The party’s caravan, with the addition of Jihae, has been traveling for days to the village of Haran located northeast of the village of Celik, but some time’s travel from the ruins of Kalidnay. He hasn’t spoken much, keeping all conversation strictly related to the business of returning the gods. Despite the nature of the conversation, he shares his hopes and goals with a sort of glee and optimism rarely heard in any Athasian conversation.

Around the nightly campfires, Jihae has shared his knowledge of the gods and the world before their departure with the party. He tells you that there were no seas of silt – rather flowing oceans of water, full of fish to catch and eat. The rolling dunes were once hills covered in flowers and trees. One night he becomes so animated in explaining the supposed location of a great forest that he nearly catches his robes aflame.

As the party continues to travel, his manner fades from gleeful to stoic. The night before arriving at Haran, he explains to you that he is accompanying you personally on this task in part to vouch for your presence at the village, and also to inquire to recent events on his own. Grimly, he informs you that he and his colleagues maintain a network of trusted messengers and scouts. The scout who was sent to this village has not made contact with himself or any of his colleagues in weeks – a highly unusual occurrence for this particular scout…

“All of our associates are fine folk, and keep in as regular contact as possible – but this particular youngster? We always know his locations and activities - whether we wish to or not, to be honest. This is truly unlike him to not even send word that anything was afoot. His unfortunate disappearance has come at a rather inopportune time. This village is of vital importance to us. There is a young boy there who is of great importance to our mission. Our scout was meant to collect him and bring him to me, but it seems we will have to do so ourselves. I do hope that no harm has befallen our scout…”

On that somber note, the party caravan arrives at the village the next midmorning. The village is nestled at the foot of a high mesa. Scattered around the outskirts of the simple hovels appear to be humanoid bones, picked and bleached clean. Here and there are corpses, with hollow bellies and gaping, empty mouths. The village is silent, beyond the sound of sand being blown against the hovels. Jihae’s face falls, and he simply whispers “oh, no…”

* Try to bold other characters' names if you are directly addressing them and need a response (to catch their eyes)
* Use orokos for your dice rolls, please!
* combat/other mechanical actions should be underlined -- example: move to a3 and attack enemy: atk:1d20+2: 18 dmg:1d8+2: 6 and do something else [bonus action]
* Please make sure you link every roll you make, preferably not with the bare url. You also don't need to post the raw rolls (the ones [in brackets] on orokos)
* Please roll damage at the same time you roll your attack to speed things up a bit. You can do this on orokos by using this syntax: 1d20+3;1d8-1 (edit: If you roll a critical hit (by rolling a natural 20), please roll the extra damage on a second roll on orokos without your added damage bonus (e.g. if your damage is normally 1d8+3, you roll just 1d8 for the bonus damage and add it to the total of the initial damage roll)
* Please post what you intend to use your reaction action for at the bottom of your post (BEFORE any footers). If you don't, I'm going to assume you want to use your reaction at the first chance to make an opportunity attack! NOTE: this is the normal use case of a reaction; if you just want to do this, you could elide it from your post (though I'd prefer you didn't! you could just put like [REACTION: 1st OA])

I'd also like every player to post in here with [s]their background,a link to their character sheet, and their player token. never mind, let's just get to it!

HP: 12/12 AC: 18 Hero Points: 2/2 HD: 1d10(+2 con)
Initiative: -1 Passive Perception: 9

Tara, silent as she is at most times, is enamored with Jihae's stories; absolutely foreign ideas being explained bringing a twinkle of joy to her dour eyes during the journey. More than once during the group's travels Jihae brings a gurgling laugh to Tara's lips with his animated explanations, a mixture of awe and disbelief over the grand ideas he is conveying overtaking her.

The group's arrival at Haran has the gladiator's heart drop a little as the husk of a village comes into view; she would have been lying to herself if she'd said that she expected find anything less than what was present, but the disappointment is still there.

Tara nods when Ja'eel makes his inquiry and hops down from her cart, walking back past her erdlu, she begins to rummage through her stowed goods. A brief thunk and a sharp clack ring out, and moments later Tara resurfaces with a hunk of petrified wood serving as a shield on one arm and a gnarled hunk of the same material with a myriad of sharpened bones embedded in it serving as a sword in the other.

