Probably the most exciting draw I've ever watched. Tonon put on a clinic, multiple back takes, and some deep as gently caress heel hooks I'm sure PH is gonna be feeling later (one he had to let go off because of OOB that might have been going somewhere).

Am I the only one who finds it crazy that there are still sub only events without tiebreakers? I enjoyed most of Polaris, but all 8 main card matches would've been way more interesting with the knowledge that there were overtime rounds at the end of them. Not saying they need to replicate EBI's rules exactly (they probably should), but gently caress, try something.

First one to touch the ground with anything but their palms or feet shall be declared a loser. 3 minute time limit.

In the event of a tie the winner will be determined by who can eat the most acai in sixty seconds.

I don't know what's the deal with Metamoris these days but I think the thing they did/do better was having a smaller main card and longer matches (20 minutes iirc). I would've liked 10 more minutes out of each of the top 3 matches.

It's a super weird non starter for normal people who are used to live sports, but one thing I enjoyed a lot about Lloyd Irvin's Kumite series was the format of the matches all being no time limit, but slickly edited down into highlights. It wouldn't work for every scenario but it's one way to make three hour long grappling matches watchable. I haven't rewatched it in years so my tastes may have changed as I've learned a bit more about grappling, but I remember it being pretty rad. Irvin is scum but I do wish someone would steal his idea for a less sketchy sequel.

Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xba4HKplHQA Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV9XemySmqo Part 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woCzjhHsjJA (not sure where Part 3 went) There's also some of the full matches uploaded. It was a pretty cool tournament, Irvin's scumminess aside. Still hilarious when the one guy taps out of frustration because his opponent kept using the forbidden technique of grabbing his hands.

Not saying they need to replicate EBI's rules exactly (they probably should), but gently caress, try something. I don't mind the Polaris/Metamoris approach. If they needed a winner I would rather they implement a judges decision rather than some arbitrary tie break position. Especially if near submissions are weighted heavily in the judges criteria. The thing about tie breakers is that most of the time it's easier to survive to the end of regulation time than it is to finish someone. So give people enough time and competition to adapt and you'll see people specialising in surviving and winning tie breaks. Look at what Joe Soto did in EBI IV, beating Martinez and Miyao at their own disciplines one after the other on account of being able to escape positions the quickest. It's a situation that happened in the FILA Wrestling styles after the 2000 Olympics with compulsory par terre in Greco-Roman and this ball grab/single leg position in Freestyle to determine round winners. It becomes a bigger and bigger part of the sport/focus of the tactics at the elite level and ultimately what decides winners at flagship events. It's the kind of thing that alienates the purists and the casual fans who turn up to see submissions and instead get to see the Ultimate Back Control Escape Championship.

Welp tonight I accidentally went night-night for the first time after trying to do a back door escape vs a baseball bat choke grip and ended up on top of the guys back which made the choke go in really really tight, rather than forcing him to let go of it. I woke up seconds later oddly refreshed with the sounds of the ocean in my ear. So a valuable lesson was learned.

Pocket Billiards posted:Ultimate Back Control Escape Championship. I see what you mean. Soto did highlight some flaws in the current system (for what it's worth EBI's monetary incentives mean he wouldn't have gotten paid for it had he won), but regardless I think that rule set is working in the right direction and can continue to evolve. If someone did manage to win with that strategy, successfully escaping back / spider web control nine times straight in one night without getting caught once would still be pretty impressive and more interesting than the dynamics of most of the recent Polaris matches. Even putting aside the part about "needing" a winner, it's fun to see high level grapplers get put in bad spots. If it means that everyone masters defending and escaping rear mount 1) good, because that's a super practical skill to have in bjj and even crossing over into other combat sports, and 2) maybe new positions in addition to those two could get introduced, giving the attackers new options. Maybe a triangle without the arm crossed over? The truck or some other semi-dominant leg entanglement? Something with a kimura grip? I don't know, I'd trust someone better at grappling to iron out the specifics. Tezcatlipoca posted:It's the hockey shootout argument. I barely know what hockey is, but D2 the mighty ducks strike back led me to believe that shootouts are a cool and good thing, and an ideal opportunity for the players to express their individual personalities (tough guy, cowboy, girl, etc.) Decades fucked around with this message at 04:00 on Apr 6, 2016 |
