Not sure if there are many in this thread that would appreciate Haken, given the totally justified comparisons to Dream Theater, but I've been following them since Aquarius came out and they're probably Top 10 for me (along with Gorguts ). Their new album Affinity is fantastic. The Architect and 1985 stand out in particular for being loving prog masterpieces. 1985 had me grinning like an idiot throughout, and one Europe-inspired synth interlude in the second half of the song had me laugh out loud. Good poo poo.

^Haken are cool because they're what Dream Theater might sound like with actual songwriting.

Haken is the best thing going on in prog rock right now.

Saw Metal Church last night, they owned. Mike Howe is an awesome frontman, and they have Chris Caffery from Savatage playing lead for them. Played stuff spanning the first 5 albums - Opened with Fake Healer, and remember them playing Beyond The Black, Start The Fire, Watch The Children Pray, In Mourning, Gods of Second Chance, Date With Poverty, No Friend of Mine, and the first 3 songs from the new album - Reset, Killing Your Time, and No Tomorrow. Encore was Badlands and The Human Factor. Saw opening bands Painmask, which was like groovy hardcore, and Hatchet who is a pretty cool thrash act. Hatchet's guitarists are really animated dudes on stage and put on a good show. 10/10 would drive 2+ hours for that again.

I randomly came across this band Alestorm. They're "Pirate Metal" and I can't believe it never dawned on me that that might be a thing. There's only a couple bands doing it and it seems like the most obvious thing in the world. I've always loved Viking metal and how it toes the line between being serious about Viking poo poo and being parody. Why isn't this a vibrant scene, especially after all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and such??

It's so vibrant that a lot of us hate it and think of it as a dumb gimmick, even more so than viking metal.

Pirate metal is extremely bad, and there's like three good viking metal bands, none of which are parodies(Bathory, later Graveland, maybe one or two others).

Abbath is seriously entertaining and well worth the travel and ticket cost to see. Skeletonwitch is a blast live. High on Fire is a snooze. The weakest band on the Decibel tour by a wide margin.

I'd be more down with Klezmarcore than pirate metal. I stopped getting Terrorizer around 2008 when all it was covering was viking and folk metal. I'll play Battle Metal about once every 6 months then it gets shelved again.