Armed for whatever might still be lingering in the town, Tara moves to the front of the group, ready to lead them along the outskirts should they wish to survey the town at a distance.

Tara is happy enough to take point on a cursory loop around the outskirts, but she's not likely to actually see anything if a perception check is required :v:. Also she's a clanker so if there's someone hanging around they're goooonna hear her. As a counterpoint she's less likely to immediately die if there is an ambush and she gets pin cushioned :supaburn:.

Smashin' down the light.
Pillbug
Gentle Leviathan > 11 / 11 HP > 16 AC >
It had been some time since she had traveled with such a large group, and it was a rarity indeed to observe so diverse an ecosystem of creatures. Traveling with the elves of the desert was familiar to her, and oddly comforting, so she was thankful for the presence of the two that Jihae had managed to entice with his tales of a once-better world. She had some experience trading with the human tribes of the wasteland, but relatively little in comparison, and so their cultures were generally less familiar to her, which made social interaction a bit more awkward. The two of that species that Jihae had managed to recruit were likable enough, thankfully, although she did admittedly find their odor a tad acrid. As well, the half-man was wondrously exotic so far as she was concerned, and had so far proven remarkably practical in his worldview.

Though she dared not voice the thought out loud, mostly to avoid it being mistaken as an attempt for humor, she often found herself wondering how long Jihae's dream would hold water. The caravan had traveled without internal incident for quite a while now, but would their diversity ultimately prove to be a strength, or a weakness? She truly hoped the former, but doubt was ever her way. Could two elves, two humans, a halfling, and something else entirely ever truly become one pack? The elven tribes were often at odds with one another, and the human tribes were much the same, whether they were of the variety that traveled the land or walled themselves off from it. Halflings, as she believed they were called by most, had an even sourer reputation for their limited ability to cooperate with those outside their bloodline. Even on a raw, elemental level, much of the group seemed in opposition to one another. Could earth, fire, and water work together towards a common good? Or were they doomed to be perpetually juxtaposed, unable to find common ground? They were questions with little merit, for her traveling companions had proven nothing if not palatable so far, but the question still begged to be asked. She wondered, were the others asking themselves the same thing? And if so, did that make them more alike, or simply prove how different they already were? Either way would be an irony beyond measure.

Of course, she had seen the exception proven time and again in her life, and so she had cause to hope. The wasteland had accepted her, rather than reject her, and for many years that had been good. She was different from the rest of the pack that had adopted her, and it had made them stronger. Indeed, perhaps the ultimate demise of her pack lord was to be a sign that there was, in fact, not strength in uniformity? Had they not all shared the same tactics when hunting, the same instincts when traveling, they might not have fallen into an elven trap. It is a simple thing to know one's enemy, when that enemy is merely one thing. But who in this land could predict the actions of something so undefinable as fire fueled by water, and emboldened by earth? Of elven grace tempered by human ingenuity, and the practicality of a half-man? Indeed, if they could truly learn to trust one another, to act as a single pack with a guiding purpose, it was possible that much could be accomplished. It was, in fact, even likely. So long as the terrible unlikelihood of their long-term cooperation was ever first overcome.

During their journey so far, Jihae had been that unexpected and invaluable unifying force. A human trader had told her the name for the concept once, years ago. 'MacGuffin', she believed it was? Something that triggers a greater end, and but for which no great thing might have ever been set into motion. She was curious where the name had come from, though at the time had never thought to ask. She did know, however, that protecting the unifying force of Jihae was currently a priority. Without him, they might falter and part ways before the extraordinary could be accomplished, and before their trial could even begin. Although she didn't truly view him as a pack leader, given his personality, she did understand that he was important in this way. It was his continued existence that allowed the pack to form to begin with, and in time the leader would thus emerge. She looked forward to that, the comfort of it all, the accompanying surety of purpose. It had indeed been far too long.

Jihae’s face falls, and he simply whispers “oh, no…”
It was a midmorning like any other in the wasteland, though she could tell that Jihae was unprepared for it. Hope had a way of raising a man up, only to allow him to fall further. Yet perhaps if one raised high enough, they might eventually fly? She supposed the question was neither here nor there at the moment. Rousing herself from her thoughts, she begins to take in the situation, knowing they may have wandered closer to danger than they had intended.

