So, with this battle system alone, I'd be interested in a new Star Ocean, but the only report on the combat seems to suggest the combat engine isn't so good after all.

And yeah, the hosts for Uncovered were god awful.

Don't play higher difficulty levels on any Tales game older than Graces. They're either balanced for NG+ or not balanced at all. And even then Graces and Zestiria require grinding if you stay on the highest at all times.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
I did hard and then the one higher than that on Zestiria without bothering with the crafting system. The game's difficulty is more about the grade system, honestly because if you don't give a poo poo about grade (boss grade is meh compared to farming), then most bosses die to stunlock from Aqua camping.

I know this is a thread mostly for JRPGs but I got a question about underrail because I don't know if it had a dedicated thread.

Am I making a huge mistake by ignoring stealth? because these quests seem to want me to try stealth.

You definitely won't understand twewy's battle system in the first 2-3 hours. Some don't even figure it out even after completing the game.

Tactics Ogre: WTF is Cistina's deal. Why does she charge a dragon with 10 HP and get herself killed instead of doing literally anything else? Why is her death arbitrarily a mission failure condition when your own units can lie on the ground for three whole rounds without actually dying? Who's the person who keeps thinking escort missions with suicidal AI is a great idea?

Not defending TO:LUCT's escort missions (you will have some REAL FUN with those if you take the chaos path :suicide: ) but you can manage that mission by stripping someone naked so they get a billion turns and using them as a distraction. I used Vyce because he's a dickbag and it was fun to watch enemies kill him repeatedly, but it's probably more efficient to do it with Canopus and have him fly over and use a lobber to toss healing herbs at Cistina.

I managed it on my third time, mostly because I was lucky enough that Cistina stayed in range of my knights and cleric until most of the enemy was dead. :v: Other than that mission I've been having a real blast with the game thus far, and I'm especially digging the writing.

I wouldn't say that entirely. You can do that for a lot since you don't need to play into the minigames on the top, but even still just dividing attention between the two screens isn't something a lot of people can grasp for a while. That's partly why telling people the "focus on the puck" attention strat is okay because it helps you play better not because of any mechanics, but just as a tip on how and where to put attention. Putting it all in the bottom screen isn't going to work out all the time.

I really like Milla. It's also sort of appealing to have a Godlike figure in a JRPG whose response to humans is "haha, poo poo, you guys are pretty amazing, keep on keeping on, I'm here to help" as opposed to being distant and untouchable or evil and in need of slaying.

X has one of those, though! I believe you punch him right in the face.

My favorite antitheist video game on the planet is Tales of Destiny 2 because it posits a God who is actually omnipotent, omnipresent, and omnibenevolent, and the party decides this is terrible and all agree to murder her.

I liked that she had already got the whole human experience thing down academically, she just lacked any personal experience with it and things like eating, rather than bogging the story down with the done-to-death story beats like "what is this hoo-mahn thing you call 'love'?"

Maybe if they ever un-retire Maxwell again. I think coming back for Xillia was a special case.

Zestiria was also god-friendly to a fault; it basically said humans are hosed by their own nature in the absence of faith and/or actual grace. I have two mutually non-exclusive wild speculations that Berseria will involve freeing God from the subjugation of the bad guy, and that it ends with your new God being

this kid.

I can't think of any other JRPG or SRPG where it took me more than 30 minutes to an hour to figure out the battle system. 3+ hours coupled with a weird control scheme and less than interesting plot doesn't make a good game to me.

Well, the religion is Shinto - there was some stuff in the Tales thread a very long time ago on the implicit/philosophical parallels between them and the Five are all named after Shinto figures or concepts. But you certainly don't have to get that or care about it to feel like you do.

It's not exactly a lisp per se, but I think the recording session had some sort of weird thing going on with the mic, 'cause the actress's "s" sounds have a strange affectation to them. It didn't sound like a real lisp to me, more like a weird audio issue, kind alike what happened with the audio in FF12.

It's not the full on "lithp" that you'll sometimes hear. It's just some slightly squeaky "s" sounds.

Xillia 2 also had some stuff about humanity being inherently irrevocably hosed by it's own nature via the shinto concept of impurity as an amoral natural force (the miasma stuff). I really hope whatever comes after Berseria gets away from this as a thing.
