so you can use a V-Moda BoomPro mic with it.

Bluetooth headset question! I have a best buy gift card to replace my LG headset (HBS-750) that crapped out. I have two replacement options

Tone Ultra (800) - has noise cancellation, but doesn't appear to play as nice with tone & talk (you can't hold down a button to repeat your last message or tell you the time). Previous generation I think

Tone Pro (760) - Next iteration of the 750. Does it play nice with tone & talk?

Which one should I get? I can see the 760 is one generation ahead of the 800. Can anyone tell me if one has better sound quality than the other? Anything else I should know?

Fuuck the cable on my ER-4s finally broke, luckily it's right in the jack so I should be able to just cut it off and replace it myself rather than sending it in for a $100 service. Well can't really complain too much, it lasted what, probably ten years of regularly use of getting stuffed in the case and pockets and twisted around the phones.

I might get a relative to forward to me the Samsung HS530 headset that was recommended earlier as a temporary substitute and vacation backup headphones. Would be interesting to compare to another, much cheaper BA device.

Also I remembered that I got my mom a pair of $10 Panasonic (HJA120?) 'phones a while ago so I tried them out when I was over. In isolation they sound ok but drat, compared to the ER4 they're clear as mud.

How bad is bluetooth audio latency when watching video? I have my computer hooked up to my TV and wanted to grab a pair of wireless bluetooth headphones for late at night. I don't care much about the sound quality but audio lag would be pretty frustrating.