Any number of ill fates could have befallen this settlement, and it was impossible to know by merely observing from afar. Was it a disease, she wondered? A wasting sickness was hardly a rarity, and if it went undetected for too long, a tipping point may well have been reached before the resources of the settlement could be mustered to deal with the threat. A predator was also a possibility, of course, though she didn't see any tracks among the remains, which would have been typical if the place had been beset by the more voracious and less patient things of the wild. More importantly, it was unusual for corpses to be picked clean, yet left relatively intact. Whether predator or scavenger, it was typical for bodies to be torn apart, with choice pieces being devoured first, and any individual body being scattered dozens of feet in several directions before the meal was done. Perhaps that was merely the way of her pack, and those she had observed, but it struck her nonetheless. Were she to wager, she would hazard that what happened here was far from natural in origin, were it a predator. Doubly so given the seemingly unharmed, if worse for wear animals penned further into the settlement.

Which left an unnatural predator ...or completed the circle all the way back to a perfectly natural disease. This was indeed how a scene might play out if a disease ravaged the settlement. Most scavengers would pick up on the scent of it, and know to avoid it enough that the remains would not be strewn about the area. Had the people of this village merely laid down and died? The same might be true if their source of water had been suddenly lost, she supposed. With nowhere to go and nothing to do about it, it wouldn't even require a disease for the majority to simply succumb to the elements. Yet still, the enduring presence of their cattle suggested the water source had not in fact vanished.

What kills a caretaker, but leaves those in its care? She wonders this to herself for a few moments. No predator she was aware of, and no natural disaster, be it a sandstorm or an unexpected drought. That left a disease which harmed the caretakers and left the cattle unharmed ...or perhaps left them as carriers. Either of which was, admittedly, not unheard of ...or a sentient and intentional application of force. Too many questions, and too few answers, she knew. She waited patiently for the discussion to evolve around her.

It surprised her not even a little that the pair of humans were the first to act. In her time with the nomads, she had learned that the elves saw their kind as impetuous, even careless. In her time since, she had come to understand that they saw themselves as able learners, and well-rounded individuals gifted enough to tackle a wide range of challenges. The truth, in her opinion, was somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.

Nonetheless, there was wisdom in the first man's words, and she was thankful for it. He seemed less than eager to rush in headlong, and the female of the species was ready to take on any threat that presented itself. A fine match, and a rather endearing response, she had to admit. She offers some counsel in the trade tongue, "A cautious route around the area would have my support. We should search for the telltale tracks of predators or any sentient race that may have done this, though the former would surprise me for reasons that would take too long to explain. Be wary of getting too close to anything. I believe I see still-living livestock in one of their pens, which seems to suggest neither dehydration nor something so mundane as a haboob caused this devastation. In which case, the cause may well have been a truly unpleasant disease. If we complete our circuit and nothing reveals itself as an imminent danger, I would suggest we consider entering from the east, and approaching those surviving creatures to see what legacy their caretakers may have left with them."

Tazoc Ichtaca
HP: 10/10 AC: 16
Hit Dice: 1 Hero Points: 2/2

Jihae's stories only confirmed Tazoc's understanding of the world: the People's Stories did not lie, after all. There was once a great, verdant forest, oceans with waves as tall as any man, but now it seemed that Nature had seen reason to abandon those who would need Her the most. It was a real tragedy, and hearing the tales from someone else only strengthened his resolve to see their mission through.

--

The group arrives at the now deserted village. Dead bodies, animals left to starve; and what about that boy, and the scout Jihae mentioned? Where they, perhaps, among those who perished here today?

With crossed arms, he watches the group quickly make their plans.

"I'll stay here and keep watch over our aquatic friend. The rear-guard can often be as important as the front lines. Besides, if those animals do die on our watch, they can't go to waste." He recalls the Story of Tazoc Okanan, the Man who Ate His Neighbor's Livestock, with a grin. Ah, the tales he'd be able to tell this band! What Stories he had to share! For now, he had to be quiet and let the genasi concentrate on the ritual. After that, though, all bets were off.

