Looking back at the April Fools episode, you really feel for Squidward. Spongebob put Squidward in the hospital, drove him to suicide, and might've actually killed him a couple times, a little garbage is nothing in comparison.

I feel like at the beginning, Spongebob was very genuinely exuberant, even if to a degree that annoyed everyone around him, and then at some point it became all about him being an idiot goblin who everybody hates.

The april fools episode was a season 1 episode, back when Squidward was less sympathetic (if only by the fact that the other characters were more sympathetic) and the most screwing over happened in episodes where he was essentially hoisting his own petard (such as Opposite Day and Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost)

He IS partly to blame for the Squidward abuse, from what I understand. I mean, he goes out of his way to defend The Splinter on Twitter,so he's a few bees short a hive.

That's kind of the problem with a reboot. I think the episodes were easily better than the average episode of the original series but also no where near that show when it was at its best. For awhile it's going to have to be held up against an entire series remembered in the best possible terms. It can have perfectly fine episodes but that won't really seem like enough until it justifies itself.

Also it's weird that they seemed to have replaced all the women and kept all the men. I honestly sort of wish they had replaced the men too because hearing the new and old side just has a weird dissonance.

I don't entirely remember the splinter (though I know why it's hated) and I don't think it was a squidward torture porn episode

Kinda a moot point now, as there was a 2nd exodus of writers and boarders before and during the 2nd movie

It goes to show how important outline writers are, as Aaron Springer was the main boarder for both Band Geeks and House Fancy (the squidward's toenail episode)

I've heard that the 2nd movie was good and that the episodes produced after the 2nd movie are good (by post movie standards). But yeah things started getting dire during season 4 (though early season 4 was good)

Did anyone ever watch the canadian show "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High"? I watched it online a few years ago and enjoyed it despite where things just get silly, because it has a decent sense of worldbuilding and some fun twists. The Janitor was a fun character with moments of personality beyond generic mysteriousness and I liked where all the seeds came to fruition, like the Palladium floor in the science room and the Frictionless Chi ball.

Also the episode where Lucas gives himself x-ray eyedrops had an inspired twist. He uses his x-ray vision to break into the shady scientist's office to locate the macguffin, only to bark his shin on a table and realise he didn't see it at all. His xray vision has become so potent he is seeing through everything - he is legally blind. He fumbles his way to the phone and calls his friends for help.

I remember watching that show in the US a while back when Discovery had a Saturday morning block on a network iirc. I recall CN actually making something similar during their bizarre live action period. It only lasted a season but it showed a lot of promise.

Fake edit: it was NBC's Saturday morning block that was a partnership with Discovery.

Actual edit: It was Tower Prep and it was created by Paul Dini.

Nickelodeon is horrible with scheduling, partially due to a retarded policy they have where any given show can only have ~20 new episodes premiere in a single year(it's why Power Rangers has had really bad pacing for most of it's existence since coming to Nickelodeon for example)

It's because they halted production of season 9 when the 2nd movie went into production: The first 11 half hours primarily aired (and were all produced) from 2012-13 (with some stragglers in 2014, including one that wasn't aired until shortly after the 2nd movie) while the remaining 15 are airing from 2015-16.

Why do I know so much about spongebob production when I haven't seen the show myself since 09 :psyduck:
