No Mods No Masters posted:This is like third hand so don't take it for gospel, but my understanding is that goons can't pull the people to do strats like that anymore. The overwhelm with lovely ships thing only works when you can actually field more ships than the other guy I played around the same time and I remember the goons mainly being about trolling, and was just then shifting into taking and holding territory. It was before the war with BoB and all that. I'm guessing it's more like, everyone playing has been there for years and is filthy game-rich, so the swarm thing doesn't make much sense. The goons back then were also really into recruiting drives and I just don't see that now. BrutalistMcDonalds fucked around with this message at 05:09 on Apr 8, 2016 |

Wikkheiser posted:But wouldn't just destroying a single capital ship still be worth the cost of a fleet of lovely ships? Pretty much. The problem is that the ability to produce both ISK and goods has grown exponentially since the “old days” — rebuilding fleets is entirely trivial, including capships. Once you get into supercaps, it may sting a little since they require different production facilities, but it's still too brief and/or too easy to overcome and compensate for to really matter. Killing an expensive ship with a shitfleet mattered when having that expensive ship meant something; when acquiring one was an actual obstacle and achievement to overcome. Now? Just buy a new one. At that point, it pretty much entirely becomes a matter of trust and morale: are you willing to field your expensive ship because it's for a good cause and because you trust the corp/alliance to value the contribution (and preferably reimburse it)? So if they're fielding expensive ships, blowing them up with crap ships mainly just means you're deliberately crippling yourself, and for little good reason. If they're not fielding them, then it's because morale is low, and your choice of ships no longer matters — they're already in a downward slide.

Wikkheiser posted:But wouldn't just destroying a single capital ship still be worth the cost of a fleet of lovely ships? One really funny thing about this war is the anti-goon side is partially funded by some ridiculously rich weird man who runs the big ISK gambling website. There's rich and then there's rich I guess. The goon identity has definitely been diluted a lot which is a big source of angst in the alliance I think. People in the eve thread were speculating that they don't want to do a big loud recruitment drive on SA because it might pull in embarrassingly few people and hurt morale even more. In the end I think it's just demographics, reddit is the modern place to mass recruit degenerates