Obsidian, Guardian Spirit of the Dune Sea
[HP: 10/10][AC:17]
[Hit Dice: 1d8][Hero Points: 2/2]

As they proceed through the wasteland, Obsidian listens to Jihae, but he listens even more carefully to the Song of the Earth. Moreso than what one man thinks about the long-extinct gods, he wants to know whether Jihae's claims are concordant with what the eternally-existent Earth has witnessed. So far, though, apart from perceiving snatches of the Song at seemingly random intervals, he gains no further insight into Jihae or the nature of those divinities he wishes to resurrect.

****

So much death, Obsidian thinks to himself as he spies the remains of Haran and its people. So much needless death. Brought out of his reverie by the others springing into action, Obsidian leaves his kank behind and accompanies Haffanu. As they skirt the village to climb the mesa, he sweeps his gaze over the buildings, the corpses, and -- perhaps most interestingly -- the animals, still alive, in their pen. As they proceed, he attempts to divine the nature of the disaster that befell the village.

Since Ja'eel and Tara are circling to the west in order to end up at the animal pens, Haffanu and I will go the other way around to get to the mesa. I presume this will take multiple rounds, so I'm exploring several options as we make our circuit and start our climb.
Is there anything noteworthy from a distance? Any survivors not obvious initially? Or any critters waiting to ambush us? Perception (Wisdom): 1d20+5 16.
After my initial suspicious glances at our surroundings, I'll probably be relying on Passive Perception (at least until we have a commanding view from the top of the mesa), because I also want to know:
Are there any natural phenomena could have caused the destruction of the entire village in this fashion? Nature (Intelligence): 1d20+2 20
Are the animals behaving normally for kanks/erdlus/whatever? Are they scared, hungry, enraged? Do they look like they're diseased or otherwise physically impaired? Animal Handling (Wisdom): 1d20+5 19

I'm saving my own Detect Poison and Disease until we move into the village and I'm within 30' of the corpses/water supply/animals -- though by then GL may be done with his ritual and able to do the detecting instead.

No critters are immediately obvious - however in the hut directly facing the fire pit, a human-looking shadow appears, waving its arms. The shadow is attempting to whisper loudly, but it's hard to discern what it's saying.

You notice that the corpses that have not fully decomposed or been picked clean seem to have been relatively healthy people...once. The bones are clean, and seem to have many scratch marks on them. There are no signs in the village that any sort of disease has struck - no bodies are burnt, no graves were dug.

The carru are lethargic and appear to have lost weight - not enough that bones have become visible, but enough to cause alarm. At the moment they are attempting to eat some dry shrubs growing near the mesa foot, but seem unsatisfied with this option. Surely no handler worth his salt would allow his herd to be in such a state - suggesting that the handler has surely perished.

Getting the feeling that the man isn't intending to ambush him, Ja'eel taps Tara with his hand and nods towards the man, hoping she'll follow. He walks over to him, keeping a strong grip on his spear and glancing cautiously into the houses that he passes as he approaches. Once he's close enough to the man to speak normally, he asks, "Why must we come inside? What threat is out here that attacks man and yet not his beasts?"

You see a few stragglers. A young woman and man huddle in the back of their dwelling, crying quietly. In another appears to be a teenaged boy - his face is tear streaked and he is visibly quivering. All of them recoil in fear as Obsidian peers into their homes.

Jihae smiles gently and sighs. "I appreciate your forethought, young lady, but this man is a friend. He seeks only to protect us." He moves forward, boldly, towards the waving figure.

As you reach the top of the mesa, you get a good overview of the town - you can see more skeletons and some body parts partially mummified by sand and sun. You don't notice anything hiding immediately on top of the mesa.

The man furrows his brow and simply states "A threat that finds man a more valuable target than his beasts. We have been under attack from the skies for weeks by a band of Aarakocra warriors and divers. They have picked us off one by one - they leave the bodies to intimidate us. All of our bravest warriors have fallen - how does one without wings defend from the sky?"

Jihae shakes his head wearily. "What of the boy? Did he survive this siege?" The man glances at the ground and shifts his weight awkwardly. "I am unsure. He may be amongst the bones scattered around the village. He may yet live, taken from us by those cursed scavengers. Who can say where to, though? With it being too dangerous to even stick one's head out for too long, it would be a fool's errand to search for him."

