---The Game--- MDK is a 1997 cult classic, third-person shooter by Shiny Entertainment, the creators of Earthworm Jim. The game shares its predecessor's bizarre sense of humor, adding a whimsical goofiness to what is today the tired genre of Sci-Fi shooters. Despite it or its sequel never being hot sellers, they are still beloved and respected by many to this day. As evidenced by JigglyJacob jumping onto our channel to share it with us. The story is such: (Copied from Wikipedia, because the game itself doesn't tell you this. You have to read it in the manual.) The story of the game begins in 1996 when inventor/scientist Dr. Fluke Hawkins believes he has made a revolutionary discovery; an outer space phenomenon he calls "Flange Orbits". However, when he approaches the scientific community with his discovery, he is ridiculed. Determined to prove his colleagues wrong, Hawkins builds a space station, the Jim Dandy, and bribes aboard his laboratory janitor, Kurt Hectic, by means of Hungarian goulash. He then launches the station into orbit, projecting that the mission will last five days. However, after a week, Hawkins realizes Flange Orbits do not actually exist, but rather than return to Earth in shame, he decides to remain on the Dandy to try to discover something, anticipating another week in space. Kurt is extremely unhappy with this development, but once Hawkins shows him how to program the VCR, he calms down. A year later, having made no discoveries, Hawkins begins work building a genetically engineered robotic dog, which he plans to call "Bones". After a year, Bones is fully operational, although both Bones and Kurt prefer the name Max. Despite having four arms and two legs, and being full of energy, Max proves more than a little reluctant to help Hawkins with the chores on the Dandy, proving more interested in tending to his vegetable garden. Another year passes without Hawkins making a breakthrough until he notices streams of energy moving through the Solar System towards Earth. He sends a warning down to Earth (along with some of Max's oranges), but is ignored. Upon reaching Earth, the streams disgorge gigantic "Minecrawlers", city-sized vehicles designed to strip mine the natural resources from a planet, crushing anything in their path. The aliens, known as "Streamriders", and under the command of Gunter Gluth, easily demolish Earth's military forces, and so Hawkins decides to take action to save the planet. Hawkins reasons the only way to fight the aliens is with his newly invented "Coil Suit", but due to his advancing years and Max's extra pair of legs, Kurt is the only one who can wear it, and, thus becomes the very reluctant hero. As such, Kurt is dispatched on "Mission: Deliver Kindness", entering the Minecrawlers from above, and destroying them from the inside-out. ---The LP---: This LP is played and hosted by our longtime friend JigglyJacob, with myself, Highwang, and starting in part 3 BigTUnit1 as his co-commentators. ---The Game--- MDK2 is the bigger and wackier sequel to the cult classic third-person shooter, this time developed by Bioware. The game expands the first's gameplay to include all three heroes as playable characters, each with their own unique and weird abilities, all framed by fully voice acted cutscenes brimming with silliness. The story is such: The game picks up almost exactly where the first left off. "Mission: Deliver Kindness" seemed to be going well, leading ultimately to the defeat of Gunter. But now there's a new big bad: Shwang Shwing, and he's got some bitchin' shades and a sexy, rumbling voice. As Shwang variously captures each hero for the first several chapters, it is up to original unwitting hero Kurt Hectic, cigar-chewing multi-armed robodog Max, and eccentric/improbable inventor Dr. Hawkins to all take the protagonist's seat and bring Shwang, his boss Zizzy Balloobba, and their whole home planet of Swizzle Firma to their knees. ---The LP--- This LP is played and hosted by our longtime friend JigglyJacob, with myself (ThornBrain), Highwang, BigTUnit1 and/or Mugiwara Yoshi as his co-commentators. Ah yes. I remember this as one of the first big "videogames are corrupting our youth!" stinks when it emerged that the game was going to be called "Murder Death Kill" and the ensuing renaming antics.

I never could get into the game since I couldn't read the manual for it. That combined with it's archaic control scheme and it's penchant for not explaining anything kept me from really getting far into, though the subtle Earthworm Jim-style humor certainly made it memorable. Good to see a proper run of Moist Dragon Kernals.

MDK got a patch that added quicksaves at some point (the Direct3D one? Actually, are you playing the DOS or Windows version?) I absolutely couldn't stand Mission: Deploy Kindness 2 apart from the music and the comic cutscenes.

I never got this because the Verge/Virge/vIRGE(sp?) video card in my pentium 166 had some weird render error that made some textures red and only red. I don't remember those ads very well but they seem a little intense given the fact that the game seemed pretty light in tone. I guess the marketers were really good at provoking the press to give them free publicity. More power to them. gently caress the press and their silly moral panics.

Back in the day I had the reverse opinion, but I went back and played them recently and maaaaaaaaan MDK2 doesn't hold up. It's also super obvious they got a different team to work on it

this is a great little game, one of the first uses of a sniper rifle, pretty sure the game came out before goldeneye. also it was very neat that they used a sprite for Kurt as that allowed them to get much more detail than if they had used polygons.

I remember there being a quicksave/quickload, and when you quickloaded it would restart the town-gets-run-over clock. I'm trying to figure out if Kurt is a sprite 90% of the time. His animation is so goddamn choppy and limited, and he's like a different level of detail than every enemy sprite.

WHAT?! You can strafe while sniping!? Good to see an LP of this game. Played shitloads of this, and some amounts of MDK 2 back in the day. I don't really remember anything anymore considering how long it has been, so most of the areas are fresh for me. MDK has so many small touches that work really well. Especially the little camera screens for sniper bullets always kept me entertained. Another part is how the music and ambiance change between areas. When you reach the area where you need to glide up on those fans in the first level the action-y music fades away there's some new ambient sounds. Unfortunately there isn't that much different music, but they make up for it with pretty good soundscape. The loading screens get old fast, but at least added variety for them. I didn't remember there were no checkpoints, but maybe I never really died. The game is pretty easy. Something that really could be done better is mantling up ledges. It seems to only work if you face the ledge with almost a perfectly perpendicular angle. Also, some of the platforming sections can get pretty repetitive. The section with the long hall and the cannons at its end in level 2 is one of those, if you fall down. It's neat how some enemies start bleeding and appear damaged as you deal damage to them, such as the "paper ladies".

I could have sworn that the boss fight was a lot more exciting, and that the Thumper was useful for something. I thought it cleared either the whole room or killed all ground enemies in a huge radius. That might have been the tornado, though. Also, did you forget to link the music video? I was kinda hyped for that. Edit: Found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISFXmukrQO4 Space Kablooey fucked around with this message at 19:40 on Apr 16, 2016 |

Oh. Looks like the Steam version doesn't have the music video, but the GOG version does (eventually, after people complained). Which is a shame, as topping off MDK with a music video, in French, with some bloke in a Kurt outfit stroking his helmet (matron), and the singer in her home-made ribbon-chute flying around on wires, with the enemies playing in the band really is one of the best, most jawdroppingly incomprehensible ways of ending a game I've ever seen.
