Life would be simple in the forest except for Cyril Sneer. And his life would be simple except for The Raccoons.

So I just came across this duo called Dance With the Dead and they instantly became my new favourite thing in synthwave. I do like the genre overall but a lot of it does really blend together just repeating the same tropes.

What these guys do differently is that their songs aren't purly based on the synths, but also some sweet electric guitar backing and leads, so it's kinda like 2/3 synthwave and 1/3 80s butt rock. Or maybe 3/4 and 1/4. It varies from track to track. But anyways, it's a fun mix and most importantly this stuff is catchy as all loving get-out.

I've been hopelessly hooked on their album Near Dark for a couple days now. Their other stuff is good too - especially their latest one, The Shape - but Near Dark is just, god drat it's so good.

This will definitely tide me over while I wait for the upcoming Perturbator album, and then some.

As someone who thinks the vast majority of synthwave is hot garbage, I'll give that you these guys do seem to bring a unique edge to the genre.

Thanks for reminding me of these guys, I'd forgotten I'd bought their Groupees bundle last year. The site's also got a synthwave bundle going on now, though I haven't heard of any of the bands.

Yeah I mean, I've heard other synthwave artists use some electric guitars occasionally, but I feel like DWTD do it differently. It sounds like the guitar and synths actually support eachother and the songs are actually built around that, instead of just having some throwaway solos somewhere. And overall it feels more like they have actual distinct songs, instead of just meandering aimlessly from one synth line to the next. For example, this song from their latest album is basically just straight-up pop rock that's just disguising as synthwave.

To me the album had the same problem that Mark Knight's album did--there's just not a ton on there for dedicated fans who have been buying all of his singles over the years. With that being said, I've been waiting for track 3, collider, since he first debuted it on his old radio show in like 2013 so that at least makes me happy. I was really excited for two debut albums from two absolute titans of progressive house to come out within a couple weeks of one another but was a little bummed to be already familiar with 90% of the material.

This is a fair criticism from someone who has been a fan for many years. I will be honest, I only started getting really into dance music in 2010-2011, and then only really started digging into a lot of Prydz's collection recently so the album probably felt much fresher to me. On repeated listens though, I am starting to see your point. The songs that are amazing on the album were mostly singles that had already been released or played out at shows, and the rest of the tracks were solid, but don't really live up to the singles for me.

I just saw Prydz's EPIC 4.0 set in San Francisco about a month ago and it was incredible. I have never seen visuals like that before and it was a great set, he even threw in a bunch of Cirez D which was cool.

I am going to risk getting reamed here but it feels like this track would be more appropriate to discuss here than in the UK/Bass/Dubstep thread.

Seven Lions just released this super melodic dubstep remix of Ferry Corsten's "Beautiful". I know dubstep gets a bad rap but I think Seven Lions is on another world in terms of melody, sound design, and atmosphere in his tracks. This remix really takes me back to the "trancestep" that he became pretty well known for.

https://soundcloud.com/seven-lions/ferry-corsten-beautiful-seven-lions-remix

He also just released a new EP called "Creation". This EP has a wide range of tracks on it including house, electro, dubstep, and some poppier stuff. He mentioned that this EP has a lot of metal and acoustic influences which is what he grew up playing.

FWIW, I updated my hardcore rave playlist with a couple tracks from this thread, plus longer/better quality versions of a couple existing songs. I've plumbed the depths of Discogs/YouTube/Ishkur's Guide over the past couple of years, and this playlist reflects the most intense/catchiest/most iconic rave anthems of the early 90's:

Of course, even more in this exact style would be most welcome! :D Check back a few pages for stuff already suggested, though.

Also, a great mix from '93:

I liked Audio Video Disco substantially more after giving it more chances, but still, this makes more excited than AVD ever did. That string-synth line reminds me a lot of D.A.N.C.E. but it's not exactly the same or anything.

That's awesome, definitely a throwback to D.A.N.C.E., they seem to be understanding that this is definitely geared for remixing and live shows as well.

Also, AVD is every bit as good as their first album, except for Parade. I'd even wager that the best songs on AVD are better than the best songs on Cross, namely Newlands and Helix.

100% guarantee there's a darker, harder remix of this being produced as fast as possible by like 40 amateur producers right now.

Perturbator's last two or three albums are really solid. Dangerous Days was what originally sold the whole synthwave thing to me.
Dan Terminus is pretty good.
Lost Years for something a bit more chill and very quintessentially 80s sounding.

It's an endless rabbit hole, really. Just dig around in the NewRetroWave channel on Youtube, there's more stuff there than you can ever hope to listen to. :v:

Check out Anjunadeep. They have an hour long podcast every Thursday with different folks on it. It can vary from week to week but generally speaking it's good downtempo deep house tunes. Every podcast is available on their SoundCloud. They also have compilation CDs available that you might be able to stream from Spotify.

Genre names are really really nebulous and not something to spend a ton of time worrying about. There is a difference between chillout and deep house in theory but deep house isn't deep house anymore and everything is getting really heterogeneous these days. Trance is usually much faster than anything labeled "house," which typically describes medium speed groovy/funky poo poo with a specific drum pattern designed to get the listener to wiggle and move. Deep house strips back the explicit danciness. Vaporwave is its own thing I think.
