Some galactic defender you are, Space Cadet.
One thing I'm still trying to make sense of is EightAce's latest confirmation of Derek's current information. It would seem they are in complete agreement on things - and yet at last count they held opposing views on CIG cash reserves, with Derek calling the cupboard bare and EightAce saying they had more than enough cash to weather the year.

Cash more than anything else is determines the health of the concern, and if they truly are facing bankruptcy, Chris and Erin certainly aren't doing themselves favors in any future class action lawsuit by talking up their forward projections.

I'm still inclined to assume their cash is healthier than we suspect. If it isn't, then I will have to revise my opinions of them downward, which would amaze me in Chris' case and disappoint me in Erin's.

I recall that great destroy the star destroyer mission. Basically one gets stranded with a broken hyperdrive and needs repairs so you being pesky rebels start chipping away at it's defences by taking down it's repair convoy and escorts before destroying it.

I recall the actual destruction mission being amusingly brutal as I just tore a path to the SSD and single handedly taking it down (two fully charged quad bursts are the same as one torp) as the Y-wings were used as a fighter sponge.
Back in X-Wing they didn't have flags to make story critical ships invulnerable. I was bloody-minded enough to destroy the SSD Intrepid about seven times single-handedly in that campaign, only for it to be reborn for the next mission in the quest to gradually "destroy" it. The whole campaign might have been elaborately pointless but at least my pilot got a chest full of medals.

The thing is, the player and in the game, you are under the impression that the Sathanas is as valuable and unique as the Colossus, the same way that there was only one Lucifer in the first game. The Lucifer caused so much destruction that the Colossus was made to combat such a threat if it ever would come back. You take down the Sathanas, the Shivans scatter, and we think it's such a great victory, we go right back into the nebula and start exploring and gas-mining, even with losing so many ships just to contain the threat.

Finding out later that there are well over 40 Sathanas class Super destroyers in completely uncharted space is pretty much the confirmation that everything was for nothing.

Freespace 2 was and is still loving awesome, and space games have a unique group of fans that like to keep it going, and the same can be said for poo poo like Wing Commander and Freelancer.

Sadly I couldn't save the collosus... or myself cause I was trying to escorts one last civilian transport ship. neither of us made it out of the capella system. It was a sad day.

Yes-- I understand that and I recall Derek's counter that lies about cash were being circulated internally at CIG. But what if Derek's source is misinformed not EightAce's?

I still feel like we'd see a host of telltale warning signs if they were in a nose dive. I can't shake that feeling-- and we are watching them incredibly closely. Why aren't there more sirens going off?

I know the weakness here is that I'm assuming the principals to be somewhat rational actors, which may be erroneous.

I'm assuming Sandi is not so COMPLETELY out of touch with reality that she'd really join her community team in recording a green screen video that is the equivalent of fiddling while Rome burns if Rome was, in fact, burning.

I'm assuming Chris and especially Erin wouldn't go on record talking up the amazing things around the bend when SQ42 releases and the PTU gets a couple more revisions. I mean Chris has hardly ever been more hubristic than he was in the latest subscriber edition with his Rockstar comments. They don't talk like people soon to lose everything, become complete gaming pariahs, targets of lawsuits and unstable fans, and subjected to the most merciless journalistic grave dancing and schaudenfraude since Ion Storm.

They talk like everything is progressing according to plan-- like they believe it.

i can't remember if you agreed or not - but i think the only real "tell" out of any of the videos recently that something was amiss was the weird one with Lesnick, Lando and Chris. everytime i see it i think Lesnick is either very physically unwell (a total possibility) or extremely miserable about something. Lando is nearly outright hostile at points. Chris was the only one maintaining his usual status quo - and Lesnick looked angry at him for doing so.

but yeah, other than that i agree; the output from CIG has been very business-as-usual. of course, it's awful - but it's par for the course for them.

You should see it without the restrictions imposed by the strangely-coded AI. In retail FS2, most ships had limiters when the AI was piloting them - they couldn't fire their weapons as fast as the game said they should, they couldn't fire more than like four turrets at once, ships couldn't maneuver on a vertical axis to evade fire... You should see a capital ship battle with a flak screen with those restrictions lifted.

The idea that CIG (would have) run out of money this last December but saved themselves with a completely unanticipated push of buggy code and ship sales is about as absurd as the idea that they spent the next several months carrying on as though everything was totally normal and talking about S42's progress a few days before the company is going to be forced to close its doors due to being 'literally out of money'.

Unless I missed the "they are out of money right now" revision to "the coming months" in one of the pages that I super skimmed.