Almost before the man is finished, Obsidian turns. "I will retrieve the others," he says, before sprinting back to the halfling and the genasi, keeping his eyes on the skies as he does. Once he is close enough to communicate relatively quietly, he says simply, "Aarakocra." Gesticulating above them (and hoping Haffanu can see where he is pointing), he continues, "Watch the skies, and get inside; our beasts of burden should be fine -- they are not the creatures' targets. Our remaining companion is still in danger, however; I will go to warn him her."

I can move 90' in a round when I Dash, so I can get back to the others pretty quickly. If I have any movement left after warning them, I'll start the round trip back toward the mesa. Unless someone can communicate with Haffanu magically/psionically, I'll go into Stealth mode next in order to retrieve him.

Tara's very suddenly uncomfortable with the situation, armed only with a sword and shield with the prospect of aerial combatants entering the situation eventually. Catching the attention of her erdlu, Tara makes a rough gesture and the beast of burden begins to amble into town with it's precious cargo of food and water.

Her supplies at least close enough that she could sprint to them from inside one of the huts to defend it should the aarakocra descend on the village, Tara reluctantly steps inside the hut of Jihae's confidant, standing near to the door where she can keep her cart in sight.

Whether there really were no enemies on the mesa or they were just unnoticed, Haffanu gets out of there, sliding down the mesa and to the rest of the party to listen.

"Hah, I fear no Aarakocra. They lack cover in the open air. Snipe with a bow in concert with a shield holder. Pike for the divers. What is their numbers?" Confidence works well on the hopeless.

Patiently listening as ever, she finds herself curious and confused as to the man's explanation. An entire village, felled by two aarakocra warriors?

It was plausible, she supposed. She knew all too well how trivial and one-sided a battle could be, if one knew how to fight and their opponent did not. She had seen it many times in her years among the elves. A superior understanding of movement, or tactics, or range ...such things ended battles before they began, and made giants into mewling cubs.

Still, their flight was an advantage, to be sure, but it should not have been an insurmountable one. Had this village no trained warriors of its own? Surely the villagers had the advantage of numbers, which should have more than offset any aerial superiority. Was this yet another case of frightened mobs of humans, too timid to rise above their fear and defeat an easily quelled foe? Forty to one, few battles were possible to lose, unless one was a fool. Perhaps the village got what it deserved ...though that was obviously an insensitive opinion to voice at this juncture.

She continues to listen, curious how her companions may react to this news. Getting to know their motivations and worldviews was of greater value than uncovering information about this incident at a faster pace than the natural course of things dictated.

So, how many waves of how many have attacked since the last pause, and how long are the pauses? If they mark the time the most of their numbers are or tired or resting, that would make it the perfect time to strike. And the worst time for me to be scouting if I wanted to find anything."

Tara nods as Haffanu suggests those ranged fighters in the group teaming up with a heavily armored teammate, drawing a piece of her chalk out from a belt pouch Tara begins to scratch out shaky letters on the front of her shield I'll cover an archer of course when the fight comes.

Hand cramping uncomfortably at the unpracticed task of writing, she continues with a second note to Jihae The Boy: Description? Deep wounds for identifying bones? The last thing the party needed was to be wandering around picking over corpses at random hoping to find the person they needed if they weren't found in direct possession of the birdfolk.

Tara heaves a sigh as the villagers outline what has been happening, she was certainly no good with a bow or sling, but in a village of this size you never could tell who would surprise you. But the people here seemed broken with fear, they would need the spark to fight back in their guts if they were to survive here for any length of time.

As it were destroying the creatures razing the village came first in progressing with the mission, the first step would be to figure out if this child they were here to find was still alive or if the mission was dead and buried in the silt already. A few severed heads of the beasts that had been attacking thrown up on pikes wouldn't hurt to dissuade further attacks and the sight of the villager's enemies dead would light a fire under them. Eager to find the foul creatures Tara's grip on her blade tightens as she moves to the doorway and glances toward the sky once again.

My kank, with a barrel full of water, is being left for the villagers (for now). If there's no food anywhere they can have my rations as well.
As long at least one person watches the skies for me, I'll move among the dwellings to round up the survivors -- I should never be more than one Dash away from cover.
