to JERK OFF is to be close to GOD... only with SPURTING

So, that April Fool's joke from CIG about space food delivery... someone beat them to it by a week with a game actually named Space Food Truck.

Which has procedural generation. And good reviews from not-crazy people. And exists. And is $20 (AKA 1/15th of a Starfarer).

Unrelated, but did anyone ever notice what starcitizen.com points to?

To be fair, when I finally understood how to trigger the planet sounds in E:D, exploration took on a new aspect — that offered a pretty neat way of doing the whole “pick the planet to scan” gameplay without cluttering up the game with new mechanics and interfaces.

I'm curious as I only played the X-Wing series back then, but what did the Wing Commander series do wrong mechanically at the time? Were they just clunkier or were there more fundamental issues?

Basically. And, let's be honest here, the ship designs in WC1 and WC2 are incredibly ugly.

The core Wing Commander mission mechanic is that you fly between 1-4 nav points and destroy whatever you find there. Basically every mission is like this, although there is the occasional escort mission. WC3 and 4 may have complications mid-mission that change things up on the fly but this is quite rare.

There was a Freespace mod for Wing Commander (Wing Commander Saga) that did their best to recreate literally every aspect of this gameplay - even downgrading elements of Freespace and staples of that engine to make it more similar to Wing Commander. All it did was make it apparent how badly WC's missions had aged.

Any good soldier - which Alpha One is - will have some degree of positive effect on the war. But, ultimately, what's the result of passing that infuriating Bearbaiting mission? The Colossus just gets destroyed a few days later by another juggernaut and very little changes as a result. I think it was Battuta who did a great write up on FS2 as a story of apocalyptic hubris in the face of a hostile universe, which isn't nearly the heroic 'World War 2 In Space' feeling you get from Wing Commander.

I like to keep up this conversation because it's either this, or Ben Lesnick's absolutely sad devotion to a bad game and bad movie.

The thing is, the player and in the game, you are under the impression that the Sathanas is as valuable and unique as the Colossus, the same way that there was only one Lucifer in the first game. The Lucifer caused so much destruction that the Colossus was made to combat such a threat if it ever would come back. You take down the Sathanas, the Shivans scatter, and we think it's such a great victory, we go right back into the nebula and start exploring and gas-mining, even with losing so many ships just to contain the threat.

Finding out later that there are well over 40 Sathanas class Super destroyers in completely uncharted space is pretty much the confirmation that everything was for nothing.

Freespace 2 was and is still loving awesome, and space games have a unique group of fans that like to keep it going, and the same can be said for poo poo like Wing Commander and Freelancer.

Didn't pick the ship with ion cannons? gently caress you, you fail.
Didn't instantly start flying in exactly the right direction? gently caress you, you fail.
Didn't instantly put everything you had into engines? gently caress you, you fail.
Didn't also put energy back into weapons at exactly the right time to have the ion cannons ready when you're in range? gently caress you, you fail.
Didn't have a 100% hit rate during the few seconds you were in range? gently caress you, you fail.
Oh you did all of that, huh…? Well, now you are in a 100% misconfigured ship in totally the wrong location to complete the main objectives. BWAHAHAHAHA SUFFER FOOOOL!

Through SC I discovered r/dereksmart. Additional losses incurred.

Through r/ds, I discovered the existence of a Derek Smart. Yields large dividends, continually.

Through Derek Smart I discovered SA forum. Have to read ~1000 pages and skim more. Moderate net gains.

Pay $10 to remain in SA discussion. Small loss.

Discover that Scott Manley posts here. Unexpected windfall.

Start following SA forum mere weeks before all this paaarp goes down, presumably for real. Auspicious timing, poised for major gains.

TOTAL: Money well spent.
